New Orleans Saints’ Bountygate powers coaching carousel

October 24, 2012 by www.denverpost.com

Bountygate, the NFL’s prosecution of the New Orleans Saints’ 2009-11 pay-for-performance bounty program, contains so many layers and ingredients it’s a challenge to digest. The penalties levied by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell included a year-long suspension for coach Sean Paytonwithout pay and season-long suspension for all-pro linebacker Jonathan Vilma. At the very least, the effects will be felt until Payton returns next spring. Vilma will play Sunday night in Denver while his suspension is being appealed. When interim coach Joe Vitt flew back to New Orleans (2-4) on the team plane Sunday after a come-from-behind victory at Tampa Bay, the Saints began answering to the third man in charge in seven months. Vitt, the Saints’ assistant head coach and linebackers coach, completed a six-game suspension. He paid his way to Tampa, Fla., to watch the game as a spectator, but his suspension ended as soon as Sunday’s game ended, so he was able to hop on the team’s charter. For … [Read more...] about New Orleans Saints’ Bountygate powers coaching carousel

Keeler: If Sean Payton fixes Russell Wilson, trade was worth it for Broncos

January 31, 2023 by www.denverpost.com

Fix Russ. If Sean Payton can manage that, hiring him was worth it . The trade that’s sending pick No. 29 in the 2023 NFL Draft and a second-rounder in 2024 to the Saints. The hand-wringing. The waiting. The speculation. The false hopes. The doubts. The “mystery candidates.” The chapped lips after having to kiss Jim Harbaugh’s ring in person. The inevitable, uncomfortable questions about that Bountygate scandal. Fix Russell Wilson, coach, and it all washes away. Like castles made of sand. Payton, who led the Saints to their only Super Bowl victory and was acquired by the Broncos for two draft picks Tuesday, isn’t a quarterback whisperer. He’s a QB savant. The naysayers will tell you that Payton’s 152 regular-season wins over 15 seasons in the Big Easy was a product of trotting out Drew Brees, a Hall-of-Fame quarterback, to run his stuff. That’s baloney. Payton posted a 17-12 record with the Saints in games that featured someone other than Brees as his starter — a … [Read more...] about Keeler: If Sean Payton fixes Russell Wilson, trade was worth it for Broncos

Study Ranks America’s 15 Unsafest Cities For 2023

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Although data shows that violent crime rates dropped in cities across the U.S. last year, crime is still a growing concern among many Americans—whose fears are only likely to increase with incidents like the recent mass shootings . For the third year in a row, MoneyGeek—a personal finance technology company—has issued a list of the most dangerous cities in the U.S., as well as the safest cities in America . It’s a helpful report to consider, whether you’re traveling in the U.S. or just a concerned citizen. “The report allows us to see what factors may connect safe and dangerous cities to each other. Readers can also learn a bit of what to expect from visiting or living in different cities,” says Doug Milnes, MoneyGeek’s chief of data analytics. “Being aware of the facts—rather than simply the reputations of different cities—is paramount before a big move or vacationing.” MoneyGeek came up with this year’s … [Read more...] about Study Ranks America’s 15 Unsafest Cities For 2023

As The Great Chicken Sandwich Wars Rage, My Quest To Get Popeyes

August 22, 2019 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This has been a week that Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen won't forget. Last week, Popeyes announced it would introduce its first chicken sandwich on Monday. The sandwich was meant to compete directly with Chick-fil-A, which has become the gold standard among chicken sandwiches. Instead, Popeyes created social media hoopla that even its marketing department couldn't have expected. Beginning with a Popeyes-Chick showdown, the Great Chicken Sandwich Wars broke out. There were chicken sandwich taste tests galore, with everybody picking winners and losers. Even the New Yorker weighed in. The whole thing is a big reward for Popeyes' Canadian owners, Restaurant Brands International, which has owned the company since 2017, and vowed to do more with Popeyes, like expanding it across China. But I have a confession to make: the Popeyes sandwich simply slipped my mind. Just as Meg Ryan went to get a manicure … [Read more...] about As The Great Chicken Sandwich Wars Rage, My Quest To Get Popeyes

Kiszla: Gary Kubiak makes a brave move, refusing to love Broncos to death

January 1, 2017 by www.denverpost.com

The NFL is Gary Kubiak ’s life. He refused to let it be the death of him. “You can’t kill yourself over this game,” Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. said Sunday. “You don’t want to die being a coach. You don’t want to die like that.” Saying goodbye to a job and team he loves was painful, as uncomfortable as the arms crossed across Kubiak’s chest, as if his heart might burst, after the Broncos beat Oakland 24-6. In his heart, however, Kubiak knew he had to say goodbye, because as much as he loves the Broncos, he loves his wife and family more. The team was never the same from the moment Kubiak was hauled away from the stadium in an ambulance after a loss to Atlanta in October. He suffered a mini-stroke while coach of the Texans in 2013, and the second health scare was too much to bear. He wore the stress in his face, yet refused to quit until this 9-7 season was done. “In all honesty, I struggled this year,” admitted Kubiak, holding back tears. Broncos Country, … [Read more...] about Kiszla: Gary Kubiak makes a brave move, refusing to love Broncos to death
