New York (CNN Business) The coronavirus pandemic has forced everyone to get creative. Whether through Zoom meetings , online fitness classes or take-out cocktails , companies in nearly every industry are pivoting to get through the crisis. Some work-arounds have been especially creative, such as individual exercise "pods" to get people back into gyms. But beyond short-term fixes, many innovative new strategies and business models have emerged that are likely to stick, even as many jurisdictions begin to reopen in some capacity. In many cases, these transformations are thanks to the increased adoption of technology and the digitization of businesses. Many of these changes were underway pre-coronavirus; the pandemic has just accelerated them. "What's important to customers has changed," John Roese, Dell ( DELL ) Technologies chief technology officer , told CNN Business. What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession
If you're looking for capitulation in 2022, it's in the bond market. And that tells you that investors' confidence in the global economy is very low. Inside the stock market, it's all about defense. Defensive stocks, which include big healthcare companies and dividend-paying value stocks, have been driving the gains. An index of global defensive stocks put together by Goldman Sachs, which is heavy in healthcare giants, has climbed to more than an 18-month high relative to the MSCI AC World Index. Inside the U.S., the defensive ETF ticker DEF has been outperforming the Spider ETF SPY all last week and all year. For market watchers, this feels a whole lot like a recession trade. While investors in the capital markets are battening the hatches for a recession, money in the private markets is also drying up. The value of venture capital deals in the U.S. dropped more than 25% in the second quarter to just $1 trillion, according to Dealogic . M&A activity in the United States … [Read more...] about What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession
Apple Just Updated a Product No One Even Knew It Still Sold
It's official. It's finally here. The brand new, updated, turbo-charged, better than ever... iPod Touch? Wait, the iPod might be one of the most significant innovations Apple has ever created, but did anyone know it still actually sold them? I'm pretty sure I still have a 5th generation iPod Video in a drawer somewhere. I even swapped out the original hard drive for a compact flash card a few years ago, but I haven't used it since I bought an iPhone . It turns out not only does Apple sell them, but the company just announced it has updated them with the A10 Fusion processor from the iPhone 7, with support for augmented reality (AR) and Group FaceTime. Apple's announcement includes an especially interesting quote from Greg Joswiak, who is Apple's vice president of product marketing. In it, Joswiak says that Apple's "making the most affordable iOS device even better with performance that is twice as fast as before." Here's why that's interesting. He … [Read more...] about Apple Just Updated a Product No One Even Knew It Still Sold
5 Reasons Why Steve Jobs’s iPhone Keynote Is Still the Best Presentation of All Time
Today the iPhone celebrates its 10th anniversary as one of the best-selling products of all time. As a communication specialist, I mark the event for a slightly different reason. The launch of the iPhone was accompanied by one of the best business presentations in corporate history. Here are five techniques that Steve Jobs used to make the iPhone launch magical and memorable, tips that you can use in your very next pitch or presentation. 1. The Setup A good story--and nearly every successful Hollywood movie--follows the three-act structure: setup, conflict, and resolution. The setup is key. It introduces the characters and provides the background to move the action forward. In the 2007 iPhone presentation, Jobs built up the narrative before he even mentioned a new product. "This is a day I've been looking forward to for two and a half years," Jobs began. "Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything ... Surprise: The Hiring Manager Is More Anxious Than The Job Seeker
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Here is a hack that will make you feel more confident in your job search: the interviewer and hiring managers are more nervous than you are. It’s hard to wrap your mind around this concept, as people are indoctrinated to think that job seekers should be the ones who are nervous and anxious going into an interview. They worry about being judged. Job hunters must contend with the shame of not moving onto the next level in the interview process. Even worse, they don’t receive feedback and get ghosted. The hiring process feels—to the job seeker—like the company, human resources, management and internal talent acquisition professionals hold all of the power. What Hiring Managers Obsessively Worry About A supervisor needs to hire. They want to make sure that the applicant possesses all of the requirements listed in the job description. The interviewer also wants to feel that they can click with the candidate and forge a … [Read more...] about Surprise: The Hiring Manager Is More Anxious Than The Job Seeker
