Supreme Court Strikes Down N.Y. Concealed Carry Law—Could Lead To Rollbacks Nationwide
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Supreme Court struck down a New York law Thursday that only lets firearm owners receive a concealed carry license if they have “proper cause,” a blow to gun control advocates that marks the court’s most significant Second Amendment ruling in over a decade and could roll back gun control measures across the country. Key Facts The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that New York’s concealed carry law violates the Fourteenth Amendment, by stopping “law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs” from practicing their Second Amendment right to bear arms. The challenge , brought by gun owners in the state, argued New York’s law that only gave licenses to firearm owners who have “proper cause” was unlawful under the Second Amendment, because licenses are too often denied and the decisions are left up to the personal discretion of individual licensing … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Strikes Down N.Y. Gun Law Changes Will Impact Legal Advisors
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Legal advisors will need to come up to speed on the new gun law changes. I hope that this helps. On Tuesday, June 21, the Senate advanced a gun safety bill, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, with a vote of 64-34. Just days later, the Supreme Court announced its decision in New York Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, where the court struck down New York’s law requiring applicants for a concealed handgun license show “proper cause” before receiving their permit. Here’s what the proposed bill seeks to accomplish : 1. Close the boyfriend loophole. Currently, federal law prevents those who have been convicted of domestic abuse against a partner they are married to, living with or share children with from purchasing a gun —but does not apply to those convicted of abuse against a person they are merely dating or have no romantic relationship with. The updated text would define “misdemeanor crime of domestic … [Read more...] about Gun Law Changes Will Impact Legal Advisors
These 17 States Haven’t Adopted The New Federal 529 Plan Rules Yet
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2018, President Trump expanded the ability for people to use 529 plan money to pay for private elementary and secondary school. This addition to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act allows up to $10,000 per year to be withdrawn tax free if used for qualifying tuition expenses. However, just because it's tax free at the Federal level doesn't mean that it's tax free at the state level. And as of November 1, 2018, 17 states haven't updated their tax code to conform with the new law. That means you could be in for a surprise tax bill at the state level. Here's what you need to know about using a 529 plan for private elementary or high school . ‘Bust One In Me’: New York School District Defends Raunchy Sex Ed Class
A New York school district defended a sex education lesson that discussed terms such as “professional raw dogger,” “bust one in me,” and “coochie slayer,” according to a photo of the classroom lesson. The terms posted to a whiteboard contributed to a lesson plan for a 10th-grade health class, according to the Washington Free Beacon . The lesson was reportedly designed to teach students about “the importance of using respectful language” when discussing sex. Phrases posted to the board included “ejaculate and evacuate,” “rearrange my insides,” “cum n’ go,” “screwed,” “railed,” “boned” and “face fuck,” according to the outlet. One obscure term in the photo, “charzarding,” can only be defined by the Urban Dictionary . Look what’s being taught in 10th grade at a Westchester HS & in schools around NY, according to many concerned parents who contacted me. Law Firm Representing Hillary’s IT Guy Has Donated Heavily To Her Campaign
Bryan Pagliano, the State Department IT guru who has said he will plead the fifth rather than testify about his work on Hillary Clinton’s home-brew email server, is represented by a partner at a prestigious Washington D.C. law firm with close political and financial ties to the former secretary of state. The arrangement between Pagliano and Mark MacDougall of Akin Gump raises questions over whether the former Clinton aide merely sought to hire the best lawyer he could find for himself, or whether the Democratic presidential hopeful intervened in any way. (RELATED: Hillary Paid Her State Department IT Guy On The Side To Manage Private Server) As Clinton has come under more and more scrutiny for her use of a personal email account and an off-the-books email server, she offered a pseudo-apology on Friday. “At the end of the day, I am sorry that this has been confusing to people and has raised a lot of questions,” Clinton told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. New York’s La Brasserie Is True To Tradition And Cordiality
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The re-opening last year of the space that had been Les Halles Boucherie Rotisserie as of 1991 in the architecturally historic Foltis-Fischer building is a welcome addition to the Park Avenue South neighborhood in need of good restaurants. In the 1990s this is where the late Anthony Bourdain was once chef, though, despite his eventual celeb status, the food and service never rose above the mediocre (given his own description in his book Kitchen Confidential of a drug-fueled staff, such was to be expected). The space was bought by Alsace-born Francis Staub, who began the immensely successful cookware line emblazoned with the image of a stork, and those who remember the old premises will be happy that Staub retained much of the configuration, with the millwork of the original entrance doors, zinc bar, terrazzo floor, egg-and-dart details on the coffered ceilings and burnished brass trim throughout. Now the place looks … [Read more...] about New York’s La Brasserie Is True To Tradition And Cordiality
Justice Clarence Thomas Says There’s One Thing A New SCOTUS Nominee Should Never Do
Editor’s note: What follows is an excerpt from Michael Pack and Mark Paoletta’s book “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words.” It can be purchased here . Michael Pack: The big driver for the Democrats opposing you was Roe v. Wade. They asked lots about that, and in many ways. Clarence Thomas: I think it was central to a lot. It was certainly the key to the opposition from many of the women’s groups. I just thought it was ironic that in my whole life, through all the years of preparation, and coming through Georgia, and all the challenges, that of all the things that they’ve reduced it to was something that wasn’t even an issue in your life. Wasn’t a matter you’ve thought about, but because that issue is so important to them, they will wash over your entire life. They will vandalize the little life that you’ve cobbled together because their stuff is so important. What I realized, and should have realized more fully, is that you really didn’t matter and your life didn’t … [Read more...] about Justice Clarence Thomas Says There’s One Thing A New SCOTUS Nominee Should Never Do
