Five young Connecticut residents were killed when their vehicle veered off a New York parkway and hit a tree Sunday, leaving a 9-year-old boy as the sole survivor, police say. The 2021 Nissan Rouge SUV was traveling on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale when it veered off the road, according to the Westchester County Police Department (WCPD). The evidence indicates the 16-year-old alleged driver was distracted or fell asleep, police said. A 9-year-old managed to escape through the trunk of the car and was brought to Westchester Medical Center for medical attention, WCPD wrote in a press release. “The driver did not turn with the roadway, it continued in a straight line. We believe it hit a boulder and then hit a tree head-on, and the car was engulfed in flames at that point, and the five passengers who perished were unable to exit safely from the passenger component front and back seat of the car,” Westchester County Executive George Latimer said during a media … [Read more...] about Police Investigate After Fiery Car Crash In New York Leaves 5 Minors Dead, 1 Injured

Gender Equality Is Achievable In Our Lifetime: New Book Reveals How Laws Directly Impact Equality And The Global Economy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In recent years, we have heard various alarming estimates about how long it will take to achieve gender equality. According to UN Women’s most recent report, at the current rate of progress, it will take 286 years for the world to achieve gender equality . Per the World Economic Forum it will take another 132 years to close the global gender gap . Regardless of which projection is most accurate, the bottom line is that the current rate of “progress” is unacceptably slow for something so long overdue. It was discouraging statistics like these, and the desire to provide actionable ways to accelerate the rate of progress, that served as a catalyst for the newly released analysis and book, Equality Within Our Lifetimes: How Laws and Policies Can Close—or Widen—Gender Gaps in Economies Worldwide , a powerful call to action written by Jody Heymann, Aleta Sprague and Amy Raub of WORLD Policy Analysis Center (WORLD). Florida Atlantic Advances To The Elite Eight, Continues Unlikely NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Run
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As Nick Boyd entered Florida Atlantic’s locker room at Madison Square Garden late Thursday night, he screamed “This is my city!” over and over. Boyd, a redshirt freshman guard, isn’t technically from New York City. He grew up in Garnerville, N.Y., about 60 miles north of Manhattan, and played in high school at Don Bosco Institute in New Jersey. Still, it was hard to argue with Boyd’s enthusiasm after No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic defeated No. 4 seed Tennessee, 62-55, in the NCAA tournament’s East Region semifinal. The Owls advanced to face No. 3 seed Kansas State on Saturday in the Elite Eight, continuing their unlikely run. Before this season, Florida Atlantic had only appeared in one NCAA tournament, losing in the opening round in 2002. They also had won at least 20 games in a season just once, going 21-11 in 2011. But they are now 34-3, have more victories than any team in the nation and have memories of their fans … [Read more...] about Florida Atlantic Advances To The Elite Eight, Continues Unlikely NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Run
The American Dream mall sets its sights beyond traditional retail
Here’s a riddle for connoisseurs of the good life. You hit the slopes in the morning, take in a wine tasting over lunch, then spend the afternoon browsing Balenciaga shoes and Hermès scarves. Where are you? Aspen? St. Moritz? Gstaad? How about East Rutherford, New Jersey? We speak of the American Dream mall , Canadian conglomerate Triple Five Group’s endeavor to take retail to new heights of amenitization. Sprawling across roughly three million square feet seven miles from Manhattan, the development hosts a raft of high-end outlets, including shops from luxury brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, and Yves Saint Laurent. Perhaps more unique, it features entertainment options—a water park, a wave pool, an indoor ski slope, a Nickelodeon theme park—more typical of vacation destinations like Las Vegas or Orlando than a mall in the north Jersey suburbs. But while American Dream is an extreme example, it’s also emblematic of a larger trend within the mall space … [Read more...] about The American Dream mall sets its sights beyond traditional retail
One More Lap Around the Pylons -The Last Reno Air Races Are This Fall
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At the end of the annual Reno National Championship Air Races this September, a 60-year tradition of closed-course pylon air racing will end in northern Nevada and with it an invaluable piece of American tradition. The hope is that air racing may carry on elsewhere but it’s a tough ask. A fortnight ago, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) announced that 2023 will be the final year that the Reno-Stead Airport (north of the City of Reno) will host the National Championship Air Races from September 13-17. The end of the six-decade event came with a decision by the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority ( RTAA ) - which runs Reno-Stead Airport where the Races have been held since 1964 - not to renew a contract with RARA to hold the event based on concerns including “rapid area development, public safety and the impact on the Reno-Stead Airport and its surrounding areas.” “They gave a variety of reasons,” RARA COO, Tony … [Read more...] about One More Lap Around the Pylons -The Last Reno Air Races Are This Fall
‘This is a preventable crisis’: Pete Buttigieg on spending $800 million to eliminate traffic deaths
Maggie Paxton was 18 years old and days from finishing her second semester of college in late 2020 when she was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing University Avenue, a four-lane street bordering the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. A month later, a few blocks down the same street, two cars crashed and one spun into a group of students standing on the sidewalk; another student was killed and four others were injured. These weren’t isolated incidents—over the last decade, dozens of crashes on the road have injured pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Several pedestrians have been killed, including, most recently, an 81-year-old man who died while crossing the same street one night last November. Some local critics call it death by design: The wide road was expanded in the 1970s to help cars move as quickly as possible, leading to more and more collisions. But the city has started making changes, including adding crosswalks with flashing lights and … [Read more...] about ‘This is a preventable crisis’: Pete Buttigieg on spending $800 million to eliminate traffic deaths
An Arrest—Or Conviction—Would Not Prevent Trump From Running For Office
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Charging former President Donald Trump with a crime—or even convicting him—wouldn’t stop him from running for president, most experts agree, as Trump faces an expected indictment for allegedly falsifying business records and violating campaign finance laws in 2016. Key Facts The Constitution only requires a presidential candidate to be a natural-born U.S. citizen, at least 35 years old and have lived in the country for 14 years—with no other restrictions. A president who is impeached can be prevented from running for future office—but only if supported by both chambers—and Trump, while impeached by the U.S. House twice, the Senate in both cases refused to vote to convict him. Trump is being investigated by the Department of Justice for allegedly mishandling classified documents after he left the White House. Title 18, Section 2071 of the U.S. Code criminalizes “willfully” concealing, … [Read more...] about An Arrest—Or Conviction—Would Not Prevent Trump From Running For Office
Antisemitic Attacks Hit All-Time High In 2022, ADL Report Says
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Reports of antisemitic incidents in the United States hit record levels in 2022, the Anti-Defamation League said in a report published Thursday, continuing a five-year upswing in antisemitism amid mounting fears the behavior of influential public figures like Donald Trump and Kanye West are normalizing hate. Key Facts The ADL recorded 3,697 antisemitic incidents across the U.S. in 2022, the highest annual total since the organization started tracking incidents in 1979. The figure marks a 36% increase from the year before—itself a record-setting year—and follows a broad uptick in hate towards the American Jewish community over the past five years, three of which recorded record levels of antisemitic incidents. The report said no single factor was responsible for the surge in hate and five states— New York (580), California (518), New Jersey (408), Florida (269) and Texas (211)—collectively accounted … [Read more...] about Antisemitic Attacks Hit All-Time High In 2022, ADL Report Says
Army Failure To Embrace Chinook Helicopter Upgrades Endangers Industrial Base
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On March 28-30, the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) will host a “Global Force Symposium & Exposition” in Huntsville, Alabama. Working closely with relevant Army commands, AUSA has fashioned the symposium as a premier venue for illuminating how the service intends to transform itself. A key feature of the symposium agenda is modernization of the industrial base, both public and private, that manufactures and sustains the tools of land warfare. The Army frequently states that it is seeking a collaborative relationship with the private sector in pursuit of a robust and reliable industrial base. However, some of the choices the Army makes don’t seem calibrated to accomplish that goal. A case in point is the Army’s continuing resistance to modernizing its CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, an aircraft expected to remain in the active force through 2060. Chinook is one of the fastest rotorcraft in the … [Read more...] about Army Failure To Embrace Chinook Helicopter Upgrades Endangers Industrial Base
