Gender Equality Is Achievable In Our Lifetime: New Book Reveals How Laws Directly Impact Equality And The Global Economy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In recent years, we have heard various alarming estimates about how long it will take to achieve gender equality. According to UN Women’s most recent report, at the current rate of progress, it will take 286 years for the world to achieve gender equality . Per the World Economic Forum it will take another 132 years to close the global gender gap . Regardless of which projection is most accurate, the bottom line is that the current rate of “progress” is unacceptably slow for something so long overdue. It was discouraging statistics like these, and the desire to provide actionable ways to accelerate the rate of progress, that served as a catalyst for the newly released analysis and book, Equality Within Our Lifetimes: How Laws and Policies Can Close—or Widen—Gender Gaps in Economies Worldwide , a powerful call to action written by Jody Heymann, Aleta Sprague and Amy Raub of WORLD Policy Analysis Center (WORLD). Police Investigate After Fiery Car Crash In New York Leaves 5 Minors Dead, 1 Injured
Five young Connecticut residents were killed when their vehicle veered off a New York parkway and hit a tree Sunday, leaving a 9-year-old boy as the sole survivor, police say. The 2021 Nissan Rouge SUV was traveling on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale when it veered off the road, according to the Westchester County Police Department (WCPD). The evidence indicates the 16-year-old alleged driver was distracted or fell asleep, police said. A 9-year-old managed to escape through the trunk of the car and was brought to Westchester Medical Center for medical attention, WCPD wrote in a press release. “The driver did not turn with the roadway, it continued in a straight line. We believe it hit a boulder and then hit a tree head-on, and the car was engulfed in flames at that point, and the five passengers who perished were unable to exit safely from the passenger component front and back seat of the car,” Westchester County Executive George Latimer said during a media … [Read more...] about Police Investigate After Fiery Car Crash In New York Leaves 5 Minors Dead, 1 Injured

Why fast-food workers, ride-hail drivers, and nail technicians are fighting for this new form of labor organizing
Lenny Peña, from Lawrence, Massachusetts, has been driving for Uber since 2017. At the beginning, he says he was able to make nearly $3,000 every week, by working seven or eight hours a day. But the payment structure for drivers has changed . “Now, to make the same amount of money, it’s extremely difficult,” he says, speaking through a translator. He has to drive 12 hours for Uber, and sometimes another four hours with Lyft, seven days a week. A ride that used to get him $60, he says, now pays him only about $25. He’s tried to raise the issue with the company, but without much impact. “You can talk to Uber, and we do talk to Uber, but you really don’t have a voice or a vote with this company,” he says. “They pay what they want to pay, and that’s it.” So now, Peña is banding together with other rideshare drivers to push for a Massachusetts bill that would ensure a guaranteed minimum wage, paid sick time, and the right to organize a union, among other … [Read more...] about Why fast-food workers, ride-hail drivers, and nail technicians are fighting for this new form of labor organizing
New Bill In Congress Would Ban “Nonjudicial” Civil Forfeiture
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin To protect innocent Americans from “lawless” police seizures, Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Tim Walberg (R-MI) reintroduced a bill on March 9 that would significantly overhaul the federal government’s civil forfeiture laws. Civil forfeiture lets the government seize and keep valuable property without ever convicting the owner of a crime or even filing criminal charges. And under federal law, innocent owners who want to reclaim their seized property must prove they weren’t involved in any wrongdoing, flipping the presumption of innocence straight on its head. In a bitterly divided political landscape, the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration Act (H.R. 1525) is a refreshing display of bipartisanship, receiving an equal number of Democratic and Republican co-sponsors. “Seizing property and handing it over to the government without proof of wrongdoing is fundamentally un-American,” said Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), one of … [Read more...] about New Bill In Congress Would Ban “Nonjudicial” Civil Forfeiture
Why the SPLC’s new logo ditched its famous icon
The Southern Poverty Law Center bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups through the power of the legal system—and so it might have come as a surprise when the organization recently unveiled its new logo, it was conspicuously lacking the scales of justice icon that had defined the organization for years. It was a change that no one on the project team took lightly—but the organization was committed to bold moves, and for good reason. “Historically, it’s been a law firm, it’s been a legal service for voting rights and civil rights and advocacy groups, but over time, it’s expanded into something that’s much more than that,” says Chris Mihal, SPLC’s director of creative. In 2022, the organization completed a new strategic framework focused on its four key offerings: law, education, policy, and programming, centered around the critical subjects of hate and extremism, children’s rights, economic justice, immigrant justice, LGBTQ rights, criminal justice reform, … [Read more...] about Why the SPLC’s new logo ditched its famous icon

Waymo Makes A New Safety Case And Challenges All To Also Do So – But Is It Right?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Today, Waymo released an extension of their previous safety frameworks where they promote what they call a “Case Credibility Assessment” — a way of examining whether any safety case is strong and should be believed. Developers of robocars prepare a “Safety case,” which is to say a case (argument) that the vehicle presents an “absence of unreasonable risk” to riders and the public. That case consists of a combination of both credible arguments and credible evidence that a system will be as safe as is claimed as as it needs to be. Waymo hopes that its safety cases will be credible and that this methodology for that will be used not just by themselves, but by others deploying self-driving cars. You can read about their approach in their blog post , which has a link to a much longer and more academic paper about the methodology . To be frank, this is fairly dense stuff, for safety nerds. 99.999% of the people who ride in … [Read more...] about Waymo Makes A New Safety Case And Challenges All To Also Do So – But Is It Right?
