Juul Funded High Schools, Recruited Social Media Influencers To Reach Youth, House Panel Charges

July 25, 2019 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A House panel revealed for the first time internal documents from Juul Labs that Democrats said detailed the e-cigarette company’s plan to directly reach teenagers. The hearing, which featured Juul cofounder James Monsees and chief administration officer Ashley Gould, comes as part of a House Oversight Committee investigation into the company’s role in what the Food and Drug Administration has dubbed a youth vaping epidemic. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the amount of high schoolers who used e-cigarettes jumped to 20.8% in 2018 from 11.7% the previous year. The panel requested last month that Juul turn over a wide-ranging set of internal communications related to its marketing and social media strategies. Panel members used some of those documents to question executives about the San Francisco company’s efforts to recruit social media influencers and to talk to teenagers face-to-face. … [Read more...] about Juul Funded High Schools, Recruited Social Media Influencers To Reach Youth, House Panel Charges

June 25, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Have you ever looked at another person’s daily accomplishments and thought, “How do they do it”? Old Solar Panels Causing An Environmental Crisis In China

August 1, 2017 by dailycaller.com

Thousands of ageing solar panels sited throughout China could trigger an environmental crisis over the next two decades, according to industry experts. China has more solar power plants than any other country, operating roughly twice as many solar panels as the U.S. with no plans on how to dispose of the old panels that break down. “It will explode with full force in two or three decades and wreck the environment, if the estimate is correct,” Tian Min, general manager of a Chinese recycling company, told The South China Morning Post . “This is a huge amount of waste and they are not easy to recycle.” There could be 20 million metric tons of solar panel waste, or 2,000 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower, by 2050 according to Lu Fang, the secretary general of solar power at the China Renewable Energy Society. Solar panels use hazardous materials, like sulfuric acid and phosphine gas, in the manufacturing process that makes them hard to recycle. Ukraine’s Quadcopters Avoid Russian Jamming — And Target Russian Drone Operators

June 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sergey Hadzhinov is a frontline drone operator with Aerorozvidka – “Aerial Intelligence” – a civilian organization set up in 2014 to aid Ukraine’s military with reconnaissance using consumer drones and now integrated with the armed forces. In a new interview in the Ukrainian news portal Censort.NET, he explains how they evade Russian electronic warfare which threatened to ground the drone fleet, and target Russian drone operators. Consumer drones, in particular those made by Chinese company DJI, have proven invaluable in this conflict for intelligence gathering, directing artillery and helping footsoldiers stalk and destroy Russian armor, not to mention dropping grenades on unsuspecting Russian troops. However, DJI sells a device called AeroScope which automatically locates the communications links used by DJI drones in a given area – not just the drones themselves, but also the operators’ control units, so … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s Quadcopters Avoid Russian Jamming — And Target Russian Drone Operators

The ‘Red Tax’: The Air Force’s Workaround for Fewer Aggressor Aircraft and Pilots at Nellis AFB

June 22, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Colonel Scott “Manual” Mills has been tasked with managing the reactivation of the Air Force’s 65th Aggressor Squadron (AGRS), the first “red air” squadron completely equipped with F-35s. It’s a difficult job at any time but even more difficult now that the USAF has ended private “red air” aggressor support at Nellis Air Force Base. Nellis is home to the Air Force Weapons School , the USAF’s counterpart to the Navy’s Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center, popularly known as TOPGUN. The base also hosts the world-renowned joint-service, international Red Flag and other air combat exercises. It’s the home of the Air Force’s F-16-flying 64th AGRS and other air combat training units, what the folks at Nellis call “Aggressor Nation.” Until the end of last month, Aggressor Nation was larger. The USAF squadrons which support the Weapons School and exercises as red air were augmented by aircraft and pilots from private … [Read more...] about The ‘Red Tax’: The Air Force’s Workaround for Fewer Aggressor Aircraft and Pilots at Nellis AFB

Russia’s Deadly Artillery Drones Have A Strange Secret (Updated)

April 11, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Russia’s small drones continue to take a deadly toll of Ukrainian forces, directing laser-guided artillery rounds with lethal precision. But the drones are not as advanced as you might expect, with new video of a captured airframe showing it is fitted with an off-the-shelf Canon DSLR camera. Russia’s manned air force has not been effective, and even its most modern aircraft keep getting shot down . Confirmed casualties to date include at least 19 combat aircraft and 32 helicopters, but the real total will be higher (though likely less than the 152 aircraft and 137 helicopters claimed by Ukraine). But their unmanned fleet seems to have been more effective. Numerous drone videos released by the Russian Ministry of Defence show similar scenes : a Ukrainian armored vehicle, often self-propelled artillery, is observed for a few seconds before suddenly exploding, destroyed by an unseen projectile. Sometimes videos … [Read more...] about Russia’s Deadly Artillery Drones Have A Strange Secret (Updated)

Avalanche prepares for second chance to hoist the Stanley Cup — this time in Tampa

June 26, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

TAMPA, Fla. — It was another maintenance morning for a handful of Avalanche forwards on Sunday at Amalie Arena. Gabe Landeskog, Nazem Kadri, Valeri Nichushkin and Andre Burakovsky each skipped the skate ahead of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Colorado coach Jared Bednar said he’s hopeful all four banged-up forwards will be available to play as the club prepares for its second consecutive chance to win the Stanley Cup. Landeskog has had an ailment that has prevented him from participating in morning skates throughout the postseason. Kadri is hoping to play in his third straight game after returning from a broken thumb. Nichushkin sustained a lower-body injury in Friday’s Game 5. And Burakovsky has missed the last three games with a hand/wrist injury. The Avs, who failed to close out the series in a 3-2 loss on Friday at Ball Arena, are 8-1 on the road this postseason and have won their three previous series outside Denver. “Our team is … [Read more...] about Avalanche prepares for second chance to hoist the Stanley Cup — this time in Tampa
