S&P revised Malaysia’s rating outlook to stable from negative on strong growth momentum, external position

June 27, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 27): S&P Global Ratings has revised upward its rating outlook on Malaysia’s long term sovereign credit ratings to stable from negative, reflecting its expectation that the country’s steady growth momentum and strong external position will remain in place for the next two years. At the same time, it anticipates that the policymaking environment will be supportive of restoring fiscal settings to a firmer footing. “We revised the outlook to stable in recognition of Malaysia's consistently strong growth trend that is faster than sovereigns of similar income level. Though Malaysia's budget deficits remain high, we expect its growth dynamics to offset vulnerabilities associated with its weak fiscal settings. In addition, political commitment to resume fiscal consolidation post-pandemic is strong, in our view," S&P said in a statement on Monday (June 27). At the same time, it affirmed its 'A-' long-term and 'A-2' short-term foreign … [Read more...] about S&P revised Malaysia’s rating outlook to stable from negative on strong growth momentum, external position

Leaving no one behind in digitization

June 27, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Kim Jong-jin The author is assistant director-general and regional representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It wasn’t so long ago that internet connectivity faded the moment one left a populated area like a city or big town. “No service” was the take-away message back then. But thanks to 3G, 4G and now 5G mobile technology — and coupled with the widespread installation of cellular towers in rural areas across the country — the frustrating message shows up much less frequently. Most importantly, the rapid spread of internet connectivity and mobile telephony has resulted in countless opportunities to help address chronic problems such as poverty, malnutrition and inequality after the service reached into the most remote rural communities. From farmers to fishers to herders, digital technologies are increasingly relied upon to help transform and enhance livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people each day. June 27, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 27): MyNews Holdings Bhd posted its ninth consecutive quarter in the red, with a net loss of RM10.22 million in the second quarter ended April 30, 2022 (2QFY22), from RM10.32 million a year ago. The results came amid higher revenue, offset by higher cost of sales and expenses amid an increase in the number of outlets which also contributed to higher footfall. Quarterly revenue rose 35.74% to RM141.10 million, from RM103.94 million, the group said. Losses per share stood at 1.51 sen, from 1.5 sen. On a quarterly basis, the group’s net loss widened in 2QFY22, from a net loss of RM7.86 million in 1QFY22, while revenue improved by 1.2% from RM139.44 million. The weaker quarter-on-quarter performance was due to additional costs incurred in establishing and promoting the launch of 26 new CU stores in the quarter, it said. For the six-month period ended April 30 (1HFY22), the group’s net loss narrowed to RM18.08 million from a net loss of … [Read more...] about MyNews maintains expansion mode as it continues to bleed in 2QFY22

States’ borrowing cost set to rise on higher debt supply, RBI’s rate cues, experts say

June 27, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Borrowing costs of Indian states are likely to rise in the coming weeks as the Reserve Bank of India ’s (RBI) rate hike cycle becomes more entrenched and the supply of state papers rises, money market experts and bankers told Moneycontrol on June 27. A majority of those expect the yield on the 10-year state development loan (SDL) to rise above 8 percent in the coming weeks. “In the first quarter of this fiscal year, supply of debt was limited. But in the second half of this fiscal year, we expect state debt supply to rise and that should put upward pressure on (state) bond yields,” said Ritesh Bhusari, deputy general manager, treasury, at South Indian Bank. To put in perspective, the cut-off yield for 10-year SDL ranged from 7.83 percent to 7.86 percent at an auction on June 21, according to data from the RBI. Prior to that, at an auction on June 14, Tamil Nadu’s 10-year paper was sold at a cut-off yield of 7.94 percent, while Haryana’s 10-year bond was sold at 7.95 percent. … [Read more...] about States’ borrowing cost set to rise on higher debt supply, RBI’s rate cues, experts say

Spritzer admits costlier crude oil, stronger US dollar will erode its profit margin

June 27, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 27): Costlier crude oil along with a stronger US dollar will erode Spritzer's Bhd profit margin, the bottled water producer admitted. "Costlier oil will translate into costlier PET resin, which is the main raw material used in making the [plastic] bottles. "PET resin is normally quoted in US dollar so a stronger US dollar would mean we will have to pay more for our PET resin," a company representative said in a brief email reply to theedgemarkets.com recently, when asked about the impact of surging oil prices on its manufacturing costs. According to the US-based PET Resin Association, PET — which is short for polyethylene terephthalate, the chemical name for polyester — is a clear, strong, and lightweight plastic made from crude oil and ethane extracted from natural gas that is widely used for packaging food and beverages, especially convenience-sized soft drinks, juices and water. Following Russia's incursion into Ukraine, oil prices … [Read more...] about Spritzer admits costlier crude oil, stronger US dollar will erode its profit margin
