Staring at a lengthy dinner menu while eating out last night, I couldn’t bring myself to contemplate its many choices, however delightful. “I’ll just take whatever is most popular,” I said when the waiter arrived. For a foodie like me, what? Decision fatigue is what. advertisement advertisement Every day, we face thousands of decisions, both big and small—from what to wear, to what to eat, to what to say and how to say it, to whether to change jobs or careers. In total, this amounts to approximately 35,000 remotely conscious decisions a day. And while this number sounds absurd, researchers at Cornell showed that we make 226 decisions each day on food alone. When we face so many choices and make decision after decision, it depletes our mental energy and willpower . This biological price tag is called decision fatigue —or a state of cognitive overload and strain that can hamper your ability to make additional decisions. In this state, our … [Read more...] about How to make decision fatigue more bearable

More than a dozen companies developing single standard to detect cyberattacks faster
Washington (CNN Business) More than a dozen companies in the cybersecurity space are developing a single, open standard for sharing data about hacking threats, a project the companies say could help organizations detect cyberattacks more quickly. The initiative led by Amazon ( AMZN ) , Cloudflare, Crowdstrike, IBM ( IBM ) , Okta and Salesforce ( CRM ) , among others, aims to solve a critical bottleneck in the sharing of threat information: The different data formats currently in use across multiple cybersecurity tools and products. According to the companies, that mismatch can cause delays in understanding how a cyberattack may be unfolding because data from one tool often must be converted into a compatible format to work with another tool. That can hinder analysis of the underlying threat data, said Mark Ryland, a top cybersecurity executive at Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud computing arm. "Having a holistic view of … [Read more...] about More than a dozen companies developing single standard to detect cyberattacks faster
This activist is organizing disaster recovery workers into a powerful labor force
This story is part of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business 2022 . Explore the full list of innovators who broke through this year—and had an impact on the world around us. advertisement In a world hammered by climate change, natural disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and fires are becoming a grim way of life, especially for the labor force that treks from one region to another to perform disaster recovery work. Too often, that means toiling in dangerous conditions with virtually no labor protections, and—especially for those who are undocumented—being vulnerable to wage theft and other abuses. “These [are] the equivalents of the farmworkers of yesteryear, who would travel from crop to crop, season after season” without any recourse against bad employers, says Saket Soni, cofounder and executive director of the nonprofit Resilience Force . Soni started his organization five years ago, to advocate for those workers and reframe their labor as … [Read more...] about This activist is organizing disaster recovery workers into a powerful labor force
Inflation Spiked 8.5% In July—Slowing For The First Time In Months As Gas Prices Fall From Recent Highs
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline As rapid inflation continues to fuel recession fears, new data showed consumer prices rose 8.5% in the 12 months ending in July—slowing down for the first time in months in a potential sign that the Federal Reserve's efforts to cool the economy may finally be working. Key Facts Economists were expecting prices to rise 8.7% on an annual basis after they spiked 9.1% in June. Overall prices were unchanged from June—better than economist expectations calling for a 0.2% increase and much lower than the previous month’s increase of 1.3%, according to data released by the Labor Department on Wednesday. The better-than-feared data was the result of a steep 7.7% decline in gasoline prices, which helped offset increases in food and shelter prices, the government said. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% against an expectation of 0.5%; prices for airline fares, used … [Read more...] about Inflation Spiked 8.5% In July—Slowing For The First Time In Months As Gas Prices Fall From Recent Highs
Japan PM shuffles Cabinet as anger deepens over ties to Unification Church
Kishida, in office since last October, announced his new government team in a shake-up that came earlier than analysts had expected. - A + A TOKYO (Aug 10): Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reshuffled his Cabinet on Wednesday amid growing public anger about the ruling party's ties to the controversial Unification Church, saying the group had held no sway over party policy. The Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) long-standing links to the Unification Church, which critics call a cult, has become a major liability for Kishida in the month following the killing of former premier Shinzo Abe, helping send Kishida's approval ratings to the lowest since he took office in October. Abe's suspected killer has said his mother, a member of the church, was bankrupted by it and blamed the politician for supporting it. Founded in South Korea in the 1950s and known for its mass weddings, the group has come under criticism for its fundraising and other issues. Since then, a … [Read more...] about Japan PM shuffles Cabinet as anger deepens over ties to Unification Church
Consumers Are Starting to Shop Like It’s 2019. What That Means for Your Inventory Strategy
Shoppers aren't looking for sweatpants anymore. Large retailers, including Macy's, Gap, and Walmart, are dealing with excessive inventory of pandemic-era hot-ticket items like casual clothing and home goods, The Wall Street Journal reported. Ongoing supply chain strategies led some retailers to place inventory orders historically early--which, as consumer demand changed over time, left them with an excess of goods that shoppers simply weren't interested in. Others faced a different supply challenge: Seasonal-specific orders arrived late, making them irrelevant to shoppers. Retailers are dealing with their excess supply in different ways: Some are price-slashing items, some are selling goods to discount stores like T.J. Maxx, and others are packing inventory for sale at a later, more relevant date. There's a lesson for businesses to take away from this supply-demand shift: Consumers may be trying to put the pandemic behind them. A return to in-person work and an … [Read more...] about Consumers Are Starting to Shop Like It’s 2019. What That Means for Your Inventory Strategy

The perfect s’more is practically burned and a little salty
By Tanya Sichynsky , The New York Times The campfire s’more is a gooey mess: saccharine, certainly, but also sentimental, stuffed with childhood memories. “When you get older, you still love them,” said Kena Peay, a cook who shares her hiking and camping recipes on social media. “But then you’re like, ‘Uh, this kinda could be improved.’ ” Beloved for its simplicity, a s’more is best known as a roasted marshmallow and a piece of bar chocolate sandwiched between graham crackers. But, really, the perfect campfire s’more is one you enjoy. For some, that can be a roasted Peep with a Reese’s cup tucked into two gingersnap cookies. The potential for customization is endless. The s’more’s origins are as hard to pin down as its oozing center. The first published recipe is often attributed to the 1927 guidebook “Tramping and Trailing With the Girl Scouts,” where it appears under the name “Some More.” But a similar recipe for “Campfire Marshmallow Graham Cracker Sandwich” from the … [Read more...] about The perfect s’more is practically burned and a little salty
