LinkedIn recently partnered with Harris Poll to ask U.S. professionals what “success” means to them. The responses were a little troubling: Traditional signs of success, like material wealth and enviable job titles, are now eclipsed–sometimes seven times over–by hand-to-mouth concerns like paying off debt and hopefully someday not living paycheck to paycheck anymore. These issues, as you’ll notice from the chart above, are especially acute for women. Yet bizarrely, a press announcement I received of the survey results framed the gender divide as a quirk of temperament, making no mention of the far more likely culprit: the gender pay gap. “Women define success as ‘feeling’ financially successful,” the press statement read, “while men want to ‘show’ that they are financially successful.” But for now, anyway, both are mostly just focused on paying the bills. advertisement … [Read more...] about For most Americans (especially women), success means just paying the bills

Sumanth RamanThat politics makes strange bedfellows is an old adage. In the topsy-turvy world of Tamil Nadu politics, alliances between ideologically-opposed political parties is hardly a new phenomenon. Yet the recent flutter created by a couple of statements on either side hinting at a possible coming together of the two megastars of Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, well and truly stirred the political pot in the state.Haasan is of course a politician already with his party, Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) making its electoral debut in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year and putting up a decent show in some urban areas of the state. Rajinikanth as he often points out is yet to formally enter politics though he has promised to do so in time for the next assembly elections in Tamil Nadu where he has pledged that his to-be-formed party will contest all 234 assembly seats.Close Until recently, and even now by many, Rajinikanth is seen as being soft on the Bharatiya Janata … [Read more...] about Politics | A Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan starrer has set the cat among the pigeons

But there’s no guarantee that you’ll make money here. And that is not just the only risk … [Read more...] about Buying unlisted shares and AIF units a tightrope walk, retail investors should stay away
Saving and investing is must for everyone. As inflation leads to a price rise of essential commodities, your kitty should also grow over time to keep pace with inflation. While investing either you can choose to be an active investor and expect more return than market average, or you can choose to be happy with lower returns. As the name suggests an active investment management style involves hands-on approach. An investor or the fund manager is expected to pick and choose the right security, at the right time and at the right price. The portfolio comprises hand-picked investment opportunities. At times, the investor may take shelter in safe haven options such as cash and gold. The idea is to outperform returns that the market gives.Of course, it comes with its own set of costs – higher fees and the possibility of underperformance to the market as the fund manager or investor may go wrong.Close Fund managers of actively-managed mutual funds decide on which stocks and sectors they … [Read more...] about Explainer | Active or passive investing – which is better?
