Jonathan Drew Associated Press Published 12:06 PM EDT Apr 10, 2019 Durham, N.C. – At least one person has been killed in a gas explosion at a building in downtown Durham, North Carolina. Durham police public affairs manager Wil Glenn says another 15 people have been taken to hospitals after the Wednesday morning explosion that officials have blamed on a gas leak. The city said police and fire officials as well as those from PSNC Energy were responding. Television station video showed flames jumping from windows along with heavy smoke and piles of rubble. The video showed a building with the name “Prescient” on it. The company’s website says its headquarters are in Durham and that its focus is affordable housing. Police cars blocked the streets in several directions of the explosion and a thick acrid smoked hung over a shopping district near downtown Durham. Helicopters circled overhead. GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman was fatally shot by another driver as she tried to leave the scene of a minor accident with two children in her car, said police, who were searching Wednesday for the gunman. The shooting happened Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, but it took several days for details to emerge about the apparent accident that may have stoked tensions before the shooting. Carolyn Rose Tiger, 26, was shot at a busy intersection in a commercial area after the man driving the other car pulled a rifle from his trunk and opened fire, Greensboro Police said in a news release Tuesday. Police said that she and the male driver appear to have been involved in a minor accident, and he tried to block her in with his car. The release said he then “got out of his car and retrieved a rifle from his trunk and opened fire on the victim’s vehicle as it was attempting to leave the area.” Tiger was struck by gunfire, and her car then crashed into a fence. … [Read more...] about N.C. woman with 2 children in car is shot, killed by other driver
RALEIGH, N.C. — A key witness testified Monday that she engaged in fraudulent and illegal activity involving absentee ballots in a congressional race in North Carolina as part of a get-out-the vote operation to benefit the Republican congressional candidate in a race that is still unresolved. In frank testimony before the North Carolina State Board of Elections, Lisa Britt said that she was paid to collect absentee ballots in the 2018 election by McCrae Dowless, a political operative hired by consultants for Republican congressional candidate Mark Harris. Britt said some of the ballots she collected were unsealed and uncompleted and testified she filled out the options left blank for Republican candidates — an admission of vote tampering that violates North Carolina law. The state board has been investigating allegations of such irregularities since before last November's election when Harris finished with an unofficial lead of 905 votes over Democrat Dan McCready and has … [Read more...] about Key witness testifies to tampering with absentee ballots in N.C, House race

Associated Press Published 10:36 AM EST Jan 9, 2019 Raleigh, N.C. – Police in North Carolina say two women sexually assaulted a transgender woman at a Raleigh bar. News outlets report 38-year-old Amber Harrell and 31-year-old Jessica Fowler are charged with second-degree kidnapping and sexual battery. The woman told Raleigh police she was inside the bar’s bathroom in December when Harrell and Fowler started verbally abusing her, exposed themselves and started touching her. The woman says Harrell and Fowler continued to assault her outside the bathroom and ignored her and the bartender’s orders to stop. The two women were released on bond; it’s unclear if they have lawyers. Public bathrooms have been a flashpoint in North Carolina since Republican lawmakers in 2016 required transgender people to use rooms matching their birth certificates. The requirement was rescinded last year. … [Read more...] about Cops: 2 assault transgender woman in N.C. bathroom
