A Romantic New Hotel Just Opened In Romeo And Juliet’s Hometown Of Verona
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The northern Italian city of Verona, famed as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet , gets its first new five-star hotel in decades. Fair Verona is about to get that much more romantic this May, thanks to the opening of its newest luxury hotel Vista Palazzo Verona , housed in a nineteenth century mansion in a quiet courtyard, just a few steps from Juliet’s balcony—one of the city’s most famous attractions. The new boutique bolthole has 16 individually styled keys, plus ultra-luxurious amenities, like an indoor swimming pool (a first for a Veronan hotel); spa and gym; library; wine-tasting room; restaurant; and rooftop terrace, with some of the best views over the red-roofed city. The spa is particularly impressive: During the restoration process, a Roman well was discovered and later incorporated into the sleek design of the spa pool. This ancient-meets-contemporary style continues throughout the … [Read more...] about A Romantic New Hotel Just Opened In Romeo And Juliet’s Hometown Of Verona
France’s Longest Urban Cable Car Opens, 86 Years Late
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are lots of engineering projects that have been delayed by Covid-19 but one in Toulouse in southwest France, delayed for more than 80 years by the outbreak of war and then by the pandemic, finally opened this month. It is France's longest cable car and it's called the Téléo, and surprisingly, it's not in the Alps but links both sides of the Garonne river in France's fourth largest city, Toulouse, in southern France. It was a man called Albert Bedouce who first proposed the scheme in 1936 —he was Minister of Public Works under Prime Minister Léon Blum. However, when World War Two began, the city had to drop its plans. A cable car is a good choice of transport across the city—the area is protected to conserve its natural beauty, which limits how much the existing, and heavily congested roads can be expanded. Plus, there's more than 100 metres of difference in altitude from one side to the other. It's the … [Read more...] about France’s Longest Urban Cable Car Opens, 86 Years Late
Health Ministry to propose “green zones” where bars, nightlife could re-open
Bars and entertainment venues are demanding the right to re-open for business, with reports the Public Health Ministry could allow this in some provinces it would designate as “green zones”. The Bangkok Post reports that owners of nightlife venues will meet with Supoj Malaniyom from the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration today. According to Khathawut Thongthai from the Association of Entertainment Professionals, business owners are grateful for the relief measures and state aid received during the pandemic, but he points out that such measures are not sustainable and it’s now time to move on. “With daily Covid-19 infections having declined and the national vaccination campaign extended to cover all age groups, it is now time to ease curbs on nightspots and allow the industry to get back on its feet.” Nightlife operators have been piling the pressure on for some time now, originally calling for businesses in tourist provinces – the so-called “blue zones” – to be … [Read more...] about Health Ministry to propose “green zones” where bars, nightlife could re-open

Father’s Day Gift Guide: Best Meats And Seafood For Dad’s BBQ Grill
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If Dad is a backyard barbecue hero, he can never have too much meat and seafood to grill. From the gourmet grilling connoisseur to the lazy cook to the guy who loves grilling but burns everything, here is something perfect for every father who cooks with gas, fire or smoke, at many different price points. Having written extensively on food, grilling and smoking for more than 20 years, I have personally tried, enjoyed and can enthusiastically recommend every single one of these providers. Best All Around: I love Allen Brothers , the venerable Chicago butcher shop - since 1893 and the city’s stockyards days - that supplies many top steakhouses across the nation and has been doing mail order meat for a long time. I’m talking every kind of beef from world-class burger patties to whole tenderloins to bone-in … [Read more...] about Father’s Day Gift Guide: Best Meats And Seafood For Dad’s BBQ Grill
Will Ukraine’s Army Invade Russia?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With Ukrainian forces now on the Russian border, a momentous question has arisen. Will Ukrainian troops now invade Russia? Ukrainian boots on Russian ground might divert forces from the main Russian offensive to the south, embarrass the Russian government. and boost Ukrainian morale. It would also be sweet revenge in a conflict that has almost totally been waged on Ukrainian territory. However, advancing into Russia would more likely be an enormous blunder. It would dissipate Ukrainian military power, possibly provoke Moscow into using chemical or nuclear weapons, and support Russia’s claim that invading Ukraine was a “defensive” war. Perhaps most important, it would risk depriving Ukraine of support from Western nations reluctant to risk escalating the conflict into World War III. So far, there are no public indications that Ukraine is contemplating sending ground troops into Russia. Nonetheless, in a war where … [Read more...] about Will Ukraine’s Army Invade Russia?

Malaysia’s digital economy to contribute 22.6% to GDP, create half a million jobs by 2025
SINGAPORE: The digital economy is expected to contribute 22.6 per cent of Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and create over 500,000 jobs by 2025, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba. Dr Adham said Malaysia has placed priorities on expanding the adoption of digital consumer tools (e-commerce and digital payments); attracting, training, and retaining digital talent; fostering digital entrepreneurial ventures; providing fast fibre optics and mobile broadband Internet access; as well as coordinating innovation between universities, businesses and digital authorities. "The level of digital evolution helped cushion against the pandemic’s economic impact. For example, more digitally-evolved economies tend to derive a larger share of their GDP from high-tech sectors, where the workforce can shift to remote working more readily. "In addition, they tend to be better at delivering public services online due to superior infrastructure, experience … [Read more...] about Malaysia’s digital economy to contribute 22.6% to GDP, create half a million jobs by 2025
‘Angelyne’ dresses up Emmy Rossum in a two-dimensional look at the ‘billboard queen’
(CNN) "Angelyne" approximates its subject in the wrong ways: It's big, attention-getting and has all the depth of a billboard. Emmy Rossum stars and produced this limited series, which doesn't profess to be truth but rather a facsimile of it. In a year that's already given the world the superior "Pam & Tommy," consider this evidence that impressive makeup alone isn't enough. Making good use of period songs to set both the time and whimsical tone (Electric Light Orchestra gets a workout), the story portrays the title character as a woman of mystery, one with big dreams who fastidiously avoids questions about her past and repeats "I'm not a woman, I'm an icon" like a mantra. Building a shrine to Marilyn Monroe, Angelyne sings with a bar band, announces she wants to be "like Barbie" and turns one man after another into devotees, the key one for these purposes being a billboard king (Martin Freeman) who acquiesces to her wishes, even if the ultimate goal of plastering her … [Read more...] about ‘Angelyne’ dresses up Emmy Rossum in a two-dimensional look at the ‘billboard queen’
