Amazon cloud unit on course for US$3 tril value, Redburn says

June 29, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A LONDON (June 29): Amazon.com Inc’s cloud-storage business is on a clear path toward a US$3 trillion value, almost triple what the whole company is worth now in the stock market, according to a Redburn Ltd analyst. The unit, Amazon Web Services, is so powerful that the company may decide at some point to split it off from the massive, slower-growing online retail operation, analyst Alex Haissl wrote in a 128-page report initiating coverage of the cloud-computing industry. He didn’t say when the US$3 trillion value may be achieved. “Separating AWS may not be on the table for now, but if the performance gap versus the non-AWS parts continues to widen, it could be on the table further down the road,” wrote Haissl, a former head of automotive research at Berenberg and Credit Suisse Group AG who began his career as a police officer in Vienna. Haissl recommends buying Amazon shares and sees the stock reaching US$270 in the next year, the highest target on … [Read more...] about Amazon cloud unit on course for US$3 tril value, Redburn says

KL Bar also opposes Najib’s QC bid, says no indication Najib lost confidence in Shafee to argue SRC case

June 29, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KL Bar), which represents about 10,000 lawyers in the capital, has also objected to Datuk Seri Najib Razak's bid to hire Jonathan Laidlaw, a lawyer from the United Kingdom, for his final appeal in the SRC International Sdn Bhd graft case. The KL Bar echoed the sentiment of the case's prosecution and the Malaysian bar that local lawyers, including Najib's own lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, are more than qualified to handle the case. There is also nothing to suggest that the former prime minister has lost confidence in Shafee to lead the final appeal of the graft case, in which Najib was convicted by the High Court in July 2020 of misappropriating RM42 million worth of funds from SRC, formerly a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. "There is nothing to suggest that [Shafee] has lost confidence to argue the appeal; nor that [Najib] has lost confidence in [Shafee]'s competence to … [Read more...] about KL Bar also opposes Najib’s QC bid, says no indication Najib lost confidence in Shafee to argue SRC case

Queen Elizabeth meets Sturgeon after new push for independence vote

June 29, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

LONDON (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth held a meeting with Scotland's Nicola Sturgeon on Wednesday, a day after the Scottish leader set out plans to push for a second independence referendum to break away from the United Kingdom. Buckingham Palace said the 96-year-old queen, who is spending the week in Scotland, had received Sturgeon as well as a Scottish Parliament official in Edinburgh's Holyrood Palace. On Tuesday, Sturgeon, who is Scotland's first minister, announced plans for a second independence referendum to be held on October 2023, and vowed to take legal action if the British government blocks it. Voters in Scotland, which has a population of around 5.5 million, rejected independence by 55% to 45% in a referendum in 2014. The Scottish National Party, which runs Scotland's semi-autonomous government, says Britain's decision in a referendum in 2016 to leave the European Union - a move opposed by a majority of Scots - means the issue must be put to a second vote. What the future of hybrid work will (and won’t) look like, according to 27 business leaders

June 23, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

The rise of remote work has drastically changed the relationship between companies and their employees. advertisement advertisement What began two years ago as a sudden shift to a work-from-home model has changed collaboration, coordination, and communication permanently. As companies work to find the right balance between flexible work and optimum productivity, the “hybrid” work model is being codified in company policies. The stakes are high: The terms of the new hybrid work contract have a direct bearing on companies’ ability to keep employees happy, and to attract new ones. According to a recent Gallup survey , nearly 60% of employees who can work from home would prefer a hybrid work schedule going forward. At the same time, roughly 60% said they want more structure from their employers when it comes to deciding hybrid work schedules. Less clear for employers, though, is how frequently employees might come into the office. Every company … [Read more...] about What the future of hybrid work will (and won’t) look like, according to 27 business leaders

Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

June 28, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Earlier this year, an Arizona woman whom we’ll call Kelly was completing the paperwork required to get facial feminization surgery. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in her teens, and after years of struggling with depression, she decided as a 20-something to transition. Then reality hit fast: The process is expensive, lengthy, and rarely covered by insurance. “So I did what lots of trans people do,” she tells Fast Company . “I got a job at Starbucks.” advertisement advertisement Starbucks has covered some types of gender-reassignment surgery since 2012. But in a radical move in 2018, it worked with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to unveil a supplemental insurance plan that added coverage of procedures “previously considered cosmetic,” such as breast reduction, forehead contouring, calf implants, and hair transplants. With the requisite medical signoffs, Starbucks workers could get many of these procedures with zero … [Read more...] about Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

Should Cypark shareholders be worried?

June 21, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 13, 2022 - June 19, 2022. - A + A STARTING out as a waste management and environmental company before venturing into the renewable energy (RE) space, Cypark Resources Bhd has been the proxy for the RE theme play, given its exposure to the niche landfill-sanitisation market and the fact that it is the only company of its kind in Malaysia. While there have been ups and downs for Cypark since it was listed about 12 years ago, the last three weeks have been arguably the most challenging period for the company, which intends to convert solid waste into electricity. Its share price plunged 55% to 31 sen on June 10, from 69 sen on May 20. Concerns have been raised over the delays of Cypark’s ongoing projects, including its floating solar plant in Tasik Danau Tok Uban (DTU) in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, and its solid waste modular advance recovery and treatment waste-to-energy (SMART WTE) plant in Ladang … [Read more...] about Should Cypark shareholders be worried?

Tesla Factories Actually Burn Through Skepticism

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Tesl TSLA a is at the center of another controversy. Its newest factories are burning through mountains of cash. Investors are worried about bankruptcy. Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Elon Musk said the Berlin and Austin factories are money furnaces. The headline amped up fear, uncertainty and doubt about the automaker. Shares slipped. Shareholders should beware. FUD works. In fairness, Musk was simply being honest. New factories blaze through capital as they scale up production. Equipment costs can be monumental, especially during an innovation cycle. New employee training, stockpiling components from suppliers, and ongoing construction costs add up too. These cash outlays are stacked up against limited production runs to work out the bugs. The factories in Berlin, Germany and Austin, Texas represent the evolution of the wildly successful “Giga” Shanghai facility, opened in 2019. That Chinese plant … [Read more...] about Tesla Factories Actually Burn Through Skepticism

Coke has a new flavor. It took inspiration from McDonald’s

June 29, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

New York (CNN Business) Coca-Cola has another new flavor. This time, it got some help. The latest product out of Coca-Cola Creations — Coke's innovation platform, which brought us starlight and pixel-flavored sodas — is a collaboration with Marshmello , a masked DJ and electronic music producer. If you think the artist worked with Coke to develop a marshmallow-flavored beverage, you're wrong. Instead, the new flavor has notes of strawberry and watermelon, Marshmello's favorites. "For our third Coca-Cola Creations drop, we sought to add an unexpected remix of flavors to a great Coca-Cola taste," said Oana Vlad, senior director of global strategy at the company, in a statement announcing the collaboration Wednesday. "We created a vibey blend of my favorite flavors in this all-new mix," Marshmello said in a statement. "I think it tastes amazing and I hope fans love it too."
