MoviePass is a $US10-per-month subscription service for going to the movie theatre. It comes with plenty of positives, but it also raises some dilemmas. One of those is how to navigate a relationship when your significant other doesn’t use the service. MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe told TechCrunch that he actually mischaracterized MoviePass’s collection of location data last week at the Entertainment Finance Forum in Los Angeles. During his keynote at the conference, Lowe said: “We get an enormous amount of information. We watch how you drive from home to the movies. We watch where you go afterwards.” This understandably led to many users fearing MoviePass was tracking their every move. But after the growing outrage, Lowe has now said he misspoke, telling TechCrunch: “Sometimes I get all excited about our future vision of a night at the movies and building an ecosystem around it. I need to correct what I said. The way I portrayed what we do is not accurate. Shares of Helios & Matheson Information Technology, the parent company of MoviePass, sank more than 40% Thursday after the company announced it sold new stock at a hefty discount. Helios & Matheson said in a regulatory filing late Wednesday that it had sold 10.5 million shares at a price of $2.75 — a hefty 28% discount form its closing price earlier that day of $3.83. Helios & Matheson, the majority owner of MoviePass, is getting smoked for a second day in a row after more financial difficulties come to light for its movie theatre subscriptions service. The stock was trading down more than 7% Friday, at $US2.38, just 6% of its all-time high of $US38.52 set in October. HMNY has been losing an average of $US20 million per week since September, it admitted in a prospectus filing this week. That same filing priced new shares of the company’s stock well below where the stock was trading, leading to a dramatic selloff on Thursday. To make things worse, Back-to-back financial statements filed by the company this week also include a discrepancy in numbers. When asked about the difference by Business Insider, MoviePass said its prospectus included an error that would be corrected.
