Q&A: Odesza On ‘The Last Goodbye,’ Aspirations Of Scoring Movies And More
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The electronic duo of ODESZA (Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight) recently released their fourth album, The Last Goodbye . Coming a decade after their debut, Summer's Gone , the Washington state duo's latest album finds Mills and Knight growing up musically. Exploring a wide array of styles, including a healthy dose of atmospheric hooks, the record is ODESZA at their most vulnerable, including snippets of the band in therapy. I spoke with the pair about the new album, their dreams of scoring a movie, how the genre of electronic is growing up and seeing friends like Alison Wonderland and Rufus Du Sol inspires them, the current tour and much more. Steve Baltin: Where is today's hotel room? Clayton Knight: We're here in Everett Washington doing rehearsals right now. It's kind of like outside Seattle. Yeah, it's beautiful up here right now, the summer finally showed up. So we are happy that happened. [laughter] … [Read more...] about Q&A: Odesza On ‘The Last Goodbye,’ Aspirations Of Scoring Movies And More
Tough act to follow: Celebs ’fond memories of Cherie Gil
Cherie Gil True to Cherie Gil’s iconic line, “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat,” she’s a tough act to follow. The primera contrabida left a void in the biz that nobody else can fill. Bravo, Cherie, for a life well-lived and for being so well-loved. As my little tribute to Cherie, I asked some of her peers to share their fondest memory of the incredible Eigenmann woman. Vilma Santos Vilma Santos: I will always remember Cherie as a true friend, a very sincere person, a real artist, kalog at napakasayang kasama. Nabawasan tayo ng icon. Ricky Davao Ricky Davao: When I was 16, I would always go to the house of Tita Rosemarie Gil to spend the whole day with Michael and Mark. One time, I saw a very shy Cherie, who was around 13 years old at the time. Hindi pa kami nag-uusap nun, “hi, hello” lang, but she was now making these jokes on the set. She always shone bright, and I feel blessed to have this and so many other memories with her and her … [Read more...] about Tough act to follow: Celebs ’fond memories of Cherie Gil
How To Choose Happiness At Work In A Time Of Turmoil
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Everyone is watching the same movie, but holds conflicting opinions of what it means. Optimists see the recent jobs report showing more than 500,000 new jobs were created. They are encouraged that the unemployment rate is at record lows, and employment in the United States is back to where it was pre-pandemic. Feeling confident in the future, they noticed that the stock market recouped much of its recent losses and wholesale inflation dipped in July. This week, the CDC eased Covid-19 guidelines significantly. Plans are made, as people still have plenty of time left to enjoy the summer. Others who watched the same movie left the theater feeling depressed over runaway inflation and the high prices of gas, food, rent, automobiles and basic necessities. They are anxious about their stock portfolio plunging and spiking interest rates that will prohibit them from being able to purchase a new home. They stress out over … [Read more...] about How To Choose Happiness At Work In A Time Of Turmoil
What We’ve Learned About Dinosaurs Since Jurassic Park Came Out
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Days away from the theaterical release of Jurassic World , the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park series, paleontologists and dinosaur lovers alike are eagerly awaiting the return of the most beloved dinosaur franchise in film history. As a professional dinosaur lover, I've been having fun revisiting what the scientific community has learned from the fossil record since the first Jurassic Park to see what this new film appears to get right about dinosaurs and where it diverges from the consensus. Scientists have known for decades that dinosaurs are related to birds and were most assuredly covered in feathers. Even though dinosaurs were being depicted in illustrations with feathery coatings as early as the late 1970s, it was not until the early 1990s that the mounting comparative anatomical evidence from fossil discoveries elevated the hypothesis of birds being avian dinosaurs to near universal acceptance in the … [Read more...] about What We’ve Learned About Dinosaurs Since Jurassic Park Came Out
Exclusive Premiere: Kompany Releases ‘Feel It All’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Bass music producer Kompany is known for his skull-shattering drops, but his latest release, “ Feel It All ,” takes a different approach with a melodic and euphoric sound that showcases his versatility as a producer. Kompany’s aggressive beats with a bass heavy backdrop initially gained him fame in 2017 after cutting his teeth in the esteemed halls of California’s Icon Collective . He has since released on notable British record label Never Say Die, opened for NGHTMRE on his The Portal Tour and performed at numerous acclaimed festivals, such as Lost Lands, Ultra Music Festival and Ever After . Kompany took the time to share with Forbes the inspiration behind “Feel It All,” how he’s been navigating challenges created by the COVID-19 crisis, the highlight of his career and more. Lisa Kocay: Can you describe your sound in three words? Kompany: “Visceral, industrial [and] chonky.” Kocay: Your … [Read more...] about Exclusive Premiere: Kompany Releases ‘Feel It All’
‘Secret Headquarters’ reveals a too-familiar teen twist on the superhero formula
(CNN) The occasional head-scratching over why movies get sent directly to streaming isn't an issue with "Secret Headquarters," a spin on superheroes that tilts a lot closer to Disney Channel territory than Marvel. The real surprise is that the film was ever earmarked for a theatrical release before cooler heads prevailed, prompting it to land, unspectacularly, on Paramount+. The explanation for that initial distribution trajectory might be as simple as the fact that the film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who has a long legacy of blockbusters. But everything else about the movie has a teen vibe and feels scaled toward a more modest venue and expectations. The story easily boils down to a quick description that reflects the generic nature of the exercise: Teenage Charlie (Walker Scobell, recently featured in another so-so streaming sci-fi/comedy, "The Adam Project" ) is irritated by his absentee dad (Owen Wilson), who has split from his mom and never seems to be around. … [Read more...] about ‘Secret Headquarters’ reveals a too-familiar teen twist on the superhero formula
Jamie Foxx rises again as dad, the vampire hunter, in Netflix’s dreary ‘Day Shift’
(CNN) "Day Shift" is about vampires, but it's one of those Frankenstein-like movies stitched together from used parts, with Jamie Foxx as a family man version of Marvel's Blade , mashed up with horror and buddy comedy. It's the kind of star-driven vehicle that yields obvious benefits to Netflix even if, qualitatively speaking, it doesn't deserve to see the light of day. Indeed, Foxx is clearly a favorite of the Netflix algorithm and likes cashing its checks, having starred in the movie "Project Power" and sitcom "Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!" in the last two years, the latter inspired and produced by his daughter, Corinne Foxx. Parenthood is again at the heart of the plot, such as it is, in "Day Shift," which could just as easily be titled "Dad: Vampire Slayer." Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, a bounty hunter (he masquerades as a pool cleaner) struggling to make ends meet financially, suddenly given a major motivation to earn cash: His ex (Meagan Good) is planning to move away from … [Read more...] about Jamie Foxx rises again as dad, the vampire hunter, in Netflix’s dreary ‘Day Shift’
Richard Branson Taps Into a 400,000-Year-Old Practice to Unleash His Best Ideas. You Can Too
Successful entrepreneurs who make a difference are, in effect, professional storytellers, says Richard Branson . The ability to craft a compelling story behind a product, service, company, or cause has long been one of Branson's great passions. Entrepreneurs who want to excite people and engage hearts and minds should follow Branson's advice--use stories to transfer your ideas to another person. "Storytelling is a great way to get your views across, highlight how you and your company are different than your competitors, and also to work out new ideas," Branson says . Branson doesn't just talk about the power of story to build brands. He uses an ancient, clever practice to build storytelling skills among his Virgin teams and to elicit the best ideas. On Necker, Branson's private island, he likes to end the day swapping stories around an elaborate fire pit. "Storytelling is as old as the campfire, and as young as a tweet," Branson wrote in 2015 about his campfire … [Read more...] about Richard Branson Taps Into a 400,000-Year-Old Practice to Unleash His Best Ideas. Tommy Lee Shares A Naked Picture From His Bathroom
(CTN News) – Tommy Lee shocked his Instagram followers on Thursday morning when he posted a full-frontal nude photo of himself from his bathroom on the social media platform. He captioned the picture with “Ooooopppsss,” the Mötley Crüe rocker said. An X-rated social media upload showed the drummer sitting on marble while wearing only a silver necklace. In spite of the fact that the angle cut off the top half of Lee’s face, his junk was clearly visible on public display, causing some social media users to express their surprise via Twitter. As much as I enjoy following Tommy Lee on Instagram, I have to admit that I am not very passionate about it. That was a very traumatic experience for me. The photo was still available on the platform, so I was wondering how that happened. One of the users wrote, with a number of others pointing out just how long the image has remained online for an “insane amount of time.”. Getting Tommy Lee’s chopper out on Instagram … [Read more...] about Tommy Lee Shares A Naked Picture From His Bathroom
