Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia sponsored his party’s spending bill shortly before his party leaders promised to expedite permits for crucial energy infrastructure; however, the arrangement could easily fall apart as little protections exist to make permitting reform a reality. President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer promised Manchin that they would pass the speed-up permitting for pipeline projects, particularly for the Mountain Valley Pipeline in West Virginia, in addition to their $369-billion climate and tax package, Reuters reported Monday. Despite the party’s promises, permitting reform will not be easy to institute, and even if the Democrats cooperate as the companion bill will still face numerous legal and legislative challenges. About That White House Meeting To Discuss The Semiconductor Supply Chain
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The White House is hosting a virtual summit today to discuss the semiconductor supply chain. Executives from a wide range of companies, including Alphabet (Google), AT&T, Ford, General Motors, GlobalFoundries , Intel , Samsung, Skywater Technology , Stellantis, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ( TSMC ) are set to participate. Notable omissions include AMD, Apple, Nvidia , Qualcomm, and Tesla. What we have to remember is that the companies will all be focused on different problems, so there is great risk of confusion and talking past each other. Here’s a guide to the problems. The automakers will no doubt highlight their critical dependency on semiconductors, and bemoan the losses of production and jobs because of the current shortage . But this is a temporary capacity problem, which came about because the industry was conservative ordering parts a year ago, and by the time they saw that 2020 … [Read more...] about About That White House Meeting To Discuss The Semiconductor Supply Chain
Get Ready For An Explosion Of Productivity In Biotechnology
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If biotech follows the same arc of growth as agriculture or computer technology, it could transform the world. For all of our shortcomings, humans are very good at getting better. The ability to refine and improve our methods and technologies is a defining feature of our species. For thousands of years, we found more effective and efficient ways of working with raw resources like wood and metal, turning them into tools and technologies that get ever more advanced. Now that we're learning to innovate with the complex biological machinery invented by Nature, recent history in other industries suggests the rate of growth could be transformational for everything from manufacturing to medicine to food. During the millennia when humans first stewarded landscapes and livestock, it was in part by way of observation and selection. Seeds from a crop that grows plentifully and reliably are saved; an animal that produces and behaves … [Read more...] about Get Ready For An Explosion Of Productivity In Biotechnology
How Gen Z workers can optimize their time in the office (and why they should)
During the pandemic, around 100 million people in Europe switched to working from home—nearly half of them for the first time. This shift was rapid, with employees quickly noticing the benefits of remote work. These can include freedom from commuting, more time for personal well-being, and increased productivity. advertisement advertisement As we move on from pandemic restrictions, we’ve seen strong, global demand for more flexible forms of working, particularly to retain an element of remote work. While some employees want to work from home permanently, most want what’s coming to be regarded as the best of both worlds : hybrid working. Only a minority of workers now want to return to the office full time. One group which may be particularly keen on hybrid working is young professionals. And for this group, time spent in the office could be especially valuable. Young people and remote work Surveys undertaken during the pandemic indicated … [Read more...] about How Gen Z workers can optimize their time in the office (and why they should)
Is There Any Advantage Left to Working for Goliath?
In the five years since I left a big, corner office at a large corporation , I've experienced the leveling of the playing field between David- and Goliath-sized companies. Back in the day, there might have been a legitimate argument that you should work for a large company to get access to resources…or to have a chance to change the world. I think that argument is deep in the deadpool now. Why? Great training is no longer exclusive to corporate America. Great training used to be unique to large companies. From my experience leading an online training software company, it’s apparent that large companies are increasingly outsourcing employee education in cutting edge topics and technologies to outside experts. It's a rational decision, given the pace of change and the challenge of maintaining the best and brightest in-house. So, subject matter experts now commonly make their expertise available to companies at wholesale rates…and to individuals at retail rates. And they're … [Read more...] about Is There Any Advantage Left to Working for Goliath?

RADICAL LEFT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO INTIMIDATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES… Left-Wing Group Targets Homes Of 6 Conservative SCOTUS Justices A left-wing group published its plans for protests outside of the six conservative Supreme Court justices’ homes, calling them “extremist.” The group, going by “Ruth Sent Us,” published what it claims are the addresses of Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and John Roberts, seemingly in response to the Monday SCOTUS draft opinion leak that signaled the majority of the court may vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. “ANNOUNCING: Walk-by Wednesday, May 11, 2022! At the homes of the six extremist justices, three in Virginia and three in Maryland. If you’d like to join or lead a peaceful protest, let us know,” the website of “Ruth Sent Us” states. “Our 6-3 extremist Supreme Court routinely issues rulings that hurt women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights. We must rise up to force … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Feds Wall Off Supreme Court And Abortion Cash Flows To Dems
An electrical engineer explains how semiconductors are made
1. What is a semiconductor? Generally speaking, the term semiconductor refers to a material—like silicon—that can conduct electricity much better than an insulator such as glass, but not as well as metals like copper or aluminum. But when people are talking about semiconductors today , they are usually referring to semiconductor chips. advertisement These chips are typically made from thin slices of silicon with complex components laid out on them in specific patterns. These patterns control the flow of current using electrical switches, called transistors, in much the same way you control the electrical current in your home by flipping a switch to turn on a light. The difference between your house and a semiconductor chip is that semiconductor switches are entirely electrical—no mechanical components to flip—and the chips contain tens of billions of switches in an area not much larger than the size of a fingernail. 2. What do semiconductors do? … [Read more...] about An electrical engineer explains how semiconductors are made
Opinion: AR-15-style rifle bans in Superior and Boulder will fall in the courts
The only people who do not want safer communities are the perpetrators of violence. Nearly everyone, no matter his or her political persuasion, wants fewer mass shootings, ideally none, fewer criminals with lethal weapons, and less crime generally. Although we all, killers notwithstanding, want the same end, we differ in the means of attaining this goal. But whatever our representatives do on our behalf to make communities safer, such state laws and local ordinances must comport with the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, namely the right to self-protection articulated in the 2nd Amendment and reinforced by the 14th Amendment. U.S. District Court Judge Raymond Moore, an Obama-appointed judge, said as much when he granted the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners a temporary restraining order against the town of Superior’s ban on certain firearms. Earlier this year, the town’s board of trustees adopted a ban on semiautomatic rifles with certain attributes such as a folding stock, … [Read more...] about Opinion: AR-15-style rifle bans in Superior and Boulder will fall in the courts
How is our transition to renewables going? We’re moving forward—but we need to do more
With many nations making efforts to transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy, SciLine interviewed Erin Baker , a professor of industrial engineering and operations at UMass Amherst. Baker discussed the technological, political and regulatory efforts needed for this transition, as well as ways that our fossil fuel-dependent system disproportionately harms poor communities and communities of color. advertisement advertisement The Conversation has collaborated with SciLine to bring you highlights from the discussion, which have been edited for brevity and clarity. How is our country doing at making the transition to renewable energy? advertisement Erin Baker: There has been amazing technological change over the past 15 years. Offshore wind costs 50% less than it did six years ago. Solar has had a sixfold decrease in costs since 2010. And I think there’s a lot of evidence that technology will adapt and improve if … [Read more...] about How is our transition to renewables going? We’re moving forward—but we need to do more
