Review: Victrola Premiere V1 Music System With Built-In Turntable, Soundbar, Wireless Subwoofer
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Victrola is an audio brand with a history stretching back more than a century — to 1906 to be precise. These days the company is probably best known for inexpensive, vintage inspired all-in-one and suitcase style record players. However, this year Victrola made a move into more modern looking, elegant systems including much more capable turntables. They’re calling this the Premiere series. I just wrapped up the evaluation of the Victrola Premiere V1 Music System , a $499.99 offering that includes a stereo audio cabinet with a top-mounted turntable, Bluetooth streaming, and a wireless subwoofer. Adding to its cred, this system was a CES 2022 Innovation Award winner . Victrola V1 Setup The V1 arrived in a single box, well-packaged with egg crate padding and each piece nicely wrapped in protective cloth. Victrola includes a very handy, super-sized (printed on a piece of cardboard the size of the box) quick setup guide that … [Read more...] about Review: Victrola Premiere V1 Music System With Built-In Turntable, Soundbar, Wireless Subwoofer
10 Tools To Help Hack Remote Work
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hybrid work is here to stay. Many organizations have closed their offices or have opted to downsize. A couple of years ago a grainy webcam and spotty voice quality were accepted. Now, there is an expectation to level up your work from home environment. One of the reasons jobseekers have prioritized remote work is to avoid the long commutes in order to spend more time with their families or things they care about outside of work. At one point, I was commuting three hours per day which unsustainable. Six months later I found myself burning both ends of the candle. I think those days are a foregone conclusion, but here are some tools I’ve found to help be more productive when working from remote. The modular desk shelf by ModWood I’ve had a bamboo standing desk from Fully for several years. While it’s spacious being 60 inches in length, the challenge is a lack of storage and my workspace can get cluttered in no time. … [Read more...] about 10 Tools To Help Hack Remote Work
Campfire Audio’s Trifecta IEMs Are Probably The Best You’ll Ever Hear
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As a review of consumer audio, I often get asked: “What are the best headphones or earbuds you’ve ever tested?” Other times, people might ask which headphones I’d recommend they buy if money were no object. However, it’s always been difficult for me to recommend a product because people want different things from their headphones. For example, some people think they want a big fat bass and lots of detail in the treble because they once heard a pair of earphones tuned that way and had their sonic socks blown off. Unfortunately, overblown designs may be impressive at first, but they’ll soon make your ears tired and they distort the music, making it sound nothing like the artist and recording engineer intended. To know if you like a pair of earphones or headphones, you must spend time listening to them, using music you know and love well. Only that way can you know whether a pair of earphones can reproduce music the way you … [Read more...] about Campfire Audio’s Trifecta IEMs Are Probably The Best You’ll Ever Hear

Record Roundup Volume 18: Top Turntable News Of 2022
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The first edition of Record Roundup for 2023 is going to look back to the year before. There were some very interesting developments in the world of turntables and related audio equipment in 2022. The products I covered last year have now been shipping for months and most of them are still available in stores — the special edition models may be hard to find, but record collectors know all about the thrill of tracking down a rare release... It’s hard to pick from the dozens of new launches and announcements I covered here over the past 12 months, but these five stand out. This is a very unique device: a portable record player, powered by a USB-C rechargeable battery, and equipped with a replaceable ATN3600L stylus. Turn An Old Phone Into A Brilliant Handheld Xbox

For a modest outlay, that phone could be turned into a brilliant handheld Xbox console, letting you play hundreds of games without needing a full-blown Xbox. Here’s how to turn an old phone into a handheld Xbox console that costs a fraction of the price of a Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. Review: The +RECORD PLAYER, A Compact All-In-One Audio System With A Pro-Ject Turntable And Killer Sound
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Note: This post has been updated since it was originally published to reflect subsequent testing using optional add-on Apple AirPlay functionality. Serious fans of vinyl and audiophiles who want the ability to listen to records tend to avoid all-in-one record players like the plague. These systems are very popular. They combine a turntable, amplifier, speakers and additional features like Bluetooth wireless in a single wooden cabinet. The vintage appeal and compact size (compared to separate components) keeps them flying off shelves. However... With prices typically $200 or less, no-one is going to mistake these systems for a premium offering. The “wood” is usually fake, the audio output is tinny, the record player often exhibits distortion from the speakers, and the inexpensive stylus used in many of these systems can actually damage records. Those who know better stick to a high quality turntable connected to decent … [Read more...] about Review: The +RECORD PLAYER, A Compact All-In-One Audio System With A Pro-Ject Turntable And Killer Sound
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8 Redefines Tablet Computing… Again
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Microsoft's Surface Pro 8 is the latest 2 in 1 tablet in the Surface line-up . Not only does it showcase Windows 11’s touch-based computing viewpoint , it also brings a new design to the established line. I’ve spent some time with the Pro 8 to get a feel for Microsoft’s new approach to mobile computing. Given this is the eighth major model, you'd assume the Surface Pro 8 is an iteration on top of the Surface Pro 7, with small steps and improvements to update the 2 in 1 to modern standards. And for the most part you would be right. But the Surface Pro 8 draws a lot from the ARM-powered Surface Pro X. I’d argue that the Pro 8 has built its specs of the Pro 7, but the design and styling of the Pro X. When the Surface Pro X was launched in late 2019 (alongside the aforementioned Pro 7 and the Surface Laptop 3) it was Microsoft’s most ambitious 2 in 1 to date. Ahead of Apple’s expected move to ARM-based silicon, the … [Read more...] about Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8 Redefines Tablet Computing… Again
