There's a new Jeff Bezos biopic set to be released this summer that chronicles the Amazon kingpin's endeavor to create an online book store that eventually expanded into an e-commerce empire. Curious entrepreneurs may want to tune in if interested in a small taste of Amazon's beginnings . The biopic, dubbed Bezos , attempts to map out the early days of Amazon by following the challenges faced by the entrepreneur, played by Armando Gutierrez, in the aftermath of quitting his job at the New York-based fund D.E. Shaw. Viewers are reminded of the pain points that any young startup founder may face: access to capital, work/life balance, and poor compensation. A media representative for the film says that Bezos is based on Zero to Hero , written by Tashena Ebanks, which "was created for young readers to inspire them regarding entrepreneurship." While Bezos is most certainly not an Academy Awards contender, it does offer lessons for emerging entrepreneurs. G7 leaders work to ‘starve’ Russia of oil money as Zelensky says he wants the war over by the end of the year
Telfs-Buchen, Austria (CNN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told G7 leaders during a virtual meeting Monday that he wants the war in Ukraine to end by the end of 2022, according to a source familiar with his remarks , as leaders worked to starve Russia of its oil revenues and mitigate the economic fallout of the conflict. The dual missions -- sustain support for Ukraine while easing economic pressures at home -- have defined this year's summit of leading democracies, held high in the Bavarian Alps. While largely united, the leaders are all facing their own political imperatives to see a momentum shift in the fighting and bring an end to the conflict quickly. To that end, leaders were nearing an agreement to try capping the price of Russian oil, depriving the country of revenues that have soared amid the global spike in energy prices. Details were still being ironed out, including whether the top buyers of Russian oil would agree to the limits, but US officials … [Read more...] about G7 leaders work to ‘starve’ Russia of oil money as Zelensky says he wants the war over by the end of the year
How Blackjack Helped Jeff Ma Sell His Startups to Yahoo, Virgin, and Twitter
In 1998, on a riverboat casino on the Red River in Shreveport, Louisiana, the MIT Blackjack Team took the house for $80,000 in just a few hours. It was just one of many such big nights for Jeff Ma, who was a member from 1993 through 2001. Ma says he won about $2 million during that period, and his story was adapted into Ben Mezrich's book Bringing Down the House and the film 21 . Eventually, the casinos refused to let the team--which won so frequently by using sophisticated (and perfectly legal) card-counting techniques--play anymore. But Ma's story was far from over. He used his skills at blackjack to launch, build, and sell three different startups. After selling the first two to Yahoo and Virgin, earlier this month he sold developer-management tool tenXer to Twitter for close to $50 million. Inc . caught up with Ma to talk about the skills he transferred from the casino table to the boardroom table. Blackjack and entrepreneurship Like many startups, the MIT … [Read more...] about How Blackjack Helped Jeff Ma Sell His Startups to Yahoo, Virgin, and Twitter
Living On Bitcoin For A Week: Bitcoin Is The Internet Applied To Money (And I Survived It)
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Day 7. Monday is the last day of Bitcoin living and it’s off to an exhausting start. My first night in the Bitcoin-paid hostel was not especially restful due to noise filtering in from Mission Street and my body’s usual skepticism about an unfamiliar bed. I have plans to meet with security researcher Dan Kaminsky in the Mission in the afternoon so it would be silly to head to the office. I’d love to go to a cafe to work but none in the area take Bitcoin. I don’t think I can take Bitcoin seriously as a currency until tech-forward San Francisco has at least one BTC-friendly coffee shop. 20 Mission has Wi-Fi. I place a Skype call to Pyry Lehdonvirta who is in Helsinki. He is the 29-year-old CEO of SC5, a Finnish HTML5 software developer that started paying 20 of its full-time employees partially in Bitcoin last October when Bitcoin was valued at $40 USD. “The increase in [BTC’s] value has been bad for us,” says Lehdonvirta. … [Read more...] about Living On Bitcoin For A Week: Bitcoin Is The Internet Applied To Money (And I Survived It)

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Journalists do their jobs without much fanfare or recognition. In those rare moments when their work is singled out and heralded, the notoriety can boost their profile, their bottom line and their opportunities to take on bigger challenges. Those who paid fees, ranging from $15 to $40 for each entry, made it known in a Google Group of … [Read more...] about LGBTQ+ Journalists Group Withholds Awards, Keeps Entry Money
No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
PETALING JAYA: You buy a bottle of your favourite fruit juice, slurp it down and then throw it into the nearest bin. The whole process may just take 10 minutes – but that glass bottle could be here for 1,000,000 more years. Glass is not being recycled, at least not in a major way. ALSO READ: No market for recycled glass bottles Most recyclers are business-driven and only focus on materials that give them the most returns, like plastic and paper. Environment and waste management specialist Dr Theng Lee Chong said the reason plastic is favoured over glass is because it can fetch a better price in terms of reselling and production cost. “Other factors that turn recyclers off from glass are that it takes up more space, weighs more and is harder to handle in terms of transportation and logistics. “Not all types of glass can be recycled. Bulbs, sheet glass, windshields and car accessories as well as windows cannot be recycled because some may contain hazardous material like … [Read more...] about No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
