PHUKET: Police are searching for a team of thieves that made off with more than 30 mobile phones and about 10,000 baht in cash early Saturday morning. The thieves created a key for the shop shutter of Sapum Mobile on Thepkasattri Road in order to break in. However, they were unable to access the more expensive mobile devices, such as Samsung Galaxies and iPhones, because they are kept in a separate safe, explained Maj Sakol Krainara of Phuket City Police. “The thieves made off with cash and devices worth a combined 70,000 baht. However, we do have CCTV images of the thieves, so we are doing our best to track them down,” said Maj Sakol. “We have collected evidence from the shop, as well as finger prints.” Shop owner Udon Saensip suspects that the thieves had scouted out the place ahead of time and knew that nobody was there at night, added Maj Sakol. — Kritsada Mueanhawong Get more from The Thaiger FREE APP: ANDROID or iOS | HAVE YOUR SAY FORUM | … [Read more...] about Mobile phone thieves knock over Phuket shop

Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India
The top AIDS research institute in India is set to undertake a first-ever study to assess the role of dating apps such as Tinder and OkCupid, among others, in contributing to the HIV and AIDS burden in the country. In the West, such studies have established that dating apps may be leading to a rise in HIV cases among adolescents, but no empirical evidence is available from India yet on whether there is a change in risk behaviour following the use of such dating apps. Scientists at the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that their discussion with various stakeholders suggested that a large number of men having sex with men and female sex workers may have shifted to dating apps. “Therefore, we thought this would be an important study to understand the correlation between dating apps and AIDS in India in the changing social scenario that is heavily dependent on technology, mobile phones and internet,” said a senior … [Read more...] about Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India

Messaging services are one of the greatest challenges along with payments, cloud storage, apps and wearables which also limit user portability between platforms. There are many different mobile ecosystems available today, with varying approaches to user data. Ultimately, Moor Insights & Strategy believes that openness and interoperability enable competition and consumer choice, which drives the industry forward towards better products and consumer experiences. In this brief, the first in a two-part series, we’ll examine the different approaches—how they limit consumer choice and the ability to move freely between ecosystems, and how this affects others. US pries into over 100 trader and banker phones in texting probe
Reuters filepix for illustration purpose only - A + A NEW YORK (May 18): The US is forcing Wall Street banks to embark on a systematic search through more than 100 personal mobile phones carried by top traders and dealmakers in the largest-ever probe into clandestine messaging on platforms such as WhatsApp. The Securities and Exchange Commission has been sending firms lists of key positions — in some cases pointing to around 30 people including heads of certain investment banking teams or trading desks — that are subject to the review, according to people with direct knowledge of the requests. Personnel in those roles are being ordered to hand over phones so devices can be examined by lawyers. The aim is to gauge how pervasively Wall Street professionals use unauthorized messaging platforms to chat with each other or clients as regulators decide which firms to punish, and how hard, for failing to preserve business-related messages sent via unapproved platforms. … [Read more...] about US pries into over 100 trader and banker phones in texting probe
