The second week of July saw the Indian share markets lose their gains due to fears that the US Federal Reserve would step forward with more aggressive rate hikes because of the soaring inflation. It was also projected that the Reserve Bank of India would hike rates due to strong domestic inflation. The third week of July saw Indian share markets ending positively. American recession fears collide with reality
New York (CNN Business) The American economy didn't get the memo that it's supposed to already be in a recession. The brutal GDP report released on July 28, showing the economy had contracted for a second quarter in a row, led some to insist the much-feared recession had already arrived. The good, the bad and the unknown of the inflation news And in some ways that makes sense: Since 1948, every period of back-to-back quarters of negative growth coincided with a recession. But the recession-is-already-here argument has been severely undermined since that GDP report came out. A series of events in the past 10 days suggest those recession calls are, at a minimum, premature. Yes, the economy is cooling off after last year's gangbusters growth. But no, it does not appear to be suffering the kind of downfall that would qualify as a recession. Stocks struggle as China rate cut sends oil tumbling
The German share price index DAX graph is pictured at the stock exchange in Frankfurt, Germany, August 12, 2022. REUTERS/Staff LONDON – Global shares struggled to advance on Monday while investors digested news of an unexpected cut in Chinese interest rates as data pointed to faltering growth in the world’s second largest economy, sending oil prices nearly 2 percent lower. Weaker U.S. stock index futures also weighed on sentiment, while a steadier dollar knocked gold. The MSCI all country index was barely firmer, a month-long advance having whittled away the benchmark’s decline for the year to about 13 percent. China’s central bank cut key lending rates to revive demand as data showed the economy unexpectedly slowing in July, with factory and retail activity squeezed by Beijing’s zero-COVID policy and a property crisis. Until now, investors have been grappling with how much further central banks in the United States and Europe would hike rates when they meet next month. … [Read more...] about Stocks struggle as China rate cut sends oil tumbling
China shocks with rate cut as data show ‘alarming’ slowdown
- A + A HONG KONG/BEIJING (Aug 15): China's economic slowdown deepened in July due to a worsening property slump and continued coronavirus lockdowns, with an unexpected cut in interest rates unlikely to turn things around while those twin drags remain. Retail sales, industrial output, and investment all slowed and missed economists' estimates in July. The surveyed jobless rate for those aged 16-24 climbed to 19.9%, a record high and headache for the Communist Party as it gears up for a major congress in coming months that is expected to give President Xi Jinping a precedent-defying third term in power. "July's economic data is very alarming," said Raymond Yeung, Greater China economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. "Authorities need to deliver a full-fledged support from property to Covid policy in order to arrest further economic decline." The data suggest a crisis of confidence among Chinese businesses and households, adding another … [Read more...] about China shocks with rate cut as data show ‘alarming’ slowdown
Maybank’s loan to 1MDB irrelevant to charges faced by Najib in SRC trial, says Sithambaram
Sithambaram: Therefore, the granting of RM4.17 billion to 1MDB cannot create any conflict of interest on the part of Justice Nazlan as SRC was no longer part of 1MDB at that material time. (Photo by Suhaimi Yusuf/The Edge) - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): Ad hoc prosecutor Datuk V Sithambaram submitted on Monday (Aug 15) that the loans given out by Maybank to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and Putra Perdana Development Sdn Bhd (PPD) were irrelevant to the charges faced by Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial. He said there was no conflict of interest on the part of the trial judge in the SRC case, Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, just because Nazlan had previously served as Maybank’s general counsel. Submitting in the Federal Court, Sithambaram said that at the time of the deliberation of the RM4.17 billion loan to 1MDB, the company was a separate legal entity from SRC, and therefore the loan had nothing to do with SRC. He pointed out … [Read more...] about Maybank’s loan to 1MDB irrelevant to charges faced by Najib in SRC trial, says Sithambaram
To sustain its operations, Air Selangor insists periodical tariff reviews needed
This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 8, 2022 - August 14, 2022. - A + A THE recent increase in water tariffs for non-domestic users this year will only partially defray burgeoning operational costs and capital expenditures (capex), says Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), which insists a further tariff review is essential to its long-term sustainability. The sole water operator for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya says it is crucial for water tariffs to be periodically reviewed by Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) and set at a level that can sustain its operations over the long term. “As a water operator, Air Selangor needs stable and consistent capex investments to develop new water treatment plants to meet increasing demand, lay new pipes and replace old and ageing pipes. “Air Selangor’s financial sustainability remains highly dependent on water tariffs. The current tariffs are insufficient for us … [Read more...] about To sustain its operations, Air Selangor insists periodical tariff reviews needed
