Once a second workout was lined up days before the draft, perhaps the desire to add him to the group should have been obvious. But in the shocker of the night, the Sixers traded the rights to hometown kid Mikal Bridges in order to bring Zhaire Smith into the fold, in a move that will be debated for quite some time. Before we get to the players involved, the value of this deal is important. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowksi, Bridges is headed to Phoenix in exchange for the draft rights to Smith and a valuable future selection. The Sixers clearly liked both players a great deal, but the pick they acquired in the transaction is a pick originally owed to Phoenix by Miami as part of the Goran Dragic trade. That pick, which conveys in 2021, was completely unprotected when sent to Phoenix. It's not clear yet whether the Suns have added any protections to the pick, as the Sixers did in order to hold onto the Lakers pick in the Markelle Fultz trade, but this Miami pick is a serious … [Read more...] about 2018 NBA Draft: Why the Sixers traded for Zhaire Smith after originally drafting Mikal Bridges
After a lot of hemming and hawing leading up to the draft about possible trades and moves for "hotter" names, it ultimately came down to the local kid. With the No. 10 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Sixers went with Villanova's Mikal Bridges, a player they'd been connected to long before the draft process began in earnest. It may not be the highest upside or the sexiest pick in the world, but Bridges slots right into what the Sixers want to do. Standing 6'7" with a wingspan over 7' long, Bridges is long, springy athlete who will give Brett Brown another wing to beef up his defense. A three-headed monster of Bridges, Robert Covington, and Ben Simmons guarding the 2-4 spots is as good as it gets, with switchability and athleticism all over the place. At his best, Bridges will flash lockdown on-ball defense that combines the necessary physical tools with a keen awareness of where the physicality line is. Even while dealing with whistle-happy referees at the college level, he was able to … [Read more...] about 2018 NBA Draft: Sixers draft Mikal Bridges with No. 10 pick

Philadelphia: Mikal Bridges, SF, Villanova Making 104 3s last season at Villanova, Bridges is an elite shooter with great defensive skills. Bridges is long and athletic and makes a good fit on a 76ers team that needed perimeter defense. 9. New York: Kevin Knox, SF, Kentucky The Knicks took the 6-foot-9 forward with the ninth selection. Knox was compared to former Piston Tobias Harris by another former Piston, Chauncey Billups. 8. Cleveland: Collin Sexton, PG, Alabama With quickness and explosiveness Sexton is very dangerous in the open court. He's known for working extremely hard, but whether or not he'll ever play with LeBron James is still an open question. 7. Chicago: Wendell Carter, C, Duke A versatile center, Carter is a great, fundamental rebounder. His shooting stoke is already smooth but will probably improve with the Bulls. 6. Orlando: Mohamed Bamba, C, … [Read more...] about Live updates: Mikal Bridges drafted by 76ers
First up on the list: the aforementioned Bridges, who played his college ball just down the road at Villanova. When he arrived on the NCAA scene in 2015-16 following a redshirt season, Bridges was an exceptional role player who still had a lot of work to do to look the part of a surefire NBA prospect on offense. He was more a bundle of energy and tools than anything during Villanova's first championship run, a bench figure on a team loaded with upperclassmen and well-rounded players. A lot has changed since 2016, and the most important progression for Bridges' NBA hopes has come in the three-point department. He was not much of a shooter in either volume or accuracy during his first season with Jay Wright, but over the course of the two seasons since he has turned himself into a high-volume marksman from beyond the arc. Kyle Korver is the last prominent former Bull standing in the playoffs. And you have questions on a whole slew of topics.Assuming the Bulls don’t strike draft-lottery gold, how strongly has the organization considered trading down from the 6-7 slot? I like Mikal Bridges a lot for this roster, but he would have better value getting drafted 10th instead of sixth. But if they don’t bear fruit, I don’t think you can get hung up on value. If Bridges is the fit, he’s the fit. I’ve alluded to agreeing that No. 6 might seem high for Bridges given there are other players with so-called upside who could be there as well. But particularly with the Bulls being in the second season of a rebuild and having three positions locked down, I don’t … [Read more...] about Bulls Q&A: Is No. 6 too high to draft Mikal Bridges?
