Terrence Romeo had a forgettable first game for San Miguel Beer on Friday. Besides a 124-118 loss to prized rookie CJ Perez and Columbian Dyip, the high-scoring guard left the Cuneta Astrodome court with a sprained ankle. Romeo suffered the injury when he accidentally stepped on Rashawn McCarthy's foot in the third quarter. He was subbed out and never returned. "Gusto ko sanang pilitin pa na ilaro, pero inisip ko pagka pinilit ko, lalo lang ako . . . makakasama lang ako sa team dahil di ako makakahabol sa depensa," Romeo said in an article posted on ABS-CBN Sports website. He tallied 7 points and 4 assists, making 2 of 7 shots in 12 minutes before hurting himself in the McCarthy play. Romeo said he wants to see action in San Miguel's blockbuster tussle with Barangay Ginebra on Sunday, but it depends on the status of his ankle. "Kailangan ko pang pakiramdaman pag-uwi ko sa bahay kung kaya," he said. "Kapag ka siguro namaga, baka hindi ko maibalik sa . . . MANILA, Philippines—Not even a month after wrapping up its 43rd season, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is ready to begin a new year. The league opens its 44th season on Sunday at the Philippine Arena, with Barangay Ginebra and TNT KaTropa getting the ball rolling in the 2019 PBA All-Filipino Cup. Before that, however, the PBA will officially close its 43rd season with the Leo Awards to honor its brightest stars from last year. The three teams under the San Miguel Corp. — San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra, and Magnolia — have been tagged as favorites in the Philippine Cup after ruling the three conferences last year, with the Beermen favored to annex a fifth straight All-Filipino crown. It would be foolish to count out any team, however, especially after a brief but busy offseason that saw several franchises overhaul their rosters and draft talented rookies who can make an immediate impact. MANILA, Philippines—A week into the latest chapter of his basketball career, Terrence Romeo is still adjusting to his new reality as a San Miguel Beerman. And he is enjoying every second of it. Romeo's turbulent stint with TNT KaTropa abruptly ended in December, when the team officially placed him on the trading block midway through the month. He was soon acquired by San Miguel, the defending Philippine Cup champions, which already boasts of the most potent starting five in the league. The flashy guard acknowledged he is still in the process of learning how San Miguel plays. after all, he has only been practicing with them for a week, and they spent a chunk of that time in a team-building seminar. "Iniisip ko pa kung paano ako makakatulong sa team," he said during the PBA Media Day at Solaire on Thursday. There is no doubting Romeo's talent or his scoring ability, but there are plenty of questions about what his role will be in a loaded San Miguel team that already features the … [Read more...] about PBA: Bonding Beermen? With its lineup intact, coach Tim Cone believes Barangay Ginebra still has the best chance to match against "super team" San Miguel Beer in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, which opens Sunday. "There's something to be said about being intact, there's something to be said about continuity. For us it is paramount that we stay intact, keep our group together," Cone said on Thursday during the league's first media day. "We're very comfortable with our chemistry, comfortable with our system, everybody really understands what's going on and feel we can play in a deeper level, so I think we'll grow and we'll be better." San Miguel recently figured in a blockbuster trade, acquiring high scoring guard Terrence Romeo while sending David Semerad, Brian Heruela, and a 2021 first-round draft pick to TNT. This made the Beermen, who already has the likes of June Mar Fajardo and Christian Standhardinger, more formidable.
