Chris Gray, who worked for CPL, a Dublin-based outsourced company which moderates content for Facebook, knows first-hand the toll that content moderation can take. When he worked for the contractor between 2017 and 2018, he began his training by reviewing images and video that users had reported for being pornographic. It would prove to be a relatively gentle introduction. His role then shifted into moderating what he terms “the high-priority” content, for the U.K. and Ireland, including bullying, threats of violence, hate speech, and graphic violence—”just all the nasty stuff, and all the worst you can imagine of the world,” Gray recalls. After that he was viewing Islamic State executions, beatings, murder, torture, a woman stoned to death, child exploitation, the torture of animals, including video footage of dogs being cooked alive.
