Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sen. Mitt Romney wants to stop President Joe Biden from canceling student loans. Here’s what you need to know — and what it means for your student loan debt . Student Loans Romney (R-UT) and four Republican senators introduced the Student Loan Accountability Act, which would: prohibit the Biden administration from enacting wide-scale student loan cancellation to forgive all, or some, student loans for borrowers; and include exemptions for existing targeted federal student loan forgiveness, student loan cancellation or student loan repayment programs such as public service loan forgiveness and teacher loan forgiveness. “It makes no sense for the Biden Administration to cancel nearly $2 trillion in student loan debt,” Romney said. “This decision would not only be unfair to those who already repaid their loans or decided to pursue alternative education paths, but it would be wildly inflationary at … [Read more...] about Mitt Romney Proposes Bill To Stop Biden From Canceling Student Loans

S&P 500, Dow slip as Cisco drags, Nasdaq steady after selloff
- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (May 19): The S&P 500 and the Dow extended losses on Thursday as Cisco Systems slumped after it gave a dismal outlook, while investors fretted over the impact of surging inflation on economic growth and corporate earnings. Shares of the networking gear maker slumped 12.7% as it lowered 2022 revenue growth outlook, taking a hit from Russia exit, as well as component shortage due to China lockdowns. Kohl's Corp slipped 1.1% after the department store chain cut its full-year profit forecast, the latest US retailer to flag a hit from four-decades high inflation. The S&P consumer staples index fell 1.9% to hit a seven-month low and was the biggest decliner among the 11 major sectors, as retail firms face the brunt of rising prices hurting the purchasing power of US consumers. "The consumer component is now starting to weaken, which bolsters the perspective that we are indeed heading into a recession," said Randy Frederick, managing … [Read more...] about S&P 500, Dow slip as Cisco drags, Nasdaq steady after selloff
Waging War On Quantum
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Quantum computing will never work. Keeping enough qubits stable long enough to do any significant calculating or processing, is a mathematical impossibility. The whole idea that one day quantum computers will discover new miracle drugs, or crack public encryption systems, is a mirage. Even worse, it’s a hoax. That’s been the message from so-called quantum skeptics for a decade or more, including physicists like Gil Kalai of Hebrew University and Mikhail Dyankov of the University of Montepellier—all in spite of the fact that quantum computers have continued to grow in sophistication and qubit power. Most experts now agree it’s not a question if a large-scale quantum will emerge that can break into public encryption systems using Shor’s algorithm, but when . But earlier this month a group of offshore short sellers appropriately named Scorpion Capital used these dubious claims to attack and drive down the share price of … [Read more...] about Waging War On Quantum

Why Israel Drew 28 Times More Venture Capital Per Capita Than the U.S.
Despite the flourishing of work from anywhere during the pandemic , it still matters where a startup is located. That's because, as I wrote in Startup Cities , regions of the world differ in the vitality of their local Startup Commons -- a collection of regional resources that at best provide an irresistible attraction for capital and talent or at worst repel both. This comes to mind in considering the flow of venture capital around the world in 2021. A striking conclusion is that on a per capita basis, capital flows into Israel were a whopping 28 times more than those in the U.S. To be sure, 2021 venture capital flow into the U.S. was way larger than into Israel -- up at 154 percent in 2021 to $330 billion versus 136 percent higher to $25.4 billion, according to NoCamels But Israel's population of about nine million is a fraction of the U.S.'s 330 million people. Hence, Israel's $28,000 in venture capital invested per capita in 2021 is far above the … [Read more...] about Why Israel Drew 28 Times More Venture Capital Per Capita Than the U.S.
PM Prayut announces a 5-point plan for the future economy
In an online meeting hosted by the National Economic and Social Development Council, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced his intention to revise Thailand’s economic and production outlook and methods. The plan looks towards future trends and the increasingly ubiquitous digital economy and aims to get Thailand in line for growing the economy now and in new sectors. The goals would be part of the next national economic and social development plan, the 13th plan set to launch from 2023 to 2027. The current 12th plan was enacted for 2017 to 2022 but the secretary-general of the NESDC warns it will most likely miss all its targets due to the widespread negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that has flattened much of the economy, especially the tourism sector that accounts for about one-fifth of Thailand’s economy. PM Prayut proposed a 5-item strategy to address growing and enhancing the economy: Thailand would first need a complete overhaul of how goods are produced in … [Read more...] about PM Prayut announces a 5-point plan for the future economy
Why You Should Make Resolutions Even When You Know You’ll Fail
There are two truths to New Year's resolutions : Many people make them, and many people break them. Research suggests that nearly one in four Americans make resolutions, but in general, those resolutions don't stick. Studies show that as the days tick by in January and February, visits to the gym drop and visits to fast-food restaurants rise. January 1 inspires so much attention and encouragement--new year, new you! But before long, the energy we feel around the novelty of a new habit wears off. New year, same you. I've been studying happiness and good habits for years, and in my observation, many people have abandoned their New Year's resolutions by February 28--a day we could call Discouragement Day, though I've seen harsher terms such as Quitter's Day or Fall Off the Wagon Day used to describe the day of stopping. Consider the person who resolved to go for a daily run before breakfast. On January 1, and for a few weeks, this habit seemed new and rewarding. … [Read more...] about Why You Should Make Resolutions Even When You Know You’ll Fail
