Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 12:03 PM EDT May 8, 2019 Among the top positions of need for Michigan football in the 2020 recruiting cycle is running back. In 2019, U-M only signed one Top100 back, Zach Charbonnet, after 4-star commitment Eric Gray flipped to Tennessee late in the cycle. In 2018, Michigan signed Christian Turner and Hassan Haskins, who flipped back and forth between running back and linebacker throughout his first two years on campus. With that in mind, the U-M coaching staff is looking to restock the position. Josh Gattis' "speed in space" philosophy has the Wolverines eyeing some different style runners as they look to give opposing defenses as many looks as possible. Here are five prospects the Michigan staff appears to be honing in on as summer approaches: Laurel (Md.) St. Frances Academy 4-star Blake Corum Corum has been viewed as a top target for months as U-M running backs coach Jay Harbaugh hopes to beat USC, LSU and … [Read more...] about Michigan football recruiting: 5 RBs they like class of 2020
Nick Baumgardner Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Apr 11, 2019 You'll have to be there. A year after canceling the planned spring game due to weather concerns, Michigan football is bringing back its annual event with a change or two. The game, which will actually be more of a practice session, won't air on television. Gates to Michigan Stadium open at 4 p.m., the team takes the field at 5 p.m. There will be radio coverage provided starting at 4:45 p.m. (and on MGoBlue.com). But if you want to see it, you'll have to be there. I'll be there. And here's what I'll be watching for as Michigan winds down spring drills: More: Michigan football's modernized offense not all that new to its talent Right tackle At some point, Jim Harbaugh's going to have the team go live. We'll see how things get sorted out, but the fact this isn't a split-squad spring game means we'll likely get a better look at how the entire first-team offense and first-team defense looks … [Read more...] about Michigan football: 5 things to watch for at the spring game
Angelique S. Chengelis The Detroit News Published 6:34 PM EDT Mar 19, 2019 Ann Arbor — Back in the old days, oh, say about two years ago, Michigan’s offensive line was the target of plenty of finger pointing. Ed Warinner, who developed some great, championship offensive lines at Ohio State, arrived a year ago (after a season at Minnesota) and within a few weeks, the linemen were walking taller — or at least it seemed that way — and speaking with renewed confidence. Simpler, they said, everything was made simpler. And what that meant, simply, is Warinner took a lot off their plates and let them focus on fundamentals and prevented them from overthinking. There’s no fool-proof way to evaluate an offensive line statistically. Sure, rushing stats are often used, but look at the difference in sacks and tackles allowed from the 2017 to the 2018 seasons. Michigan ranked 110th nationally of 129 teams in sacks allowed and 91st in tackles for loss … [Read more...] about Michigan’s improved offensive line returns largely intact
Nick Baumgardner Detroit Free Press Published 12:31 PM EST Feb 13, 2019 Pep Hamilton's departure from Michigan's football program officially went in the books as a resignation, with the university willing to pay his base salary through the summer. Hamilton's separation agreement with the university, signed Feb. 4, was obtained by the Free Press via a Freedom of Information Act request. In the letter, sent from Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel to Hamilton, Manuel outlined he accepted Hamilton's resignation on Feb. 4 and agreed the school would deliver his base pay ($1 million annually) through June 30. The agreement stipulates Hamilton will not be eligible for employee benefits through that date. He also will not receive the $250,000 retention bonus he had in his deal for 2019. [ Ex-Michigan assistant pep Hamilton to become XFL head coach/GM ] "This will confirm our discussions regarding your employment at the University of Michigan. … [Read more...] about Michigan football settles with ex-assistant Pep Hamilton
