Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 3:05 PM EDT Mar 14, 2019 CHICAGO — Instead of facing a team that swept it this season, No. 6 Michigan State will open Big Ten tournament play looking for its own trifecta – and a milestone victory for Tom Izzo. No. 9 seed Ohio State went up 20 points with 7:30 to play and then held on to defeat 8-seeded Indiana on Thursday, 79-75, in the second round of the Big Ten tournament. MSU won 86-77 at Ohio State on Jan. 5, then defeated the Buckeyes 62-44 on Feb. 17 in East Lansing. Indiana dealt the Spartans two of their four conference losses this season. It will be a chance for Izzo to earn his 600th career win. The Spartans’ 24th-year coach is 599-231 … [Read more...] about Michigan State basketball to face Ohio State in Big Ten tournament

Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 3:08 PM EDT Mar 13, 2019 CBSSports.com published two NFL mock drafts from separate writers. One of them has the Detroit Lions taking a defensive end. The other has them ... trading up to take a quarterback. Which one has your attention? R.J. White had the creative juices flowing in this post-free agency frenzy edition. He has the Lions trading the eighth overall pick plus their second-round selection (43rd overall) to Tampa Bay for No. 5 and No. 70. And with that fifth overall pick, White has the Lions taking Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins. "Out of left field? Perhaps, but the Lions did meet with Haskins at the combine, then spent free agency throwing gobs of money at players like Trey Flowers, Justin Coleman and Jesse James," White wrote. "It sure seems like they're laying the foundation to make a run, and the blueprint in the current NFL is to do it with a rookie-deal QB. I'd expect Matthew Stafford to … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions get Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins in mock draft
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Feb 17, 2019 EAST LANSING — The last time Michigan State faced Ohio State, both teams were riding hot streaks and were ranked among the top 14 in the nation. The Buckeyes hit a slide, losing 86-77 to the Spartans and dropping five of their next six. They fell out of the national rankings. The Spartans kept winning, climbing as high as sixth in the AP poll, until a three-game skid that has since ended with two wins in a row. No. 11 MSU hosts Ohio State Sunday at Breslin Center. It is another game toward chasing a Big Ten title for the second-place Spartans (20-5, 11-3), and an opportunity for the Buckeyes (16-8, 6-7) to get a signature win toward their NCAA tournament resume. “We’re back to what made us successful in the past,” MSU guard Cassius Winston said Thursday. “We’re getting stops, we were rebounding the ball really well and getting out in transition. Nick (Ward) is doing a good job … [Read more...] about Michigan State basketball vs. Ohio State: Scouting report, prediction
Orion Sang Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Jan 29, 2019 Michigan basketball has had some spirited games against Ohio State during John Beilein's time in Ann Arbor. Last season, the Wolverines traveled to Columbus, opened up a 20-point lead before halftime — and lost by nine. Michigan (19-1 overall, 8-1 Big Ten) has compiled a 43-6 record since that collapse. It turned around the team's record last season — and led to a change in team identity. "It certainly helped us get from a very middling type of record to what we’ve been able to do since that game," Beilein said on a teleconference Monday afternoon. "I think that we have a tremendous record since that game. "I know it had an effect on that season ... we created a bigger edge on our team after that one ... an emphasis on defense, an emphasis on playing through adversity and finding a way to make things happen even when things aren’t going your way.” The two teams will meet … [Read more...] about Michigan vs. Ohio State: Scouting report, prediction
Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Jan 13, 2019 Too far, Ohio State football. Too far. In a move more befitting a big-time bank heist — or a vindictive love triangle between teenagers — the Buckeyes swiped two Michigan football assistant coaches, Greg Mattison and Al Washington, in two days. So that’s the way it’s gonna be under new OSU coach Ryan “Lights Out” Day’s regime, eh? First, has anyone seen Jay Harbaugh lately? Are we sure he’s safe and in a secure location? Second … hey, Buckeyes, keep your dirty mitts off our stuff in Michigan! What’s next? You guys gonna come after Bob Seger, the Mackinac Bridge and Zingerman’s? Who wants to live in Ohio anyway, with all its show-off clean air from having vehicle-emissions testing, its glitzy well-paved toll roads, and those look-at-me football national championships that were won this century? We’ve got Kristen Bell, a great shoreline and … [Read more...] about Hey, Ohio State, keep your dirty mitts off Michigan’s stuff!
