From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
DISH lit up a new 5G cellular network in more than 120 cities on June 14, including Grand Junction and Pueblo, meeting an early target federal regulators had set for the construction of the nation’s fourth wireless network. Whether Project Genesis, as the network is called, succeeds or fails will determine the fate of one of Colorado’s largest public companies, and could weigh heavily on Denver’s future as a center of telecommunications innovation, a legacy that goes back decades to the early days of cable television. “Through DISH’s efforts, Denver is becoming a wireless hub,” said John Swieringa, president and chief operating officer of DISH Wireless. “Our partners are coming here, too, and investing in people and resources in this market. We expect Denver to become a leader in 5G.” DISH Wireless has hired more than 1,600 workers in the past 18 months and is looking to add 500 more, Swieringa said. DISH, the parent company, already employs 6,000 people along the Front Range. A … [Read more...] about From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
Dish Network’s new ad campaign wants to hear customers’ comments, complaints
Dish Network admits it. TV service providers — itself included — have plenty of room to improve their customer service reputation. On Monday, the Douglas County company begins a customer listening campaign, which includes a “spokeslistener” who stars in TV commercials and an advertising campaign. The company will also roll out a new feature on its web pages to gather comments and complaints from customers. “We’re in an industry that’s not known for listening to customers. But the easiest way to find out what customers want is to listen to them,” chief marketing officer Jay Roth said. “We have a saying here that the most powerful tool we have is our ears.” While gimmicky, Dish says this is a way to point out what the satellite TV company has been working on and try to win back customers and attract new ones. Many cable and satellite TV services are struggling to stop the subscriber shrinkage. But it could be a long battle. Cable and satellite TV companies continue to have … [Read more...] about Dish Network’s new ad campaign wants to hear customers’ comments, complaints
5 Hydrogen Stocks to Watch
Hydrogen is an energy source that emits zero greenhouse gases when burned. The only waste product is water vapor. That makes it a cleaner alternative energy source than fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and coal. The drawback to hydrogen as a fuel source is that we rarely find it in a gaseous form. And although we can produce hydrogen from a variety of sources, some of those methods emit greenhouse gases. On top of that, we don't yet make it at the scale needed to be economically competitive with fossil fuels. However, that could change in the coming years. Several companies are working hard to tap into the enormous potential for this potentially emission-free fuel. Here's a look at some of the leading hydrogen stocks. Image source: Getty Images. What to know about investing in hydrogen There are several ways to produce hydrogen. Some methods result in the production of carbon dioxide as a byproduct. The industry labels these forms "blue hydrogen." Using … [Read more...] about 5 Hydrogen Stocks to Watch
Roe V. Wade Overturned: The Ultimate Explainer On What It Means
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Supreme Court on Friday overturned the nationwide right to abortion in its landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling, causing major uncertainty about the future of abortion access in the United States. Here are answers to some of the biggest questions: What did the Supreme Court’s ruling say? In a decision by Justice Samuel Alito, the court upheld a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A majority of justices also voted to strike down Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), effectively ruling abortion is no longer a nationwide right and giving states the power to ban the procedure. Alito called Roe v. Wade “an abuse of judicial authority” that relied on “egregiously wrong” reasoning, and argued the right to abortion is not expressly mentioned in the Constitution and isn’t “deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition.” Four other conservative … [Read more...] about Roe V. In merger-friendly GOP administration, Dish’s Ergen gets chance to play kingmaker
It’s fitting that Dish Network Corp. Chairman Charlie Ergen is set to speak to Wall Street just as the wireless industry’s merger moratorium is lifted. His company’s massive stockpile of airwaves figures heavily in the speculation over who will buy whom. Douglas County-based Dish reports earnings Monday, just days after the end of a government-imposed quiet period related to a federal sale of wireless spectrum. In that auction and other deals over the past decade, Ergen’s satellite-TV company compiled $34.7 billion worth of nation-blanketing airwaves. Ergen kept buying spectrum even after an effort to merge with Sprint Corp. fizzled a few years ago, and investors have been trying to figure out his endgame ever since. Now, with a merger-friendly Republican administration in place, Ergen has a chance to finally do something with all those assets — if the notoriously prickly billionaire can find a willing partner, perhaps in T-Mobile US, Verizon Communications or Comcast. The … [Read more...] about In merger-friendly GOP administration, Dish’s Ergen gets chance to play kingmaker
Dish’s new pick-your-own TV channels plan starts at $30
You sign up for a TV deal. Your bill skyrockets after the deal ends. You call and complain. Cable and satellite TV customers know the drill. Playing that game is the second biggest complaint Dish Network gets from customers. The first? Paying for too many channels they don’t watch. “I think we reached a tipping point,” said Warren Schlichting, Dish’s executive vice president of marketing, programming and media sales. “The consumer’s appetite has changed for having hundreds of channels. If you take a step back, you’ll see programmers and distributors (like Dish) have incentive to grow the pay TV industry. And we better find a way to meet consumer demand or people are going to watch Netflix all day.” On Thursday, the Douglas County satellite TV provider, reeling from its largest loss of quarterly subscribers ever, introduced a novel approach to address both issues. The Flex Plan offers 50 popular channels — including Food Network, CNN and USA — but no local networks for … [Read more...] about Dish’s new pick-your-own TV channels plan starts at $30
Colorado’s Level 3 Communications is no more, as CenturyLink closes $30B purchase
When Monica Walton walked into her Broomfield office at Level 3 Communications on Wednesday morning, she already felt nostalgic. “I came in and the sign has been changed on our campus,” said Walton, who has worked for Level 3 for 12 years and on Wednesday became CenturyLink’s general manager for Colorado. “This is happening globally, though not immediately everywhere. There are still a number of Level 3 buildings in Denver with Level 3 signage. That’s the first step of combining the companies.” Wednesday marked “ Day One ” of Monroe, La.-based CenturyLink’s purchase of debt-laden Level 3, one of Colorado’s largest companies and owner of one of the world’s largest internet networks. The deal, valued at $30 billion, is more like a merger, giving CenturyLink shareholders 51 percent ownership and Level 3 stockholders 49 percent. Level 3 CEO Jeff Storey becomes president of CenturyLink and will take over as the leader when CenturyLink CEO Glen F. Post III retires Jan. 1, 2019. But … [Read more...] about Colorado’s Level 3 Communications is no more, as CenturyLink closes $30B purchase
UK, US, Japan, Canada to ban Russia gold imports
- A + A LONDON (June 26): Britain, the United States, Japan, and Canada will ban new imports of Russian gold as part of efforts to tighten the sanctions squeeze on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, the British government said on Sunday. The ban will come into force shortly and apply to newly mined or refined gold, the government statement said ahead of a meeting of Group of Seven leaders in Germany on Sunday. The move will not affect previously exported Russian-origin gold, it added. Russian gold exports were worth £12.6 billion (US$15.45 billion) last year and wealthy Russians have recently been buying bullion to reduce the financial impact of Western sanctions, the government said. "The measures we have announced today will directly hit Russian oligarchs and strike at the heart of Putin's war machine," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in the statement. "We need to starve the Putin regime of its funding. The UK and our allies are doing just that." The … [Read more...] about UK, US, Japan, Canada to ban Russia gold imports
Johnson: Cost of Russian victory in Ukraine is too high
Boris Johnson - A + A SCHLOSS ELMAU (June 26): World leaders must recognise the price of supporting Ukraine including the surge in energy and food costs but must also acknowledge that the price of allowing Russia to win would be far higher, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. Speaking at the start of a Group of Seven summit on Sunday, Johnson said the West needs to maintain its unity in the face of Moscow's aggression. "In order to protect that unity, in order to make it work, you've got to have really, really honest discussions about the implications of what's going on, the pressures that individual friends and partners are feeling," he told reporters. "But the price of backing down, the price of allowing [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to succeed, to hack off huge parts of Ukraine, to continue with his programme of conquest, that price will be far, far higher. Everybody here understands that." Read also: Russian missiles shake Kyiv as world … [Read more...] about Johnson: Cost of Russian victory in Ukraine is too high
