$18.5 Billion In Student Loan Forgiveness From Biden Department Of Education, Is More Coming?

May 17, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While the debate continues about whether to implement broad student loan forgiveness, the Department of Education (ED) has embraced using its existing powers to forgive student loans for borrowers defrauded by their colleges. The latest round of forgiveness is for borrowers who attended the now-defunct Marinello beauty schools . Marinello failed to provide the education promised to students, including leaving students to self-teach without instructors for weeks at a time. The schools also lied about the earnings graduates could expect after graduation and falsified high school graduation records for students who would not have been eligible for federal student loans without proof they had completed high school. The loans of former Marinello students and those who attended other institutions that lied to students about the education they would receive were forgiven using a program known as Borrower Defense. The criminal fraud case of Elizabeth Holmes’ former second-in-command heads to jury

June 24, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN Business) The criminal fraud trial of Elizabeth Holmes' ex-boyfriend and former second-in-command at Theranos is heading to the jury, roughly three months after it kicked off in the same San Jose, California, courthouse where she was found guilty on four charges of defrauding investors. In closing arguments, which began Tuesday and spanned nearly four days, the prosecution sought to highlight the many ways in which it alleges former Theranos COO and president Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani directly helped defraud investors and patients alongside Holmes over the course of several years. Prosecutors pointed to various emails, text messages and witness testimony reviewed during the trial that highlighted Balwani's integral roles at the company and his intimate knowledge of the startup's failings. The defense, meanwhile, argued the government had cherry-picked information and lacked sufficient evidence to prove its case. It ticked off the many high-profile people who, like Balwani, … [Read more...] about The criminal fraud case of Elizabeth Holmes’ former second-in-command heads to jury

Since Title IX there have been significant strides for women, including recent achievements like the overall college enrollment rate for 18- to 24-year-olds being higher for women than for men since 2000. The intentions of Title IX are noble and there should be no doubt that this law has made an indelible mark on generations of women and girls. At the same time, we must also reflect on whether Title IX is fulfilling its promise of protecting women from discrimination and underrepresentation in their educational and … [Read more...] about Title IX At 50: Are Women And Girls Being Treated Equally?

Supreme Court Nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett A Jurist For All Rights

September 29, 2020 by dailycaller.com

By Larry Keane President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett is again delivering on his promise to return the judiciary to jurists who will faithfully interpret law as it is written. The president delivered on his original campaign promise to nominate justices to the U.S. Supreme Court “in the mold of Justice Scalia.” “Amy Coney Barrett will decide cases based on the text of the Constitution as written,” President Trump said of his nominee in the White House Rose Garden. “As Amy has said being a judge takes courage, you are not there to decide cases as you may prefer. You are there to do your duty and to follow the law wherever it may take you. That is exactly what Judge Barrett will do on the U.S. Supreme Court.” President Trump broke campaign precedent in 2016 when he released his original list of 11 possible nominees he said he would consider to fill a Supreme Court vacancy. He added 10 additional names just months later, cementing his commitment to … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett A Jurist For All Rights

Wall St rallies as traders dial back rate-hike bets

June 25, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (June 24): Wall Street's main indexes climbed more than 2% on Friday, as signs of slowing economic growth and a recent weakening of commodity prices tempered expectations over how high the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates to rein in inflation. Global financial markets have been roiled this month on worries that rapid rate hikes by major central banks could cause a recession, with the benchmark S&P 500 confirming a bear market last week as it recorded a 20% drop from its January closing peak. The three main indexes looked set to notch their first weekly gain of the month, boosted by megacap growth stocks and defensive sectors such as healthcare and utilities seen as safer bets during times of economic uncertainty. "The reality is there's some optimism that the weakening economy, the stronger potential for a recession down the road could actually impede the Fed's aggressive hiking schedule," said Ryan Detrick, chief market … [Read more...] about Wall St rallies as traders dial back rate-hike bets
