August 10, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Tan Sri Shahrir Ab Samad (The Edge filepix by Zahid Izzani) - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): The High Court here on Tuesday (Aug 9) heard that Taman Kebun Teh UMNO branch in Johor had received a cheque worth RM10,000 from former Felda chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Ab Samad for the expenses of a football tournament, nine years ago. Its deputy chief Abu Bakar Abd Aziz, 72, said the donation was deposited into the Maybank Islamic account, which is the official account of the branch, on Dec 10, 2013. "On Dec 13, 2013, a cheque worth RM7,000 was issued to Mohamad Danial Zainal Abidin who is the Taman Kebun Teh UMNO Youth chief for the expenses of the YB Tan Sri Shahrir Hj Ab Samad Football Tournament," Abu Bakar said, adding that he had applied for the donation himself because Shahrir is the Johor Bahru UMNO division chief. In crowded city races, Denver’s new fair election fund will face first test

August 9, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

Overhauling Denver’s campaign finance rules was popular with voters in 2018. More than 70% of Denverites who cast ballots that year voted for Referred Measure 2E. The sweeping change to the city’s campaign rules ratcheted down contribution limits for candidates seeking every seat from mayor to the city auditor, banned direct corporate and union campaign contributions and established a fair elections fund to provide public financing for candidates who agreed to abide by even lower contribution limits and other rules. Participate in the fair elections fund and receive a 9-to-1 public funding match on contributions from Denver residents between $5 and $50. In other words, a $50 donation becomes $500 with taxpayer money so long as the donor hails from the city and county. A lot has happened since then. First, the measure’s backers struck a deal with the City Council to delay the law’s effective date until after the 2019 municipal election instead of trying to enact the changes … [Read more...] about In crowded city races, Denver’s new fair election fund will face first test

Leaving a lasting legacy: Cherie Gil more than just an iconic ‘contravida’

August 10, 2022 by entertainment.inquirer.net

Cherie Gil There was a point in Cherie Gil’s illustrious career when she questioned herself if there was anything else she could leave behind in the industry aside from her “famous line” about second-rate, trying-hard copycats. But as heartfelt tributes for the beloved actress poured in on social media—shortly after news broke that she died from cancer last Aug. 5—it became unquestionably clear that Cherie’s legacy goes beyond the iconic “contravida” roles she played, or any other performances she gave on television, film and stage. For her family, loved ones and the people fortunate enough to have worked with her on- and offscreen, Cherie was more than a versatile talent: She was also a friend, a sister, a mentor, a second mother. For her niece Max Eigenmann, Cherie was the one person she turned to when she was feeling down. “She always knew what to do to make me feel better,” she said, reminiscing about the intimate conversations they had during their yoga sessions or as … [Read more...] about Leaving a lasting legacy: Cherie Gil more than just an iconic ‘contravida’

Suspense over Jardine’s third attempt at CCB privatisation

August 9, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 1, 2022 - August 07, 2022. - A + A WILL it be third time’s the charm for Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd, which launched yet another unconditional takeover offer for Cycle & Carriage Bintang Bhd (CCB) on July 14? Jardine’s bid to acquire the rest of the shares in CCB that it does not already own — at an offer price of RM2.70 per share — marks its third attempt at making CCB a fully owned subsidiary. As with the first two exercises, the current offer is expected to fall short, because even though it is higher than the previous offers of RM2.20 per share followed by another at RM2.40, it is still far from the RM4.65 enterprise value (EV) that the main dissenting shareholder Datuk David Goh contends it is worth. In an exclusive interview with The Edge in July last year, Goh said that the underlying value of CCB — one of the largest Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the country — was at … [Read more...] about Suspense over Jardine’s third attempt at CCB privatisation

Joe Biden Shifts To A Realistic Fracking Stance

September 19, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I have always viewed politicians that promise to ban hydraulic fracturing — commonly known as “fracking” — with some level of suspicion. In fact, a year ago as candidates were making these promises I explained Why A Ban On Fracking Will Never Happen . Those promises have always signaled one of three things to me. The Significance of Fracking First, the candidate may not understand the significance of fracking to U.S. oil and gas production. So let’s review that significance. Fracking has actually been around since the late 1940s and has been used extensively to promote higher production rates from oil and gas wells. Fracking involves pumping water, chemicals and typically sand down an oil or gas well under high pressure to break open channels (fractures) in the reservoir rock trapping the deposit. Oil and gas do not travel easily through these shale formations, which is why they need to be fractured. The … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Shifts To A Realistic Fracking Stance

U.S. Natural Gas Electricity Efficiency is Always Improving

April 10, 2016 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin El Segundo Energy Center, a 560-MW combined cycle power plant in southern California. Source: ... [+] Combined Cycle Journal For electricity, the lifeblood of our modern world , efficiency has been installed as the 1st choice to reduce energy usage and related GHG emissions. Although renewables are ranked 2nd in this critical "loading order," 3rd ranked natural gas often gets deployed 1st because of greater availability and reliability. This demonstrates why since California first installed its Renewable Portfolio Standard in 2003, natural gas' share in the power generation mix has actually risen from 47% then to 61% today. Thanks to its clean burning, predictable, and flexible nature, natural gas has become an increasingly attractive fuel, boosted by a production boom and lower prices. Evolving technologies will continue to allow gas to play an expanding role in the clean generation of electricity. … [Read more...] about U.S. Natural Gas Electricity Efficiency is Always Improving
