Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Marvel and Walt Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned another $31.6 million (-50%) in its third domestic weekend, bringing its 17-day total to $342.1 million. That puts it above a deluge of recent big-deal superhero movies (sans inflation), including Thor: Ragnarök ($315 million), Iron Man ($318 million), Deadpool 2 ($324 million), Guardians of the Galaxy ($333 million), Aquaman ($334 million), Joker ($335 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($336 million). It’s going to still end up becoming the least leggy MCU movie ever, behind even Captain America: Civil War ($408 million from a $179 million debut) and Black Widow ($183 million/$80 million, Disney+ Premiere Access availability aside. Nonetheless, I’d partially chalk that up to the deluge of fans who showed up on opening weekend expecting a mythology episode. You had the “got to see the big event flick” audience in the first three days, … [Read more...] about Box Office: ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Tops $800 Million As ‘Everything, Everywhere’ Sets New A24 Record

Box Office: ‘Uncharted’ Passes $400 Million As ‘Sonic 2’ Tops $375 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In holdover news that isn’t about Everything, Everywhere All at Once (which passed $52 million yesterday and will become A24’s biggest domestic earner) and Walt Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($342 million domestic and $803 million worldwide) ... Sony’s Uncharted finally crawled past $400 million worldwide this weekend. The $120 million Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg video game adaptation has earned $147.5 million domestic, third among video game movies behind only Sonic the Hedgehog ($148 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($181 million and counting). Its global total puts it, among video game movies, behind Rampage ($428 million), Detective Pikachu ($433 million) and Warcraft ($438 million). So, yes, mixed-negative reviews aside, it’s a clear-cut hit and I’d be shocked not to see a sequel in the next few years. Maybe Uncharted 2 can let Holland act his age. Meanwhile, DreamWorks and … [Read more...] about Box Office: ‘Uncharted’ Passes $400 Million As ‘Sonic 2’ Tops $375 Million
Weekend Box Office: ‘Downton Abbey 2’ Nabs Okay $16 Million Weekend
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As noted yesterday, Focus Features’ Downton Abbey: A New Era was seen as a definitive test case as to whether older audiences would return to theaters after a year-end spree of ignoring the likes of The Last Duel, West Side Story, King Richard and essentially anything other than House of Gucci . Granted, movies like The Batman and Spider-Man: No Way Home don’t get to $369 million and $804 million without some help from the “sorry to inform you but you’re old now” demographics. However, that’s not helpful for movies specifically aimed at me and/or my parents. With a release in 3,820 theaters, Focus Features’ widest release ever, the period piece sequel earned $16 million in its domestic debut. That gives the Michelle Dockery/Maggie Smith/Hugh Bonneville flick a $52 million global total. So, yeah, a measured win for us geezers. Even compared to the first film’s $33 million domestic debut, I’d call that business as … [Read more...] about Weekend Box Office: ‘Downton Abbey 2’ Nabs Okay $16 Million Weekend

(Photo by Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters) - A + A TOKYO/BEIJING/WASHINGTON (May 22): President Joe Biden arrived in Japan on Sunday to launch a plan for greater US economic engagement with the Indo-Pacific, facing criticism even before the programme is announced that it will offer scant benefit to countries in the region. On the second leg of his first Asia trip as president, Biden is to meet with leaders of Japan, India and Australia, the "Quad", another cornerstone of his strategy to push back against China's expanding influence. Biden meet with Japanese business leaders, including the president of Toyota Motor Corp 7203.T, at the ambassador's residence in Tokyo shortly after arriving, said a person familiar with the matter. On Monday, he is to call on Emperor Naruhito … [Read more...] about Biden in Japan to launch regional economic plan to counter Beijing
SEA Games: Chot Reyes takes blame for Gilas’ failed gold medal bid
Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes in the 31st SEA Games. SEA GAMES POOL MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes took the fall for the national team’s botched gold medal bid in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam on Sunday. The Philippines, deemed as an immovable dynasty in the region, was knocked off its lofty perch by an emerging Indonesian side, 85-81. “Our players played their best,” said Reyes, who was tapped to replace Tab Baldwin in an unexpected shakeup last February. “Indonesia came with a very good game plan. They shot well from the three-point line. In the end, we just couldn’t match it.” “Obviously that’s on me. I take full accountability and responsibility for the result. Like I said, they tried their best and that’s sports. That’s life. Sometimes, things don’t work out the way we played,” he added. PBA stars Matthew Wright and June Mar Fajardo led the way with 23 and 20 points, respectively but Gilas’ offensive woes coupled … [Read more...] about SEA Games: Chot Reyes takes blame for Gilas’ failed gold medal bid
6 short films make it to 2022 QCinema film fest
Austin Tan, director of “Ngatta Naddaki y Nuang?” (Why did the Carabao cross the Carayan?) This year’s winning short films examine cinema and interrogate space created, recreated and destroyed through it,” said filmmaker Ed Lejano as he described the lineup of the 10th edition of QCinema International Film Festival that will run in November. Six shorts were chosen from close to 160 entries after a difficult screening process. Each filmmaker received a grant of P350,000, added Lejano, who is also festival director. “A refreshingly diverse program of themes and styles are in store for all viewers in QCinema’s 10th year,” Lejano said in a statement sent to Inquirer Entertainment. “Its roster covers a range of concerns—from a reflexive attempt to save a silent film reel, an introspective search for meaning by an online sex worker, contrasting issues of migration both set in Cagayan Valley, to a psychological journey in a Quezon forest, and to a surreal one set amidst the backdrop of … [Read more...] about 6 short films make it to 2022 QCinema film fest
GoPro HERO 10 Is A Sleek Modern-Day Handycam
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Since our kids have grown up, I admittedly don’t take a lot of video anymore. Mostly because my wife and I can be only so entertaining on camera by ourselves. So any video I capture these days is an on-the-spot thought and through the lens of my smartphone. The quality is acceptable but really flat. Yet there are always things I see that I want to capture. And for the past few years – instead of photographing something directly – I’ve often taken video instead and then gone through frame-by-frame to pick the best image to use as a photo. But the quality is often degraded, when I do that. Not anymore. I’ve gotten hold of the GoPro HERO10 Black Creator Edition – billed as an all-in-one content capturing powerhouse that makes vlogging, filmmaking and live streaming easier than ever. This system features pro-quality 5.3K video, Emmy award-winning HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization, enhanced audio, LED lighting and four hours … [Read more...] about GoPro HERO 10 Is A Sleek Modern-Day Handycam
