Envisioning The Future And Sustaining A Legend At Sumida Farm
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What do you do when you are suddenly tasked with taking over the family farm? Locals know it as the farm with the little grass shack next to Pearlridge. Sumida Farm , a 95-year-old watercress farm on Oʻahu, that most locals toured in elementary school, is bordered by the retail stores, restaurants and parking lots of Pearlridge Center on three sides and a partially finished Honolulu Rail Transit Project, that hovers above busy Kamehameha highway on elevated tracks, on the fourth. The contrast between bright green rows of watercress against a backdrop of a shuttered Sears building with trains shooting through the sky for intermittent testing looks like something straight out of Blade Runner. How has a farm in the center of a shopping mall sustained four generations? Emi and Kyle Suzuki, who took over in March 2020, are figuring that out now, because with each generation a new iteration of the farm is born. … [Read more...] about Envisioning The Future And Sustaining A Legend At Sumida Farm

Japan says closely coordinating with BOJ, overseas authorities on banking issues
TOKYO – Japan’s government is closely coordinating with the Bank of Japan and financial authorities overseas to prevent fallout from the crisis of confidence engulfing banks in the West, Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Friday. Market turmoil in the wake of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank in the United States has also ensnared Credit Suisse and fueled fears of another global financial crisis. Japanese policymakers have so far stuck to the view that the possibility of another financial crisis is low. On Friday, Suzuki said he was closely watching financial markets in and outside of Japan and for any impact from problems in the banking sector in the West on the Japanese economy. “With the possibility of various risks in mind…the Financial Services Agency will closely coordinate with the Bank of Japan and financial authorities of other countries, while carefully watching the economy, financial markets and their effects on financial system,” … [Read more...] about Japan says closely coordinating with BOJ, overseas authorities on banking issues
Cactus League report: Cubs catchers’ big-picture approach to competitions — and Oscar Colás tries out center field for Sox
Cody Bellinger finally hit his first spring home run — at least the first one that counted. Bellinger’s homer last week against Team Canada is not applied to Cactus League totals because it was an exhibition matchup. His home run Thursday, though, prevented the Cubs from getting shut out in a 3-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Left-hander Drew Smyly went 4⅓ innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out four batters. Jameson Taillon threw 72 pitches in a minor-league game against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday after his sim game was rained out Wednesday. He surrendered four runs and seven hits, walked one and struck out seven in five innings. Sox manager Pedro Grifol saw some positives from the rain that canceled Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. “I didn’t plan the weather but when I saw it (in the forecast) a few days ago it was something that we thought would be good for us,” Grifol said Thursday. “Get another day (off), … [Read more...] about Cactus League report: Cubs catchers’ big-picture approach to competitions — and Oscar Colás tries out center field for Sox

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Not all sore throats are strep throat. In fact most aren't. Here's one throat infection that can be ... [+] mistaken for strep throat. (Photo: Shutterstock) You never want to see the words "gonorrhea" and "super" in the same sentence, such as "super, you have gonorrhea" or "gonorrhea is super." However, "super" gonorrhea is becoming an increasing reality around the world. Super gonorrhea is not the next DC Comics television show or movie, like Superman or Supergirl . It is a sexually transmitted bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, that is resistant to most if not all the antibiotics that we have available. Despite Critics And Detractors, World Baseball Classic Endures And Continues To Grow Sport
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the original brains behind the World Baseball Classic says he and the organizers of the global tournament never intended the event to be a one-and-done showcase of elite baseball talent. “This was not expected to be a one-off,” says Bob DuPuy, the former Major League Baseball president and chief operating officer. “(The 2006 WBC) was the inaugural version that would evolve as we learned about it, and learned what worked.” Now, almost two decades after the 2006 version — which ended with Japan winning the championship game against Cuba — the 2023 World Baseball Classic is generating plenty of excitement and patriotic fervor, not to mention renewed criticism. From Team TISI USA’s dramatic come-from-behind victory over Venezuela to propel the Americans into the ‘23 semifinals against Cuba, to the public outcry over injuries to stars like Edwin Diaz and Jose Altuve, there is no shortage of debate as to the … [Read more...] about Despite Critics And Detractors, World Baseball Classic Endures And Continues To Grow Sport
Next-Generation Luxury In The Indian Ocean: Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are many resorts in the Maldives. There is only one that has a James Turrell artwork. More specifically, the new Patina Maldives, Fari Islands has a pavilion envisioned by the American Turrell, who is known for his involvement in the late-20th-century Light and Space art movement. His most famous series is his Skyspace project, a collection of works that frame the night sky. Patina Maldives’ assistant director of marketing and communications, Zainab Hussain Shihab, says that many resort guests—who have traveled all over the world to see other Skyspaces, only to find them full of people—are overcome with emotion when they step all alone into the one-of-a-kind wooden artwork here. Privacy and exclusivity—being alone—are two of the Maldives’ tourism hallmarks. The majority of the islands’ 150 or so luxury resorts are each on a private island. (And when the natural ones all got taken, the developers started making … [Read more...] about Next-Generation Luxury In The Indian Ocean: Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
