Ford F-150 Electric Pickup Buyers Got Something They Weren’t Expecting. It’s a Very Clever Move
Early buyers of the new Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup truck found that their new vehicles come with a surprising accessory--an adapter for a Tesla charger. The adapter won't let the F-150 charge at Tesla Supercharger stations (although Tesla has promised to open these to other EVs soon). Instead, the adapter means Tesla drivers can charge their vehicle by plugging them into the F-150 Lightning . What the heck is going on here? It's the latest smart move in the very clever rollout of a product that is both brand-new and iconic at the same time. When Ford first announced that an F-150 EV was coming, it released a video in which a Ford engineer used a prototype to tow a freight train weighing more than a million pounds while a group of skeptical gas-powered F-150 owners looked on. Next, Ford announced a surprising feature called bidirectional charging. In a power outage, you could turn your lights back on by plugging your home into your truck. This could be a very useful … [Read more...] about Ford F-150 Electric Pickup Buyers Got Something They Weren’t Expecting. It’s a Very Clever Move

Private Equity Bonanza Moves ‘Down Market’ Amid Bear Market Jitters
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As sinking stocks and recession fears spur interest in alternatives, fund managers and retail marketplaces are chomping at the bit for ‘mass affluent’ investors. After years of private equity firms aggressively marketing themselves to high-net-worth investors and their financial advisors, the message seems to be breaking through. Facing a bear market and bleak economic outlook, marked by inflation, supply chain imbalances and a hawkish Federal Reserve, more RIAs and high-net-worth investors are warming up to alternative investment funds – such as private equity, hedge funds, venture capital and private debt strategies – in their search for yield, according to advisors and investment managers who spoke with Forbes . “I think [retail] appetite is increasing,” says Donald Calcagni, Chief Investment Officer at Mercer Advisors, which oversees roughly $42 billion of client assets. “There is a sense among investors, … [Read more...] about Private Equity Bonanza Moves ‘Down Market’ Amid Bear Market Jitters

Welcome To The Real Bear Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Stocks continued their descent last week, with the S&P 500 now well into bear market territory at -23% from the high. While most define bear markets as a decline of 20% from the high, some pullbacks just kiss that level or don’t result in widespread carnage across all sectors. What we saw last week certainly qualifies the current situation as a “real” bear market. First, the S&P 500 was down almost 11% during the previous two weeks. Secondly, all sectors participated in the sell-off. Whether it is “profit-taking” or “selling what you can rather than what you want to,” this indiscriminate liquidation is the hallmark of a bear market. For example, energy stocks, which had been almost impervious to the market weakness this year, declined 17% last week! That still leaves energy up 31% and the only sector in the green year-to-date. Utilities, which were only slightly lower before last week, underperformed the market over … [Read more...] about Welcome To The Real Bear Market
World’s bubbliest housing markets are flashing warning signs
- A + A HONG KONG (June 22): A world economy already contending with raging inflation, stock-market turmoil and a grueling war is facing yet another threat: the unraveling of a massive housing boom. As central banks around the globe rapidly increase interest rates, soaring borrowing costs mean people who were already stretching to buy property are finally reaching their limits. The effects are being seen in countries such as Canada, the US and New Zealand, where once-hot residential real estate markets have suddenly turned cold. It’s a sharp reversal from years of surging prices fueled by rock-bottom mortgage rates and government stimulus, along with a pandemic that popularized remote work and sent homebuyers on the hunt for bigger spaces. An analysis by Bloomberg Economics shows that 19 OECD countries have combined price-to-rent and home price-to-income ratios that are higher today than they were ahead of the 2008 financial crisis — an indication that prices have … [Read more...] about World’s bubbliest housing markets are flashing warning signs
Powell Says Fed Will Continue Hiking Rates Until There Is ‘Compelling Evidence’ That Inflation Is Slowing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell pledged in testimony before Congress on Wednesday that the central bank is “moving expeditiously” to raise interest rates and remains “strongly committed” to doing so until there is “compelling evidence” that inflation is normalizing. Key Facts In his semiannual testimony on monetary policy to Congress, Powell faced questions from lawmakers about how the central bank will proceed as it looks to combat surging inflation, which remains at 41-year highs. The Fed raised rates by 75 basis points last week—its largest increase since 1994, with Powell also signaling that a similarly large rate hike is likely at the next policy meeting in July. Speaking to Congress on Wednesday, Powell pledged that the Fed wouldn’t hesitate to keep raising rates at a fast clip—and further than projected—if higher inflation continues to persist. “It is essential that we bring … [Read more...] about Powell Says Fed Will Continue Hiking Rates Until There Is ‘Compelling Evidence’ That Inflation Is Slowing
Bitcoin is leading indicator of stock-market bottom, Mobius says
- A + A (June 22): If you’re a stock trader, you should probably be turning your attention to cryptocurrencies right about now. That’s according to Mark Mobius, who co-founded Mobius Capital Partners after spending more than three decades at Franklin Templeton Investments. “Cryptocurrencies are a measure of investor sentiment,” he said in an interview Wednesday. “Bitcoin goes down, the next day the Dow Jones goes down. That’s the pattern you get. That shows that Bitcoin is a leading indicator.” Only when institutional and retail investors truly “throw in the towel” and stop putting more money into the market because of losses is when sentiment has hit rock bottom, he said. “That’s the time to start buying stocks.” Moves in Bitcoin and global stocks have become more positively correlated this year Worries about global recessionary risks have wiped out billions in Bitcoin’s market value, with the token crashing about 70% from its peak to trade near US$20,000. … [Read more...] about Bitcoin is leading indicator of stock-market bottom, Mobius says

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 22): The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM) will expedite the initiative to establish cooperation with ASEAN countries to expand the telecommunications and creative industry markets, said its Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa. He said he had mentioned in the post-Cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning that K-KOMM should start the initiative immediately by creating a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with all ASEAN countries, giving priority to bordering countries. “I would like to see an MoU that clearly explores this cooperation without having to wait for people to invite us, we need to be brave and come out from our cocoon. We have many things to offer in terms of cooperation with other countries in telecommunications and the creative industry including film,” he said.
