Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Some business leaders still believe imposed pressure, iron-fisted leadership and punitive criticism build the organization and the company’s bottom line. Plus, they think if leaders require employees to work longer and harder, the business gets a bigger bang for its buck. I spoke to a CEO of a major corporation who said he was glad his employees were not taking all their vacation days because it saved the company money. What he failed to see was his outdated practices don’t increase profits; they increase stress, which in turn undermines engagement and profitability; whereas, soft skills decrease stress and increase engagement and profits. The Lingering Myth Of Soft Versus Hard Skills A lingering myth links soft skills—such as compassion, trust, empathy, connection and kindfulness—with weakness and ineptness, stigmatizing them as irrelevant and less valuable than hard, technical skills. Experts say that tough business … [Read more...] about 5 Pivotal Soft Skills Essential For Success In Today’s Global Market

How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Day 3: Get to know the job market. This post is part of Forbes’ Career Challenge: Get Job-Search Ready In 15 Days . In 1987, Sallie Krawcheck secured a coveted job in investment banking on Wall Street. Shortly after she started, the 1987 crash followed. She found herself in a job she hated, in a cut-throat work culture she hated and in a time of crisis that exacerbated the problem. “I knew I didn't like investment banking. I didn't get it. I didn't enjoy it. I didn't love the work,” she said in an interview with Business Insider. In 1990, realizing this wasn’t the career she wanted, she started at Columbia Business School. Her goal in business school was to get out of financial services and switch to the media industry. According to plan, she landed a summer internship at Time, Inc. She was thrilled and excited at the prospect of working there full-time once the internship converted into a job. At the end of the … [Read more...] about How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market
January’s Job Report Allays Big Concerns About The Economy’s Future
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Labor Department’s January employment report was extremely strong by absolutely any standard. Don’t be distracted by the argument that “seasonal adjustments are misleading.” It’s true that several monthly jobs reports have been suspect over the past couple of years because COVID-related disruptions in normal hiring cycles affected the normally benign seasonal adjustment process. Those problems, though, happened near the beginning or end of the academic year and showed up almost entirely in school employment numbers. In contrast, January’s strong jobs growth was very much a “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” report. Here are four key takeaways: First , there are 517,000 more jobs than in December, and almost 5 million more jobs than a year ago. Almost 25 million more jobs than in the worst of the COVID shutdown and 2.7 million more jobs than before the pandemic started. Second , the U.S. is in its fourth … [Read more...] about January’s Job Report Allays Big Concerns About The Economy’s Future

A Revolutionary Move For A Better Future
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Harvard economist Raj Chetty is doing something remarkable, and it ought to be a model for how the government and the private sector can improve the lives of American citizens. His approach isn't political. It’s pragmatic . Even more admirable: he’s willing to face irksome facts about how inequality of opportunity is almost physically rooted in neighborhoods . It’s all about zip codes. You are who you are, economically and educationally, to a great degree because of where you live . Once you land in a zip code, it will launch you into new opportunities, or it will limit you. Where you’re going depends more than we want to admit on where you are right now. Chetty is the William A. Ackman Professor of Economics at Harvard. He focuses on economic inequality and social mobility: the ability of each generation of a family to enjoy a quality of life better than the previous one. Multiple studies have found that the U.S. is … [Read more...] about A Revolutionary Move For A Better Future
Does ChatGPT mean the end of ‘thought leaders’?
Over the past two days, I must have had 20 conversations with people anxious about the impacts of AI on their work and livelihoods. Of course, I might have been seeking out those conversations because, as an academic and contributor to several business publications, I am also anxious! Creators, artists, coaches, programmers, doctors, writers, experts, and thought leaders are grappling with the implications of generative AI such as ChatGPT , DALL-E , and other advanced AI products on their jobs, passions, and income. On the one hand, it may seem like a dream come true. You can benefit from AI helping you work faster. Perhaps, better. On the other hand: So does everyone else and their hamster. Especially since it seems that anyone can look like an expert and creator with the help of AI. It can, after all, write a job application good enough to be short-listed, pass portions of the U.S. medical licensing exam and the bar exam , produce code , text, and sellable art … [Read more...] about Does ChatGPT mean the end of ‘thought leaders’?

What To Consider If You’re Thinking About Selling Your Company
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Luke Battiloro is the founder of Vavoom Vodka, CEO of I Choose To Live, and a serial entrepreneur, neurohacker and genius brand creator. I have been approached by multiple investors interested in buying—or at the minimum, investing in—my brand Vavoom Vodka. “If you asked me a few years ago if I would have a company worth this much, I may have been hesitant to say yes,” I tell investors. Truth be told, this company has been my passion project. My goal was to empower women through the statuesque pose of the woman on the vodka bottle reaching overhead, which could be considered a power posture. While the overwhelming offers kept coming in, I had to think to myself, “Am I done with my dream of empowering women everywhere?” Here's how you can answer the question of whether it's time to sell your own business. Emotional And Psychological Signs I would say it's time to sell your company when you do not wake … [Read more...] about What To Consider If You’re Thinking About Selling Your Company
WeChat: China’s Other Trojan Horse
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Momentum is growing behind a bill in Congress to do what we’ve been arguing for in this column for close to two years, i.e. banning Chinese social media app TikTok. It’s the app that some term China’s “Trojan horse” for inserting Beijing’s control over U.S. user’s data and hearts and minds. At the same time, China’s other social media Trojan Horse, WeChat, and its parent company Tencent, have been getting a lot less attention. When the Trump administration banned TikTok from U.S. markets in 2020—a ban which a federal judge blocked and then the Biden administration reversed—the executive order included another Chinese social media app, WeChat. While not as psychologically menacing as the TikTok app with its invasive ByteDance algorithms, WeChat may pose an even greater danger from the angle that alarmed government officials from the very start, as an app that gives the Chinese government direct access to user data in the US. … [Read more...] about WeChat: China’s Other Trojan Horse
