- A + A HONG KONG (Aug 9): Asian shares eked out modest gains on Tuesday as buyers were held back by persistent global cost pressures, with investors turning their focus this week to US inflation data and the prospects for further aggressive Federal Reserve rate hikes. The unexpectedly strong US jobs data on Friday have raised the stakes for the July US consumer prices report due on Wednesday, especially for the Fed's policy outlook. "US stocks were struggling to hold on to gains, as the focus moves from a robust US labour market to the US CPI data out later this week," ANZ analysts said in a note. "The priority of reducing inflation to underpin the expansion in domestic demand and sustainable jobs growth will ring loud and clear from the 25-27 August Jackson Hole symposium." European markets were set for a lower open with the pan-region Euro Stoxx 50 futures down 0.16%, German DAX futures dropping 0.16% and FTSE futures falling 0.12%. China’s Realme closing in on market leaders Xiaomi, Samsung, yet hurdles loom in treacherous market where many stumbled. Photographer: Anindito Mukherjee/Bloomberg India seeks to restrict Chinese smartphone makers from selling devices cheaper than 12,000 rupees ($150) to kickstart its faltering domestic industry, dealing a blow to brands including Xiaomi Corp. The move is aimed at pushing Chinese giants out of the lower segment of the world’s second-biggest mobile market, according to people familiar with the matter. It coincides with mounting concern about high-volume brands like Realme and Transsion undercutting local manufacturers, they said, asking not to be identified discussing a sensitive matter. Exclusion from India’s entry-level market would hurt Xiaomi and its peers, which in recent years have increasingly relied on India to drive … [Read more...] about India seeks to oust China firms from under Rs 12,000 phone market

The No.1 thing that is more valuable than time or money
Illustration by Rachel Revilla No matter if your goal is to recover or grow, in these times of change and uncertainty, there is one thing more important to any business leader or business owner than time or money: your attention. We live in a “VUCA” world —a world of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. The pandemic has created a new global and national economic order with a very uneven distribution of winners and losers. On a global scale, the Russia-Ukrainian conflict has brought us many new uncertainties due to inflation, capital market changes, uncertain interest rates, high energy prices, localization, food insecurity, global supply chain disruptions and more. Some Filipino companies are more impacted by this conflict than they had been by the pandemic. Change on a global and national scale is now faster than ever before in history. Energy flows where attention goes As a business leader, you need to focus on opportunities because these will ultimately be … [Read more...] about The No.1 thing that is more valuable than time or money
Study: Housing Providers’ Rent Increases Often Don’t Match Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Perhaps one of the most iconic portrayals of a greedy landlord is Benoit from Puccini’s La Boehme . The character arrives on the scene at the opening of the play looking to collect rent and then proudly confesses infidelity to the poor artists he’s trying to shake down. They pretend to be outraged by his immorality, eject him, and use the rent money for a night on the town. The image of the poor but righteous tenants is so compelling a modern musical adaptation of the opera is called Rent . But are housing providers really trying to squeeze every last cent from their residents? A study from Berkeley indicates that often, housing providers leave money on the table, giving discounts and often failing to keep up with the market. The study, Affordable Housing Without Public Subsidies: Rent-Setting Practices in Small Rental Properties , takes a look at how housing providers set their rents and how those rents relate to … [Read more...] about Study: Housing Providers’ Rent Increases Often Don’t Match Market

Leadership is a continuous journey of personal development. (Representational image: Kobu Agency via Unsplash) Watching the quarterly results tumble out and surprise the market, I wonder if we are once again in that zone of uncertainty where we know less about our future than we think we do. I have always believed leadership is an art form best tested in uncertainty. Some will succeed while most will fail, and this is how you would know the difference between good and great. I have been through three cycles of uncertainty and have learnt through my mistakes. I believe the best way to navigate uncertainty is to become smart about the questions to ask. If the question is right, the answer is just a step away. So here are 7 questions I believe every business leader, team leader should be sitting down with his/her team and discussing: 1. NGL and mitú, Unite To Create A New Hispanic Media and Entertainment Powerhouse
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Over the years, we have been reporting that today’s Hispanic consumers are looking more than ever to connect with their heritage, seeking authentic Hispanic cultural stories. This creates a significant opportunity where creators and producers partner with brands to evolve the marketplace, moving from a content strategy that still relies on important assets from Mexico and Latin America to one that prioritizes ideas that are native to the U.S. Hispanic consumer, mainly representing their life between their Hispanic and Anglo cultures. Back in 2008, we at alma were pioneers in identifying this trend and called this group Fusionistas, consumers that fusion both cultures living as 100% Hispanics and 100% Americans, without feeling the need to trade off any aspect of their lives. Recently a new deal related to Hispanic content creation was announced, uniting two major industry players, NGL, co-founded by actor and activist … [Read more...] about NGL and mitú, Unite To Create A New Hispanic Media and Entertainment Powerhouse
Republicans confront unexpected online money slowdown
File image of Republican leader and former US president Donald Trump (Image: Reuters) Online fundraising has slowed across much of the Republican Party in recent months, an unusual pullback of small donors that has set off a mad rush among Republican political operatives to understand why — and reverse the sudden decline before it damages the party’s chances this fall. Small-dollar donations typically increase as an election nears. But just the opposite has happened in recent months across a wide range of Republican entities, including every major party committee and former President Donald Trump’s political operation. The total amount donated online fell more than 12% across all federal Republican campaigns and committees in the second quarter compared with the first quarter, according to an analysis of federal records from WinRed, the main online Republican donation-processing portal. More alarming for Republicans: Democratic contributions surged at the same time. Total … [Read more...] about Republicans confront unexpected online money slowdown
US’s policy of ‘strategic ambiguity’ on Taiwan could be tested, going forward
America’s attempt to keep China unsettled on the Taiwan issue with a proposed visit of Nancy Pelosi to the controversial island, has not gone according to the script. A strong response from China to counteract has forced the White House to pushback against the House Speaker’s plan. President Joe Biden said the US military thinks her visit was not a ‘good idea right now’, clearly trying to salvage the situation and diffuse the rising tension. In recent years Biden has pushed the US’ ‘strategic ambiguity’ on Taiwan a few times forcing observers to speculate whether his remarks were deliberate or a ‘gaffe.’ But each time it roiled China and strained not only Sino-American relations but also worsened China and Taiwan ties. Pelosi and her delegation are scheduled to visit a number of countries in August including Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Hawaii, headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific command. But her visit to Taiwan was not officially announced, ostensibly because of … [Read more...] about US’s policy of ‘strategic ambiguity’ on Taiwan could be tested, going forward
