Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What happens after you’ve had a long and successful corporate career? Here’s a predictable response: Join a board, relocate to a warm climate, play some golf. Not a bad way to live, and the combination may be perfect for some. But for others, after years in senior leadership, it can be tough to picture what’s next. Combine the lack of clarity with stress and uncertainty that can come with change, and it’s easy to see why some leaders delay making a move. That’s because the idea of stepping away from an executive role comes with a dark side , where life can feel directionless, and there’s a struggle to let go. Harvard professor Arthur Brooks calls this the striver’s curse , where some of the highest achievers and most successful people feel the least happy as they age, retire, or move on from their leadership roles. The good news is that this isn’t true for everyone, including Mary Draves, former Chief Sustainability … [Read more...] about 5 Key Mindsets For A Thriving Life After Corporate from Mary Draves, Former Chief Sustainability Officer

Three Steps To Build The Future Of Nature
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Don’t Rescue It – Design And Engineer It Through Experimentation At Scale The future has a way of sneaking up on you if you don’t have an open mind. Ten years ago, my colleague Peter Kareiva was talking about genetically engineering meat – and I thought, “That’s never going to happen in my lifetime.” And now look where we are . So what’s the future of nature? Many people answer this question by immediately assuming the worst – that human activity (led by climate change) is likely to destroy nature and all of us who depend on it. We need to pose the question as a prompt to creative thinking instead of despair. Only an open, innovative mindset will allow us to seize all the opportunities now before us. And that openness starts with being open about what nature itself is and can be. Step One: Accept That We Are Experimenting with Nature at Big Scales, and Do So Intentionally The first step in thinking … [Read more...] about Three Steps To Build The Future Of Nature
The Political Logic Of Willow Project’s Approval
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2020, Candidate Biden pledged not to allow drilling on public lands and waters. In 2021, President Biden announced a target of reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% by 2030 with 2005 as the baseline. But in 2023, President Biden approved ConocoPhillips’ Willow project for oil drilling on a federally-managed reserve on Alaska’s North Slope. The timing of this approval was terrible. Earlier this week, the IPCC synthesis report painted a grim picture about the possibility of limiting temperature increase to 1.5 °C, the desired target of the 2016 Paris Agreement. The 1.5 °C goal requires that the world slashes greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 and achieves net zero emissions by 2050. However, global emissions rose in 2022 . Investments in new fossil fuel capacity also continue. In 2022, China , the top global emitter, permitted 106 GW of new coal power projects, akin to two large coal power plants per … [Read more...] about The Political Logic Of Willow Project’s Approval
Unlocking A Trend: Victorian Symbolism And 1980s Punk Continue To Inspire Hardware For Jewelry
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Locks and padlocks have been witnessing a renaissance in jewelry, borrowing inspiration from both Victorian symbolism and 1980s punk-inspired hardware. Independent designers are influenced by the more romantic spirit of the 19th century, while legendary jewelers such as Tiffany & Co. and fashion houses such as Vuitton and Hermes are reimagining their original designs. Tiffany & Co. modern ‘Hardwear’ collection Historically, the padlock in jewelry dates back to the 19th century, featuring intricate and often coded messages and motifs. During this period, bracelets and necklaces were traditionally given when a man had to travel. The locks were secured with a key upon his departure and unlocked upon his return. Allusions to chastity and fidelity were also part of the symbolism, but today, we recognize these jewels as tokens of affection and passion. Watch For These 5 Toxic Culture Red Flags During The Interview Process
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Let’s face it—a job interview is all about selling. The candidate is “selling” their skills and talent. The interviewer is “selling” their organization as a great place to work, but no workplace is perfect, and more and more, candidates are searching for the best culture fit. The challenge though is figuring out the truth about workplace culture before saying yes. Powerhouse review sites like Glassdoor have developed entire business models around helping candidates do just that, but perhaps candidates can play a more active role in uncovering the company’s true cultural identity instead of leaving it purely to outside sources or even worse….fate. While we typically think of the interview focusing on candidate evaluation, the process offers an invaluable opportunity to evaluate the company as well, and candidates preoccupied with simply impressing the interviewer like an awkward high schooler desperate to be asked to … [Read more...] about Watch For These 5 Toxic Culture Red Flags During The Interview Process
Strong cast, familiar tropes give “Champions” winning formula
The Farrelly brothers — Peter and Bobby — reigned supreme over comedies of questionable taste in the 1990s and 2000s (“Dumb and Dumber,” “There’s Something About Mary,” “Shallow Hal,” “Stuck on You”), but while brother Peter has gone on to the industry’s highest success, picking up best original screenplay and best picture Oscars for his film “Green Book,” Bobby hasn’t directed a film in awhile.
