By TASSANEE VEJPONGSA and DAVID RISING BANGKOK (AP) — A former police officer facing a drug charge burst into a day care center Thursday in Thailand, killing dozens of preschoolers and teachers and then shooting more people as he fled. At least 36 people were slain in the deadliest rampage in the nation’s history. The assailant, who was fired earlier this year, took his own life after killing his wife and child at home. Photos taken by first responders showed the school’s floor littered with the tiny bodies of children still on their blankets, where they had been taking an afternoon nap. The images showed slashes to their faces and gunshots to their heads and pools of blood. A teacher told ThaiPBS public broadcaster that the assailant got out of a car and immediately shot a man eating lunch outside, then fired more shots. When the attacker paused to reload, the teacher had an opportunity to run inside. “I ran to the back, the children were asleep,” said the young woman, … [Read more...] about Former cop attacks Thai day care center, kills at least 36

Quantum Charged Coupled Device There are two common ion traps, linear traps and quantum charged-coupled device (QCCD). The linear trap is exactly what it sounds like – a long chain of ion qubits contained in a single trapping zone. Great leadership can make a measurable difference in a company's success -- especially when it follows mediocre leadership. This comes to mind in considering what has happened at Microsoft since January 2014 when Satya Nadella took over as CEO. Since then, the company's stock market value has soared 143% to $712 billion. To be sure, Microsoft revenue has accelerated recently as it maintained its high profitability. Over the last five years, its revenue grew at a 4.1% annual rate while it ended 2017 with a net profit margin of nearly 24%. But in its most recent earnings report, revenue growth was almost three times faster -- 12%. What's more, despite tepid growth in its PC business -- up a mere 2% -- the good news is that Microsoft has been able to achieve much faster growth in other products. For example, its revenues in its Productivity and Business Processes segment-- including Office, Dynamics and LinkedIn were up 25%; Intelligent Cloud -- Windows Server and SQL Server … [Read more...] about Successful Leadership Turbocharged Microsoft’s Value by $430 Billion
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Remember when that Scottish rock band Simple Minds sang “Don't You Forget About Me?” Well, the concern right now is that all of this Covid-19 stuff may have helped too many Americans forget about the flu and how bad it can be. A survey of 1,005 adults in the U.S. conducted in mid-August and commissioned by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) found that only 49% planned on actually getting the vaccine this Fall. And 20% of those not planning on getting vaccinated actually did not even think of influenza as a serious illness, which is kind of like believing that cinder blocks falling from the sky is not a serious problem. That’s why a key recurring message from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and NFID experts at Tuesday’s 2022 Annual Influenza and Pneumococcal Disease News Conference held by the NFID at Bethesda, Maryland, was to not forget about the flu, to take the flu seriously, and to get … [Read more...] about Influenza Survey: Only 49% Of U.S. Adults Plan On Getting Vaccine, 58% May Mask

While everyone hopes to have a long and productive life, we all know that this often depends on factors out of our direct control, such as genetics, life circumstances, health issues, and the prospect of the unexpected. We all expected to help celebrate Betty White's one-hundredth birthday this January only to see her die just weeks short of the mark due to medical complications from a stroke. Still, for the most part, the average life expectancy for most people In industrialized societies has risen steadily over the course of the last century. And this upward trend is likely to continue, albeit with some fits and starts along the way as pandemics and other medical crises occur. In an i ntriguing study published in 2017 , researchers examined the role of the failure mindset in human longevity. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Uber's former head of security, Joe Sullivan, was found guilty of obstructing an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission into Uber's security practices on Wednesday. He was also charged with hiding a 2016 data breach from authorities. This serious offense could have far-reaching implications for other Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs)- especially on the outsourced fractional/virtual CISO business model. On November 3, 2016, Sullivan was made aware of a data breach that had occurred at Uber. A hacker had gained access to the personal information of 57 million Uber users, including their names, email addresses, and phone numbers. Rather than reporting the breach to the authorities, Sullivan hid it. He then paid the hacker $100,000 to destroy the evidence and keep quiet about what had happened. This cover-up eventually came to light, and Sullivan was charged with obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
