Paul Moller stands in the back corner of a large garage in Davis, California, clean-shaven and wearing a large pair of golden aviator glasses. The 52-year-old engineer is a professor down the road at the University of California, Davis, but he’s not the type to sit back with a book and highlighter. In his white polo shirt and glossy brown bomber jacket, he looks ready to tinker with the shiny invention behind him at knee-level at a moment’s notice. advertisement advertisement The dark blue saucer behind Moller features eight propellers encircling a small, one-person cockpit. Behold Moller’s new M200X—a vehicle reminiscent of the Jetson family’s green flying car that Moller says is almost ready for manned test flights. Cut to: Moller stands outside with the M200X in an open grassy field. The vehicle, tethered to a rope, powers up, whirring loudly. REUTERS/Issei Kato/File photo TOKYO – More large Japanese companies are now raising wages to attract workers and cope with chronic staff shortages, a monthly Reuters poll showed on Thursday, a tentative sign Japan Inc may be slowly addressing pay that has been flat for decades. Still, the Corporate Survey found that higher wages aren’t yet the go-to tactic for companies, with digitalization seen as the most popular among the multiple measures firms say they are using to address the labor crunch. Greensboro Airport Gets Boom Supersonic, Needs Boston Logan
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Stuck between two major airports, one the world’s third largest single-airline hub and the other a flourishing operation with ten competing airlines, Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C. ,has long had a tough road to hoe. Last month, Denver-based Boom Supersonic, which wants to build a supersonic passenger jet called the Overture, selected Piedmont Triad as the site for a $500 million production facility. As a passenger airport, PTI reached a peak in 1994, when Continental Lite drew bargain hunters who might have used either Charlotte Douglas International Airport or Raleigh Durham International Airport. Each is about 80 miles away. In 1994, airport traffic reached about 4 million passengers, a level it approached in 2019. But Cal Lite folded in 1995. As a cargo airport, Piedmont Triad has had better luck. In 1998, it was chosen by FedEx to be the overnight carrier’s Mid-Atlantic hub, beating … [Read more...] about Greensboro Airport Gets Boom Supersonic, Needs Boston Logan
