Robbie Knievel Dies After Pancreatic Cancer Battle, Yet Anti-Vaxxers Blame Covid-19 Vaccines

January 14, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Daredevil stunt performer Robbie Knievel died on early Friday morning at the age of 60. He was in a hospice in Reno, Nevada, battling pancreatic cancer, which accounts for approximately 3% of all cancers but around 7% of all cancer deaths in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society . The diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is often delayed because the pancreas is tucked deep inside your abdomen where you can’t see it on selfies. Therefore, the sad news of Knievel’s passing is an opportunity to raise more awareness of this awful cancer that will probably kill over 50,000 people again in 2023. After all, greater awareness could end up saving lives by getting more people diagnosed earlier and raising more funding for research to find new ways to diagnose and treat pancreatic cancer. Yet, take a wild guess as to what various anti-vaccination social media accounts have been trying to do instead? Yes, you got it, blame Covid-19 … [Read more...] about Robbie Knievel Dies After Pancreatic Cancer Battle, Yet Anti-Vaxxers Blame Covid-19 Vaccines

After Battling Cancer, Publicis CEO Wants To Remove The Stigma

January 17, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Chairman And CEO Arthur Sadoun Today Launched A Cross-Industry Coalition In Davos To Help Cancer Patients And Caregivers Feel Supported At Work. In March 2022, Arthur Sadoun was diagnosed with HPV-related cancer. “As soon as I learned I had to go through surgery, radiation and chemo, I started thinking that it was important to make it public,” says Sadoun. As chairman and CEO of Publicis Groupe, the publicly-traded ad and marketing giant based in Paris, Sadoun also felt a fiduciary duty to disclose the news to his clients, investors and employees. “Especially, in this post-pandemic world, transparency is everything.” Talking about his cancer also meant exposing his family and his own vulnerabilities as a leader, which made Sadoun uncomfortable. The reaction, he says, was overwhelming — with people thanking him for talking about something that they had been scared to raise. “No one had really tried to erase … [Read more...] about After Battling Cancer, Publicis CEO Wants To Remove The Stigma

World Cancer Day: Know how a critical illness policy can ease treatment cost burden

February 4, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Amidst the focus on COVID-19 and the related costs and insurance premiums, it’s important to ensure that we are covered for other diseases too. Usually, our base health insurance policy is enough when it comes with a decent sum assured amount. But did you know how much the treatment for critical and chronic illnesses such as cancer, cardiac ailments, renal failure and liver transplant can cost you? It’s not just hospitalisation costs. For example, myocardial infraction claims could cost you anywhere between Rs 6 lakh and 7.5 lakh, while a stroke could leave a family poorer by Rs 10 lakh, as per claims data released by Bajaj Allianz General Insurance. A kidney failure could set you back by Rs 8.5-10 lakh, besides regular dialysis that could stretch for years. The post-hospitalisation care is expensive too. And if this leads to a job loss, because you might need time to recover, it results in a loss of income. In the coming weeks, India is set to get the first at-home self-test kit for women that will allow them to screen for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the leading cause of cervical cancers. The at-home vaginal swab test, being launched by LifeCell, a leading stem cell and tissues storage bank provider that is also into genetic screening tests and cell and tissue-based therapeutics, will cost Rs 2,500 per test. According to Mayur Abhaya, managing director of the company, the test comes with a self-collection kit box that is safe, discreet, easy to use, and convenient, and the sample can be collected from the comfort of one’s home. Importantly, it covers 24 high-risk HPV infections including HPV 16 & 18, which are responsible for more than 50 percent of cervical cancer cases. “This test uses real-time (polymerase chain reaction) PCR technology to accurately detect the HPV genotypes that are responsible for cervical cancer,” Abhaya said. UV Nail Polish Dryers May Cause Skin Cancer

January 24, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A new study from the University of California San Diego has found that UV-emitting nail polish dryers used to cure the chemicals used in gel manicures may cause cancer. Ultraviolet (UV) light has wavelengths between 10 nm and 400 nm. The Earth’s stratospheric ozone usually blocks wavelengths below 280 nm. The ultraviolet light that reaches the Earth’s surface is between 280 nm and 400 nm. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified broadband UVA 315–400 nm as a Group 1 carcinogen. The causal relation between skin cancer and irradiation with ultraviolet-emitting tanning devices is well documented, but the use of UVA light in nail dryers has received little attention and could pose a significant public health risk. A spectrum of ultraviolet light (340-395nm) is used to cure the chemicals used in gel manicures. T anning beds , known to cause skin cancer, use a different spectrum of UV light … [Read more...] about UV Nail Polish Dryers May Cause Skin Cancer

MIT & Mass General Hospital Have Developed An AI System That Can Detect Lung Cancer

January 16, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Lung cancer is a devastating disease. According to the World Health Organization , lung cancer is one of the most common causes of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 2.21 million cases in 2020 alone. Importantly, the disease can be progressive; that is, for many, it may start out as just mild symptoms that raise no alarm, before quickly evolving into a life-threatening diagnosis, leading to death. Fortunately, the range of therapeutics focused on helping patients with lung cancer has grown tremendously in the last two decades. However, early detection of the cancer is still one of the only means to significantly decrease mortality rates. One notable accomplishment in this arena is the recent announcement by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Mass General Hospital (MGH) regarding the development of a deep learning model named “Sybil” that can be used to predict lung cancer risk, using data from just a … [Read more...] about MIT & Mass General Hospital Have Developed An AI System That Can Detect Lung Cancer

An Ovarian Cancer Genetic Test May Aid In Treatment

January 18, 2023 by www.chiangraitimes.com

(CTN News) – As a result of the “War on Cancer,” the mortality rate for ovarian cancer has declined only slightly in the past forty years. Gynecologic cancers are the most deadly when it comes to ovarian cancer. Genetic testing has enabled precise targeting of an expensive but effective treatment for ovarian cancer. The medication has improved the prognosis of patients with ovarian cancer. In the wake of Chris Evert’s announcement that he is cancer-free after battling ovarian cancer for a year, many people have gained renewed faith in medicine and science. A genetic test created at the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital identified patients with ovarian cancer who would benefit from PARP inhibitors as a therapeutic option. The ability to target therapy to patients who will benefit from it most is crucial since adverse effects are potentially catastrophic. A genetic test identifies patients who will not benefit from a particular medication, preventing … [Read more...] about An Ovarian Cancer Genetic Test May Aid In Treatment

Uterine Cancer Now Covered By 9/11 Survivors’ Health Program After Years Of Pressure

January 18, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline After years of pressure from 9/11 survivors and first responders, uterine cancer is the latest addition to the growing list of covered health conditions under the World Trade Center’s Health Program, federal health officials decided Wednesday , allowing individuals connected to the 2001 attacks to receive free treatment for the condition. Key Facts Many individuals who were part of the rescue and recovery after 9/11 or were subject to the dust created by the attack were exposed to carcinogens that left them with illnesses, uterine cancer among them. However, officials initially believed there was a lack of sufficient evidence linking 9/11 chemical exposure to uterine cancer, a document from the federal Department of Health and Human Services announcing the change in policy revealed. The move comes after an aggressive appeal to HHS from Rep. Frank Pallone Jr (D-N.J.) earlier this month, and a … [Read more...] about Uterine Cancer Now Covered By 9/11 Survivors’ Health Program After Years Of Pressure
