INQUIRER.net FILE PHOTO TAGUM CITY — A former top executive of the National Electrification Administration (NEA) has urged member-consumers of the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (Nordeco) to continue raising their voice against the planned entry of the Aboitiz-owned Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) into its franchise area or else they would fall into the supposed ‘profit motive’ of the firm. Edgrado Masongsong, secretary general of the National Center of Electric Consumers Cooperative (NCECCO), warned Nordeco member consumers that if they allow DLPC to take over several areas of its franchise, the members would turn into “mere rental payers” of the power distribution company. Unlike private power companies, which are allowed to raise power rates in the era of deregulation, power coops still continue to consult with their members and even report to them the cooperative’s financial status every end of the year. Uber, Lyft win big as California court affirms Prop. 22
Ridesharing giants Uber and Lyft scored a critical legal victory on Monday after a California court ruled that gig companies can continue operating under an independent contractor model. The ruling from the California appeals court overturned a lower-court ruling that said the ballot measure, known as Proposition 22, was illegal. Voters had passed the law in November 2020, though it was later challenged by some gig workers and labor unions. A judge ruled it unconstitutional in August 2021, saying it limited the state’s legislative power. The move means that Uber and Lyft, as well as other companies with gig-centric business models, such as DoorDash and Instacart, can keep signing up drivers as independent contractors rather than employees. It allows the companies, which have begun focusing on reaching profitability, to avoid paying costs associated with employees, such as paid time off and health benefits. The companies backing the bill had poured more than $205 million into … [Read more...] about Uber, Lyft win big as California court affirms Prop. 22

Seedless Lemons Are The Next Big Bet From The Billionaires Behind Halos, Pom Wonderful And Fiji Water
A rare peek inside their agricultural empire shows how Stewart and Lynda Resnick are going all-in on the innovative citrus fruit. By Chloe Sorvino , Forbes Staff On a sunny 58-degree day in Delano, California, Zak Laffite walks through groves of trees where he grows a special kind of lemon, and then stops to explain how harvest works. “What we want is the tree to justify how much fruit comes off,” Laffite says. “We don’t want it all to come off at the same time. We basically say, just give me a little bit.”Laffite picks off a lemon. He quickly takes a knife from his pocket and slices open the fruit to reveal the inside: no seeds, with a thin white rim around the edge and a light yellow rind . “We’ll come in here and if the fruit’s this size, it’s ready to come off. If it’s colored up, we’ll get it as well,” Laffite says. That first pick will leave two-thirds of the lemons still on the trees. More lemons are picked off in a couple weeks. Then there’s a third round. … [Read more...] about Seedless Lemons Are The Next Big Bet From The Billionaires Behind Halos, Pom Wonderful And Fiji Water
