Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After years of intrigue and anticipation, and of course speedbumps that has been the norm for a long troubled sport in a goldmine of a location, Major League Cricket was spectacularly unveiled in Houston on Sunday. With a pool of overseas stars limited - due to international commitments and India's contracted players unable to play beyond their homegrown Indian Premier League - the MLC did well to recruit several well-known players still at their peak. Salary caps were reportedly around $1 million per team with top players set to receive similar remuneration per game to cashed-up start-up leagues in the UAE UAE and South Africa. Also drafted were a host of expat players, who are flying the flag for a pro cricket league hoped to finally fuel the rise of cricket in the world's biggest market. While born and bred players were perhaps predictably outnumbered, MLC is hoped to spark interest in the younger … [Read more...] about America’s New Major League Cricket Has A Footprint From Cashed-Up India

After higher holiday sales than expected in 2022, it would be tempting to imagine that all is well again in the retail and retail real estate industries, which were ravaged worldwide by two years of pandemic-related closures and restrictions. ‘Thai Hot Guys’ Malaysian nightclub event during Ramadan cancelled after intense backlash
A Malaysian nightclub has cancelled a ‘Thai Hot Guys’ event after receiving massive backlash from the public as the event was scheduled to occur during the Islamic holiday of Ramadan. Apparently, juicy Thai men parading around half-naked in lingerie wasn’t what those celebrating Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, had in mind. As Ramadan is a holy celebration which includes fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, Malaysian authorities issued a stern warning to the nightclub. Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail called on the event organisers to refrain from offending the religious sentiments of the country’s Muslim community. The nightclub, Privacy Tun Razak, was planning to feature cross-dressing Thai men to celebrate its opening. But, as the news went viral on social media, police say they received at least 60 reports of the event as of yesterday. Netflix’s 1 Million Users Prove Ad-Supported Tiers Are Future Of Streaming
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The streaming wars have reached another momentous milestone in their post-Covid adjustment period. The services are anxiously wondering if ad-supported tiers can spur the growth streamers have hoped to reignite. The answer appears to be a cautious yes—at least if the first ad tier subscription numbers from Netflix NFLX are any indication. According to a report, the streamer hit 1 million active users for its ad-supporter tier in its second month. It showed tremendous month-over-month growth, expanding by 500%. Equally important to Netflix, the delivery met the baseline promised to advertisers on the new service, meaning no need to serve up makegoods (free ads to balance out underdelivery of commercials). It’s a significant achievement for Netflix, which suffered its first year-to-year subscriber drop in over a decade in 2022. But perhaps more significantly, it signals a potentially seismic shift in the streaming … [Read more...] about Netflix’s 1 Million Users Prove Ad-Supported Tiers Are Future Of Streaming

More jobs needed for pandemic-hit youth, says WB
MANILA – The Philippine government urgently needs to adopt “more targeted” policies that would address employment struggles among youth, who bore the brunt of the shock that the pandemic inflicted on the domestic job market, according to the World Bank (WB). In a report launched on March 22, the multilateral lender said the employment situation in the country is recovering but still far from the vibrancy seen before the pandemic, with “elementary,” low-paying occupations replacing high-productivity jobs that were lost during the past three years of disruption. WB senior economist Yoonyoung Cho, who presented highlights of the report, said that as of the second quarter of 2022, jobs have returned, but some of the prepandemic progress was reversed. Cho said there has been a decrease in salaried jobs and an increase in unpaid work, elementary occupations and poverty. She said recovery has been uneven, such that this was robust in sectors like information and communication … [Read more...] about More jobs needed for pandemic-hit youth, says WB

Eye drop recall: Deaths and vision loss continue as more bacteria infections are discovered
U.S. officials are reporting two more deaths and additional cases of vision loss linked to eyedrops tainted with a drug-resistant bacteria. The eyedrops from EzriCare and Delsam Phama were recalled in February, and health authorities are continuing to track infections as they investigate the outbreak. In the latest government tally, 68 people were diagnosed with infections from the bacteria, which has now caused a total of three deaths and eight cases of people losing their vision, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Tuesday. That’s up from one death and five cases of permanent vision loss reported last month. The CDC said four people have undergone surgery to remove an eyeball due to the infections. The outbreak is considered particularly worrisome because the bacteria driving it is resistant to standard antibiotics. The CDC has now identified cases in 16 states, including California, New York, Illinois, Texas, and … [Read more...] about Eye drop recall: Deaths and vision loss continue as more bacteria infections are discovered
