Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Group Chief Executive at Kin + Carta Europe , delivering end-to-end digital services for the world’s leading businesses. What are CEOs for? For me, our main role is to feed, drive and energize a team. This is often best done in person and in small doses, although it can be almost as effective remotely. It’s a question of how you can be ‘with the people’ when and wherever they need you. CEOs are experienced hybrid workers. In most organizations, whether they're global or have a few offices in one country, the CEO cannot be in the same place as their entire team at the same time. In many ways, our working lives haven’t necessarily changed that much post-pandemic. At a time when teams are often split between home and office, we need to make the most of every interaction we have with our colleagues. This has meant dialing up the need to be more considerate and open to listening—whatever the conversation, … [Read more...] about How CEOs Can Bring Out Their Human Side In A Hybrid World

Over the past two days, I must have had 20 conversations with people anxious about the impacts of AI on their work and livelihoods. Of course, I might have been seeking out those conversations because, as an academic and contributor to several business publications, I am also anxious! Creators, artists, coaches, programmers, doctors, writers, experts, and thought leaders are grappling with the implications of generative AI such as ChatGPT , DALL-E , and other advanced AI products on their jobs, passions, and income. On the one hand, it may seem like a dream come true. You can benefit from AI helping you work faster. Perhaps, better. On the other hand: So does everyone else and their hamster. Especially since it seems that anyone can look like an expert and creator with the help of AI. It can, after all, write a job application good enough to be short-listed, pass portions of the U.S. medical licensing exam and the bar exam , produce code , text, and sellable art … [Read more...] about Does ChatGPT mean the end of ‘thought leaders’?

The annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) always brings technology under the sustainability spotlight. As the global climate issue becomes more pressing, a recent study by McKinsey is demanding widespread commitment to environmental protection targets to realize a 1.5°C trajectory by 2030. One focus in 2022 was semiconductors—given their environmentally taxing production and their application within devices that consume power throughout their lifetime. Of course, realizing more sustainable methods of chip manufacture and energy-aware device functionality can be a major advance in reducing overall emissions. The Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC) was formed in November last year, comprising 60 founding members who attended COP27 in Egypt to outline … [Read more...] about Semiconductor Sustainability: COP27 And The Potential Of Chips To Save Energy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin So much of work can feel transactional, cold, even mind-numbing. But it doesn’t have to be that way. As Dr. Robert Waldinger , professor of psychiatry, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development , author of The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness , and a Zen master, said in an interview, “Maybe you don’t like making the widgets, but maybe you like the person you’re next to making the widgets. And that can really make a difference.” He contends that the people who are happiest and healthiest have warm connections with others . “Many of us spend more of our waking life at work than we spend anywhere else,” Waldinger explains. “So what is really a tragedy is to treat work as though it’s just something you get through so you can live the rest of your life, because it is much of your life. That artificial division is something that’s worth really looking at and calling into … [Read more...] about Do You Want Better Performance? Help People Strengthen Their Relationships

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Founder and Managing Principal of DBP Institute . I help companies transform technology and data into a valuable business asset. Today, organizations of all types are looking at leveraging data and analytics (D&A) for improved business performance and outcomes. D&A can provide EBITDA (Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) increases of up to 25% according to a McKinsey report. Nine of the top ten innovative companies globally, as rated by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), are data firms. However, despite being data-rich and having high data analytics ambitions, the BCG report also notes many companies are poor in delivering business value from D&A projects and only a few achieve those ambitions. Statistically, only 20% of the D&A solutions deliver business outcomes and 87 percent of D&A projects never make it to production. The reasons for the poor dismal metrics on … [Read more...] about Five Key Criteria To Identify The Right Data And Analytics Project
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On the heels of the release of 2023’s Silicon Valley Bank State of the U.S. Wine Industry Report , the wine industry is worried. The key takeaway of the report: the wine industry has a young drinker problem. The report found that the wine industry continues to fail at capturing the Gen Z and Millennial market — the only area of growth for American wine was among drinkers over 60, with the biggest growth happening amongst 70 and 80-year-olds. “In my view, this is the greatest issue of concern for the wine business today—namely, the lack of engagement and participation in the wine category by younger consumers in their prime spending years,” Rob McMillan, executive vice president and founder of SVB’s wine practice and author of the report, said during a panel discussion. “Whatever we are doing to promote brands to a younger consumer, I should argue we should stop right now because it’s not helping.” “The wine … [Read more...] about Reports Say Young Drinkers Are Over Wine. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Defensive Stocks Recent News The investing landscape in 2022 was notable not only for the severity of losses but also their breadth: It was the first year, since at least the 1870s, that U.S. stocks and long-term bonds both fell by more than 10%. As a result, investors have turned to defensive stocks. Defensive stocks are companies that generally hold up well in times of economic distress. The main defensive sectors are generally considered to be utilities, healthcare and consumer staples, all of which have outperformed the market in 2022. Even in a downturn, consumers continue to spend money on these products. As of December 29, the S&P 500 index’s utility stocks as a whole fell 0.5% in 2022, while consumer staples were down 2.7% in the period. This may seem poor, but the broader market fell roughly 20% during the year. Despite the better performance, cyclical sectors such as industrials and consumer … [Read more...] about Protect Your Portfolio With Defensive Stocks Like These
