COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's president on Friday appointed tycoon Dhammika Perera as minister for investment promotion, his office said in a statement, as the crisis-hit country struggles to find foreign exchange to import food, fuel and drugs. A major Sri Lankan investor who holds stakes in dozens of companies, Perera replaced President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's brother in parliament earlier this month after he stepped down. Basil Rajapaksa, the president's younger brother, previously served as finance minister. "Dhammika Perera is a very successful businessman and he has come out with several proposals on how Sri Lanka can emerge from this crisis," Sagara Kariyawasam, General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party, told Reuters. "We will watch with optimism." Sri Lanka to limit fuel for private vehicles as fuel suppliers delay shipments
COLOMBO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will not receive shipments of petrol, diesel and crude oil, scheduled for this week and next week, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said on Saturday. The minister said that suppliers have informed state-owned fuel importer and distributor Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) that they will not make the scheduled deliveries due to banking and logistic reasons. Wijesekera said public transportation, power generation and industries would be given priority until the next shipments arrive. Therefore, limited stocks of diesel and petrol will be distributed to a few gas stations throughout next week. The minister urged the general public not to queue up for fuel. He also said that refinery operations will also be halted until the next crude shipment arrives. "We are working with all new and existing suppliers. I apologize for the delay and inconvenience," he said. … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka to limit fuel for private vehicles as fuel suppliers delay shipments
‘Allow foreign-trained caregivers’
PETALING JAYA: An elderly care service association is urging the government to allow temporary entry of foreign workers trained in nursing and caregiving to address the shortage of such staff at elderly care homes nationwide. It says currently, there was an inadequate supply of locals to undertake the job as many of the previous caregivers consisted of nurses awaiting placements. They have since been called to service by government and private hospitals to handle the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia. Similarly, many locals are not interested in these jobs as they are akin to other 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) jobs, it said. Association for Residential Aged Care Operators (Agecope) president Delren Terrence Douglas said foreign workers trained in caregiving or nursing could be temporarily allowed to address the shortage faced by the industry. “For my home in Kedah, we had eight nurses prior to the pandemic but the number has since dwindled to only two for a home with 42 … [Read more...] about ‘Allow foreign-trained caregivers’
Too Asian To Be Irish, Too Irish To Be Asian
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are lots of conversations driven on the impact of intercountry and transracial adoption and many times I see these driven by people who have little to no first-hand experience of this very complex topic. I have seen long conversations (usually lacking nuance) from both people of colour and white people sharing perspectives without actually asking adoptees their perspectives, focusing on centering their views vs those they claim to understand. There is a problem with this because we see it time and time again in diversity and inclusion work. From people making assumptions on what other groups of people need based on their own personal thoughts and experiences, to tech solutions being created without truly listening to those who it affects. Listening vs speaking over is key - it helps us challenge bias, put friction in before decision making and enable us to truly reach people of all backgrounds. As a transracial adoptee … [Read more...] about Too Asian To Be Irish, Too Irish To Be Asian

South-East Asian champions Vietnam remains in Fifa’s top 100 and the highest ranked in region
HANOI, June 25 (Bernama): The national men’s football team of Vietnam remains in FIFA's top 100, according to the Vietnam Football Federation. The Golden Dragons are in the 97th spot in the FIFA ranking with 1,219 points, reported Vietnam News Agency. A 2-0 victory over Afghanistan in a friendly match held on June 1 has helped Vietnam gain 3.46 points. However, it was not enough for the team to advance in the rankings because its closest rivals such as Palestine and Kyrgyzstan had very good performances in the 2023 Asian Cup Third Qualifier. Although Vietnam has dropped one spot compared to the previous ranking update, it is the only South-East Asian team in the world’s top 100. Notably, maintaining the position since November 2018 is considered a very impressive record for the team. Vietnam still leads South-East Asia, followed by Thailand and the Philippines. In Asia, Vietnam ranks 17th. Meanwhile, Thailand retained its ranking at the 111th position as it earned 3.01 … [Read more...] about South-East Asian champions Vietnam remains in Fifa’s top 100 and the highest ranked in region
