Michael Hodges The Detroit News Published 10:00 PM EDT May 15, 2019 Superheroes, space aliens and enthusiastic nerds of all stripes will take over Novi's Suburban Collection Showplace Friday-Sunday when the 30th-annual Motor City Comic Con blows into town. The event regularly attracts over 60,000 visitors, and is part comic-book and pop-culture extravaganza, part buying opportunity for collectors, and part chance to meet all sorts of stars from TV and the movies who drop by to sign autographs and pose for selfies - for a fee. "Comic Con kind of makes you feel like you're not alone in the world if you're a nerd," said George Bracey, 53, a math teacher at Detroit's Cody High School who will be going Sunday with some students he mentors. An Air Force veteran who served in both Desert Storm and Desert Shield, Bracey admits he doesn't entirely fit the stereotype. On the other hand, his basement filing cabinets are crammed with 6,000-7,000 … [Read more...] about Comic and pop-culture madness descends on Novi with Comic Con
Robert Allen and Brian Manzullo Detroit Free Press Published 12:53 PM EDT Mar 25, 2019 The Round of 32 is set for 2019 Michigan Brewery Madness! Much like the NCAA tournament, many of the top seeds advanced, several in convincing fashion. Founders Brewing Co., for example, earned more than 16,000 votes out of a total of 18,333! But we did have a few upsets, including: 12-seed North Peak Brewing Co. over 5-seed Cheboygan Brewing Co. 10-seed The Mitten Brewing Company over 7-seed Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. 10-seed Motor City Brewing Works over 7-seed Mountain Town Brewing Co. 9-seed Witch's Hat Brewing Co. over 8-seed Latitude 42 Brewing Company The battle between 7-seed Kuhnhenn and 10-seed The Mitten was heated until the very end. Even though The Mitten led all week, Kuhnhenn took a quick lead in the final hours, only to lose it by just 76 votes. The biggest nail-biter throughout the week, however, might've been between 8-seed Axle Brewing Co. and 9-seed … [Read more...] about 2019 Michigan Brewery Madness: Vote in the Round of 32!
Robert Allen Detroit Free Press Published 10:04 AM EDT Mar 21, 2019 Cheers to 2019 Michigan Brewery Madness! For those in the March Madness spirit but not necessarily looking for a sports bracket, we decided to give the concept a twist: We picked 64 of Michigan's best breweries, dropped them into a college basketball-style bracket and created a pretty slick system for you to vote your favorites into the next round. Bell's Brewery and Founders Brewing Co. are in there, of course. But so are much smaller, newer breweries with loyal followings such as HOMES Brewery, Hop Lot Brewing Co. and Speciation Artisan Ales. At more than 330 breweries, Michigan has the fourth-most in the country. Entries for the bracket were selected based on size, ratings, past awards and popularity. How it works: First-round voting begins now and will end at noon Monday. The second round will begin Monday afternoon with a new round of polls. After that, new … [Read more...] about March Madness bracket: What’s the best Michigan brewery?
