Considerations For New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan To Improve The Company
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Starbucks announced today the permanent appointment of Laxman Narasimhan to the role of CEO, taking over from Howard Schultz. The move was expected— Narasimhan began working at the coffee giant in October 2022—but now it's a chance for the new CEO to contemplate changes to the organization's leadership and corporate culture, including its related operations. Of course, with Schultz now out of the seat, it's Narasimhan's full-brew opportunity. We could even argue that Starbucks is at an inflection point in its long history. As the company faces the challenges of a fast-changing market landscape, let alone prolonged economic instability and recession-like signs, Narasimhan must lead with agility and vision from the start. What leadership and organizational culture changes might Narasimhan prioritize to ensure Starbucks' continued success and sustainable growth? Innovation, purpose, and employee engagement are three … [Read more...] about Considerations For New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan To Improve The Company
Ukrainian Troops Tap Their Best Firepower To Kill Russians On Bakhmut’s Vulnerable Flanks
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Fighting rages north and south of Bakhmut as Russian regiments race against time, and their dwindling combat power , in a desperate effort to surround the ruined city and cut off its Ukrainian garrison. The Ukrainians meanwhile have dug in in the most defensible quarters of Bakhmut. With supplies of heavy artillery running low, they’re picking their targets carefully—aiming to kill as many Russians as possible with as few weapons as possible. Which side makes the most efficient use of precious military resources might ultimately prevail in Bakhmut, a city with a pre-war population of 70,000 that anchors the front line in Donetsk Oblast, in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. A dramatic strike on a Russian patrol base in Yahidne, just north of Bakhmut, on or before Sunday underscores the Ukrainians’ selective violence. As a drone from the Ukrainian 93rd Mechanized Brigade watched , a powerful munition or … [Read more...] about Ukrainian Troops Tap Their Best Firepower To Kill Russians On Bakhmut’s Vulnerable Flanks
Sunday Conversation: Aly & AJ On New Music, Favorite Los Angeles Spots, Peter Gabriel and Their Creative Renaissance
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This was an exciting week for sister duo Aly & AJ, who released their superb new album, With Love From , this week. And they celebrated with a special St. Patrick's Day record release show this past Friday at Pappy and Harriets, in the Southern California desert (Pioneertown to be specific). As the sisters explained when they jumped on a recent Zoom with Sage Bava and I, playing under the stars in the desert fulfills a longtime dream for them. And like all their dreams these days, they are well positioned to appreciate success with renewed enthusiasm and excitement. Aly & AJ are a true music success story. Years after taking an extended hiatus and not being sure if they would continue to do music, they are enjoying a full renaissance, both artistically and commercially. It couldn't have happened to nicer people. Bava and I spoke with them about their favorite L.A. hangs (a lot of food locations), the music … [Read more...] about Sunday Conversation: Aly & AJ On New Music, Favorite Los Angeles Spots, Peter Gabriel and Their Creative Renaissance
The Aviation Industry Is Investing In Sustainable Fuel, But More Is Needed
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The U.S. airline industry has set an ambitious goal to be net carbon neutral by 2050. To some this may seem like a long way off, but consider this is an industry worldwide that was built on using fossil fuels. Given the long lead time and risk to develop new aircraft, 2050 seems like it’s right around the corner. The two most popular commercial planes in the world, the Boeing 737 family and the Airbus A320 family, first took to the skies 56 and 36 years ago, respectively. The newer models are of course more efficient than these first models, but the underlying engineering for both planes is decades old. Sustainable aircraft fuel, or SAF, is one encouraging development for a more sustainable airline future. SAF uses fossil fuel by-products or plant based sources to create fuel for existing aircraft engines. With enough SAF, world airlines could become almost immediately net carbon neutral because their energy needs would no … [Read more...] about The Aviation Industry Is Investing In Sustainable Fuel, But More Is Needed
Phuket Gazette Thailand News: Red shirts to march on Bangkok; Smoking ban at airports; ICT Minister defends web censorship
PHUKET MEDIA WATCH – Thailand news compiled by Gazette editors for Phuket’s international community Concern as red shirts threaten mass protest The Nation / Phuket Gazette PHUKET: Concern over the announced mass protest by red-shirt supporters – touted to attract some 100,000 supporters – has prompted Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra to instruct municipal police to tighten security at government compounds and landmarks in Bangkok. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has also voiced her concern and assigned Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung to take charge of security in the capital. However, the National Police chief and national security agencies said the imposition of the Internal Security Act (ISA) to cope with possible violence was not necessary and there was nothing to worry about. A police spokesman said the red-shirt rally conditions did not meet the criteria for the ISA to be imposed. The rally showed no sign of being a threat to national security … [Read more...] about Phuket Gazette Thailand News: Red shirts to march on Bangkok; Smoking ban at airports; ICT Minister defends web censorship

Fire Victims Wait Years For PG&E & Edison To Settle Then Face IRS Taxes
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Most legal settlements are taxable, even for a devastating fire loss. That grim fact can be an unpleasant surprise to fire victims and seems particularly unfair. There are federal tax bill pending that if passed, could make certain fire lawsuit recoveries nontaxable. The proposed federal bill was introduced in 2022 by Congressmen Doug LaMalfa (R – Calif.) and Mike Thompson (D – Calif.) and would exempt thousands of fire victims who are receiving compensation from the PG&E Fire Victims Trust from having to pay federal income tax on their settlements. However, the Congressional session ended, and a new Congress was sworn in, before it passed, making the federal bill effectively dead. A new, substantially identical, bill, H.R.176, was quickly introduced in the new Congress by Representative LaMalfa (along with other co-sponsors, including Representative Thompson) in January 2023. It too has not seen any significant … [Read more...] about Fire Victims Wait Years For PG&E & Edison To Settle Then Face IRS Taxes
Genesis Revisits Archival Performances On ‘BBC Broadcasts’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After a somewhat quiet start to the year, new archival rock and pop releases have popped up in the last months with some notable offerings from the likes of Genesis, Elton John, the Velvet Underground and more. Here’s the rundown: Genesis BBC Broadcasts (Rhino) Between 1970 and 1998, the BBC aired the music of Genesis exclusively as performance sessions and live concerts. Now those performances have been compiled for this new five-disc, 53-track box set curated by band co-founder Tony Banks, with most of this material unofficially unreleased until now. BBC Broadcasts is essentially a Genesis career summary beginning with the Peter Gabriel/progressive rock incarnation of the group that is the focus of Disc 1 (including “Watcher of the Skies,” “The Musical Box” “Stagnation”); the rest the material concentrates on the hugely classic and successful Tony Banks-Mike Rutherford-Phil Collins lineup that elevated the … [Read more...] about Genesis Revisits Archival Performances On ‘BBC Broadcasts’
