Forget Job Titles: 7 Reasons To Take A Skills-Based Approach To Hiring Talent

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Meredith Bryan Scan any resume, and take note of what pops: job titles, company names, college degrees. But in today’s competitive labor market, businesses need workers with the right skills to do the job, not workers who’ve negotiated prestige titles that can mean different things at different organizations. Out-of-date job titles and requirements only serve to limit applicant pools in a moment when hiring managers are striving to attract and retain diverse, high-quality talent. Instead, recent research shows that a candidate’s skills are 5x more predictive of their job performance than hiring for education. “The future of work is all based on skills,” says Joseph Hanna, chief product officer at Magnit, a leading integrated workforce management platform. Innovative companies like Magnit are leveraging data and new technologies to facilitate this broader shift toward skills-based hiring, which will … [Read more...] about Forget Job Titles: 7 Reasons To Take A Skills-Based Approach To Hiring Talent

Layoffs At Disney Will Start This Week, CEO Bob Iger Says

March 28, 2023 by www.chiangraitimes.com

(CTN News) Disney CEO sent a memo this week stating that layoffs will begin this week, resulting in about 7,000 job cuts before the summer season. By cutting corporate spending, free cash flow is being increased as a result of the cuts, and corporate spending is being reduced. The company announced last month that it plans to reduce its costs by $5.5 billion, including $3 billion in content expenses. The company is beginning to notify employees whose positions have been affected by the workforce reductions this week, according to a memo obtained by CNBC, about the changes. The first group of impacted employees will receive the news directly over the next four days, and they will be notified directly of the news. It is expected that several thousand more staff reductions will be announced in April, and we expect to begin notifying employees about the final round of job reductions before the summer. A layoff announcement was first made in February. ESPN, Disney’s parks … [Read more...] about Layoffs At Disney Will Start This Week, CEO Bob Iger Says

BTS’ Jimin Is Headed For A Historic Debut With Solo EP ‘Face’

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For years, it was major news every time a South Korean musical act reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200, as very few names from that part of the world had managed to succeed in such a manner. Now, it’s not odd to see a debut from a K-pop band in the highest reaches of the tally every few weeks…but the same can’t be said for soloists. Whenever a solo star from that part of the world makes it to the uppermost tier on the Billboard 200 in America, it’s very much worthy of noting. BTS member Jimin is expected to make history with the release of his debut solo project, titled Face . It looks like the EP is going to make a huge opening on the Billboard charts in a few days, possibly debuting inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200–the chart company's weekly ranking of the most-consumed EPs and albums in the U.S. HitsDailyDouble suggests that Face could open as high as No. 3. The EP will likely start off behind … [Read more...] about BTS’ Jimin Is Headed For A Historic Debut With Solo EP ‘Face’

USTA’s National Tennis Center About More Than Hosting Tennis

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The USTA's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, hosts far more than tennis. The 46-acre site—home to the U.S. Open since 1978—still embraces all things tennis, but also welcomes a growing mix of events, from the upcoming Westminster Dog Show, Big 3 basketball, Fortnite World Cup Finals and All Elite Wresting. "We could bring in really almost anything imaginable," Chris Studley, the USTA's senior director for event services at the National Tennis Center, tells me. "We love anything." With a 45-year history of hosting tennis in New York, the National Tennis Center hasn't served as a major player in outside events (except for in 2008 when they hosted the WNBA's first-ever outdoor game). That approach changed when the center added a retractable roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis stadium in the world, in 2017 and followed that up by opening the new Louis Armstrong Stadium, also with a … [Read more...] about USTA’s National Tennis Center About More Than Hosting Tennis

The Korea paradox

Kim Myung-ja The author is president of the Seoul Forum for International Affairs (SFIA) and honorary chair of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. The 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Emmanuelle Charpentier, a French microbiologist of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, Berlin, and Jennifer A. Doudna, an American biochemist at the University of California, Berkeley, for the development of a method for genome editing. Their discovery of the Crispr/Cas9 genetic scissors paved the way for revolutionary changes in the DNA of animals, plants. Since the Crispr technology had been rumored for a Nobel recognition from the mid-2010s, the names of other pioneers and scientists in the field like George Church, a geneticist of Harvard University, Feng Zhang of the Broad Institute, and Kim Jin-soo, a biologist at Seoul National University, who also explored the Crispr DNA scissor technique, were floated for nominations for the award. ‘Succession’ Season 4, Episode 1 Review: Rummage Sale

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Succession is back for its fourth and final season and that makes me both tremendously happy and a little bit sad. Happy to get one more delicious season of family drama, backstabbing and plotting that makes House Of The Dragon almost look tame by comparison; sad that it’s almost over, of course. I could handle a couple more seasons of Succession. In any case, there’s blood in the water. Logan Roy is making his last gambit and the sharks are circling. Who will end up sitting on the Iron Waystar RoyCo Throne? Who will bend the knee? Let’s talk about it. The Revenge Of The Kids When we left off at the end of Season 3, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) had just made a surprise play. After meeting with GoJo creator Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) the Roy patriarch decided that now was the time to sell rather than acquire. Matsson would take over both companies—instead of one of Roy’s idiot children—and Logan would walk away … [Read more...] about ‘Succession’ Season 4, Episode 1 Review: Rummage Sale

Ten Questions With OpenAI On Reinforcement Learning With Human Feedback

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Recently, we interviewed Long Ouyang and Ryan Lowe, research scientists at OpenAI . As the creators of InstructGPT – one of the first major applications of reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) to train large language models – the two played an important role in the evolution of RLHF models and paving the way for GPT-4. Here are some highlights from the conversation. What's the motivation behind InstructGPT? And what are the problems with GPT-3 that inspired InstructGPT? Long Ouyang: I think one of the main issues we’re trying to solve is that when GPT-3 came out there was a lot of excitement about using it to do useful cognitive work, for example, summarizing a news article. Out of the box it’s not exactly designed to do that, it’s designed to predict what someone on the internet might say in a given setting. And it turns out that you can kind of trick the model into performing useful work for you … [Read more...] about Ten Questions With OpenAI On Reinforcement Learning With Human Feedback

NCAA Coaching Carousel: Texas Hires Rodney Terry On 5-Year, $15.3M Contract

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Rodney Terry watch is officially over. The interim tag has officially been removed and Terry is now the full-time head coach at the University of Texas after agreeing to a 5-year, $15.3 million contract, according to the Austin American-Statesman. Terry, 55. will be officially introduced during a press conference at noon Eastern on Tuesday. “He has led this team on and off the court as well as anyone could have expected,” former Texas star Kevin Durant said. Texas went 22-8 under Terry, won the Big 12 Tournament and reached the Elite Eight before losing to Miami on Sunday. Terry took over on Dec. 12 after Chris Beard was suspended and eventually fired on Jan. 5. Beard was charged with felony assault against his fiancee, but the charge was later dropped. Ole Miss hired Beard as its head coach on March 13. “Rodney has done a tremendous job,” former Texas and current Tennessee coach Rick … [Read more...] about NCAA Coaching Carousel: Texas Hires Rodney Terry On 5-Year, $15.3M Contract

Five Tips For Picking Topics For Your Law Firm Blog

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Peter Boyd, a Florida attorney who founded PaperStreet . He has helped over 1,500 law firms with their websites, content and marketing. Blogging offers a low-cost way for law firms to attract new clients and stay top of mind with referral sources. But there is nothing more frustrating than setting aside time to plan blogs only to have your mind draw a blank when it comes to picking a topic. While many firms choose to use their blog as a vehicle to show off accomplishments, there are many other options for subjects that can increase your appeal to potential clients and enhance relationships with current clients. 1. Answer Some Of The Questions You Get Most Often Off the top of your head, you can probably think of a few questions that current or prospective clients ask frequently. If your firm has staff who interact with clients frequently, check with them to see what questions they find themselves … [Read more...] about Five Tips For Picking Topics For Your Law Firm Blog

In Healthcare’s Game Of Monopoly, One Player Will Control The Board

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In healthcare, as in life, people devote a lot of time and attention to the way things should be. They’d be better off focusing on what actually could be. As an example, 57% to 70% of American voters believe our nation “should” adopt a single-payer healthcare system like Medicare For All. Likewise, public health advocates insist that more of the nation’s $4 trillion healthcare budget “should” be spent on combating the social determinants of health: things like housing insecurity, low-wage jobs and other socioeconomic stresses. Neither of these ideas will happen, nor will dozens of positive healthcare solutions that “should” happen. When the things that should happen don’t, there’s always a reason. In healthcare, the biggest roadblock to change is what I call the conglomerate of monopolies , which includes hospitals , drug companies , private-equity-staked physicians and commercial health insurers . These … [Read more...] about In Healthcare’s Game Of Monopoly, One Player Will Control The Board
