Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Miami Marlins have added a batting champion to their lineup. In a Friday afternoon trade, the Marlins acquired Luis Arraez from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Pablo Lopez, a promising young starting pitcher, minor-league infielder Jose Salas, and another prospect. It was the first time a reigning batting king was traded since the same team — the Minnesota Twins — traded future Hall of Famer Rod Carew to the California Angels in 1978. The versatile Arraez, 26, hit .316 with a .375 on-base percentage and .420 slugging average. Though he scored 88 runs as a top-of-the-order performer, he did not deliver many home runs (8) or stolen bases (4). He carries a .314 career average over his four-year career. How he’ll be used by new Miami manager Skip Schumaker is uncertain. Newly-signed veteran Jean Segura played second for the the Phillies last season but could play third for Miami after Brian Anderson left for … [Read more...] about Marlins Get AL Batting King Luis Arraez From Twins For Pablo Lopez

Minnesota Twins Win The Pablo Lopez/Luis Arraez Deal
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin 2022 was one frustrating season for the Minnesota Twins. They got off to a fantastic start, and in the eminently winnable AL Central appeared to be well on their way to securing a playoff berth. In the second half, things went south as seemingly the entire team got hurt, and the Cleveland Guardians wound up winning the division going away. The Twins’ collapse was so complete that they weren’t even within hailing distance of any of the league’s multiple wild card berths. While the on-field results weren’t great, many of the club’s big-picture moves are still looking good with the benefit of hindsight. Righthanded starter Joe Ryan, acquired from the Rays in the Nelson Cruz deal, looks like a rotation anchor. Their decision to cut bait on former ace Jose Berrios at the 2021 trading deadline appears astute, as he has slid backward since joining the Blue Jays. They got a solid year out of Gio Urshela in exchange for Josh … [Read more...] about Minnesota Twins Win The Pablo Lopez/Luis Arraez Deal
Rolen, Helton, Andruw Jones Could Join Fred McGriff In Baseball Hall Of Fame’s Class Of 2023 Next Week
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin So far, Fred McGriff is the lone member of the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023. Unanimously selected by the 16-member panel of the Contemporary Players era committee, McGriff could be the only one-man class since Ozzie Smith in 2002. Or he could have company. We’ll learn more on Jan. 24, when Hall of Fame president Josh Rawitch announces the results of the “regular” election, by 10-year members of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA). With more than 700 votes freed when Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling were among those whose maximum 10-year term on the ballot expired, several former stars whose vote went up last year could scale the 75 per cent necessary for enshrinement. The leading contenders are Scott Rolen, who played third base for several National League clubs; Andruw Jones, a center-fielder who won a rare 10 Gold Gloves in a row; Todd Helton, who hit .316 during a … [Read more...] about Rolen, Helton, Andruw Jones Could Join Fred McGriff In Baseball Hall Of Fame’s Class Of 2023 Next Week
Milwaukee Brewers Again Use Buy-Low Approach In Brian Anderson Signing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On the surface it was just another relatively inconsequential mid-January free agent signing. The Milwaukee Brewers signed former Miami Marlins’ 3B Brian Anderson to a one-year, $3,5M deal that could allow him to earn another $2M in incentives. Anderson isn’t guaranteed an everyday position in the Brewer lineup, but is one of a handful of players who should find his way into their lineup at least half of the time. The Brewers are a small-to-mid-market club that has consistently found a way to compete in recent seasons. Before missing out on an NL wild card berth by a single game last season, they made the playoffs in four consecutive seasons from 2018-21, falling one win short of the World Series in 2018. Successful low-payroll teams have gotten it done in a variety of ways. The Oakland Athletics tear it down, selling off their regulars for prospects, build for a two-to-three window a few years down the road, take their … [Read more...] about Milwaukee Brewers Again Use Buy-Low Approach In Brian Anderson Signing
From Punta Del Este To The Metaverse: It’s A New Chapter On Inspiring Travel

Philippine stocks enter bull market territory
Philippine stocks entered a bull market on Friday as investors bet on fading inflationary pressures and China’s reopening, pushing up the country’s benchmark index—Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) to its highest level in nine months. The PSEi charged higher during the session, gaining 1.73 percent, or 118.01 points, to end at 6,961.54. The broader All Shares index also rose 1.38 percent, or 49.58 points, to 3,637.62. A bull market is typically called after stocks rise 20 percent from the recent low. On Friday, the PSEi was up nearly 22 percent since the Oct. 3, 2022 low of 5,699.30. “The market is pricing in a scenario where inflation may have already peaked,” Jonathan Ravelas, a veteran stock market analyst and financial strategy consultant at e-Methods for Business Management Corp., told the Inquirer in an interview on Friday. Worries over soaring consumer prices and a downgrade in corporate earnings pulled down by the PSEi by 7.8 percent in 2022. Lluís Cortés Wanted To ‘Disconnect’ After Barcelona’s Big Year, But Ukraine Has Lured Him Back To Coaching
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On Monday evening in Zürich, former FC Barcelona Femení head coach Lluís Cortés is set to be named as the Best FIFA Women's Coach for 2021 after winning an unprecedented treble of Spanish league, Cup and UEFA Champions League with the Catalan club. However, just two days after the end of that season, Cortés resigned claiming he no longer had the energy to continue. The 35-year-old made the surprise choice at the height of his powers, after reaching the pinnacle of the women's game just 30 months after taking his first position as the head coach of a team. Yet the burden of managing a club like Barcelona during a Covid-pandemic which elongated the Spanish club season to run for 353 days in the year was proving too much of a physical and emotional strain on Cortés. Speaking to me from his home in Spain, Cortés tells me "it was a wonderful season. For a Barça supporter like me, it was like a dream to win the treble. FC Barcelona Ready To Sell Eric Garcia, Listen To Offers – Reports
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin FC Barcelona are ready to sell Eric Garcia and will listen to offers for the defender in Janaury, according to a report. The Catalan returned to his boyhood club from Manchester City on a free transfer in the summer of 2021. Immediately enjoying a prominent role in the plans of Ronald Koeman, Garcia also boasted protaganism in Xavi Hernandez's first XI when the Dutchman was fired less than midway through the 2021/2022 season. In 2022/2023, however, Garcia thought he would nail down a starting role on the back line when Gerard Pique announced his retirement in November. On the contrary, Garcia has enjoyed less playing time than ever since returning from a disappointing World Cup for Spain in Qatar where Luis Enrique's men were eliminated on penalties in the last 16 by underdogs and eventual semi-finalists Morocco. Garcia has racked up a mere 29 minutes on the pitch since club football resumed in late December. … [Read more...] about FC Barcelona Ready To Sell Eric Garcia, Listen To Offers – Reports
