Donya Tesoro’s Instagram feed is perfectly curated. In one photo, she is sitting on a wooden dock, looking up at the sky, with the sea and an island as backdrop. Another snapshot shows her staring straight at you, her hair tousled and lips slightly parted. Interspersed with these are photos of her being hugged by old women or posing with children in the middle of a crowd. If you are not familiar with the 28-year-old’s pretty face, you would think that she is a model, a celebrity or a social media influencer. In a way, she could be all of that, especially to the residents of San Manuel, Tarlac. She is, after all, their mayor. Watch more in iWant or TFC.tv MILLENNIAL MAYOR In San Manuel, Tesoro holds office in the town hall complex, where most of the town’s buildings -- from the health center to the police station -- are located. Luck is when hard work meets opportunity
It takes hard work and dedication to graduate at the top of your high school class — whether you end up in the top 10 among 90 classmates or the top 35 among 350. Today we salute the hundreds of students who accomplished that rank in St. Paul and other east metro schools. This annual project invites schools to send us a list of their “Top Graduates,” however they define them. Some schools designate the traditional valedictorian and salutatorian, others define a Top 10, and some recognize a long list of students who have achieved honors status. Our 2019 compilation shows students headed to colleges from coast to coast — from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, to the University of California Berkeley. As college majors, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) is strong. Some 80 students featured will major in a bioscience field; another 80 in an engineering discipline; three dozen in computer science. Other graduates are joining the U.S. military or … [Read more...] about Top graduates 2019: When their hard work meets the future

I didn’t complete my bachelor’s degree. I am now a full-time writer and editor. Getting to where I am today took hard work and a willingness to accept jobs I was over-qualified for. I got halfway to earning my Bachelor’s degree when I realised I needed to work more than I needed to be sitting in a lecture hall. Thankfully, despite what many may tell you, leaving college after two years didn’t keep me from building an amazing career. Here’s how I did it. I took on jobs that weren’t in my industry to make ends meet I feel really fortunate to be working as a writer and editor full-time now, but I didn’t just walk into this industry. Throughout college and the years after, I worked at Whole Foods, a post-production agency, and even a non-profit to ensure I could still pay my rent and put food on the table. It may seem like the skills I learned in those places were irrelevant to my present job, but the fact that I was willing to work and had … [Read more...] about I didn’t graduate from college but I still have a career that I love. WASHINGTON – Nearly six years ago, on an unseasonably warm April night in Washington, Lauren Clark was cooling down from a jog when she spotted a man in the distance. She quickened her pace, hurried past him and, for a moment, considered crossing the street. Her fear seemed irrational – paranoid, even – until the threat became real. The man grabbed the slender 27-year-old hairstylist from behind, thrust his hand between her legs and covered her mouth. He slammed her body to the sidewalk. A pair of black spandex leggings was the only barrier between her and the hand that would not let go. Rape seemed imminent. Death, quite possible. Clark flipped from her stomach onto her back and clawed the man’s face. Her fingernails dug into his skin and tore off his eyeglasses. The man punched her in the face, grabbed her phone and sprinted away. The man was caught just minutes later by police, who linked him to an attack against another woman earlier that night. With fresh … [Read more...] about ‘The man who attacked me works in your kitchen’: Victim of serial groper took justice into her own hands
