Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Phil Lesh will team with Wilco's Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy for a one-time only "PHILCO" show, August 26, as part of Chicago's Sacred Rose Festival. For the eternally youthful 82-year-old, the gig with Cline and Tweedy carries on a more than six-decade career built on collaboration, starting for him with The Grateful Dead. As he explained when we spoke recently, the Dead was built on the musical unions he saw in two of the greatest jazz combos of all time, led by Miles Davis and John Coltrane. "The basic inspiration for The Grateful Dead was the Miles [Davis] Quartet with Coltrane or Trane's quartet from the early Sixties. So that was pretty much the inspiration for the way we approach our music," Lesh said. Collaboration, as well as creating discourse through music, why his love for playing live has never waned, politics were just a few of the topics we discussed in a fascinating conversation. The Q Acoustics Concept 30 Speakers Are Packed With Innovation And They Sound Superb
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin British speaker brand Q Acoustics has been making some ground-breaking speakers over the past decade with a perfect balance between price and performance. Last year I reviewed the company’s flagship Concept 300 bookshelf speakers and now I’m following up with a review of Concept 30, a more affordable pair of bookshelf speakers that share many of the more expensive Concept 300 features, including the innovative quadruped stands. With its design cues and acoustic technology based on the flagship Concept 300, this new pair of speakers can deliver audiophile performance at a relatively affordable price. The key feature of the Concept range is the cabinet's design, which is engineered to be as quiet as possible. Largely unaffected by internal and external resonances, these gorgeous-looking speakers produce a tightly focused soundstage that gives the impression of a live performance. The construction of these new speakers is … [Read more...] about The Q Acoustics Concept 30 Speakers Are Packed With Innovation And They Sound Superb
Sunday Conversation: Jimmy Cliff On His Stunning New Album, Bob Marley And Uplifting People
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff has been speaking to the struggles of the times for more than half a century. In songs like "Many Rivers To Cross," "The Harder They Come,""You Can Get It If You Really Want" and his cover of "I Can See Clearly Now." Cliff once again delivers his passion, wisdom, empathy and thoughtfulness on his stunning new collection, Refugees . The album, just released this past Friday (August 12), is vintage Cliff, varying from simple pop, "My Love Song," to social consciousness on the title track, which features Wyclef Jean. The album's centerpiece though, both musically and in heart, is the brilliant "Bridges," a song whose profound beauty and depth are reminiscent of "Many Rivers To Cross," which is one of the greatest songs ever. Among the artists who've covered "Many Rivers To Cross" are John Lennon, Annie Lennox, Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Costello, Joe Cocker and more. In "Bridges" he has written … [Read more...] about Sunday Conversation: Jimmy Cliff On His Stunning New Album, Bob Marley And Uplifting People
Snoop Dogg Raps About His New Gin Brand In An Exclusive Interview
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With a career spanning nearly 30 years—and over 35 million albums sold—Snoop Dogg is undoubtedly a living legend in the world of music. His emergence as a prominent figure in the beverage industry has been less obvious. But in recent years, the prolific hip-hop star has cropped up as the celebrity face of both beer and spirit brands. Last year he even launched his own label of wine . And there’s one booze in particular with which he’s most commonly associated. It all stems back to his first smash hit single: “Gin And Juice” from his 4x platinum debut album, Doggystyle. So it was hardly a surprise late last year when Snoop announced the arrival of his very own line of the liquid: Indoggo . The real question is what took him so long. Turns out, he was just waiting for the proper partnership to emerge. He found just that with Keenan Towns and Marc Weisberg, founders of Trusted Spirits. In a world suddenly spilling … [Read more...] about Snoop Dogg Raps About His New Gin Brand In An Exclusive Interview
Why Rituals Are the Secret to a Successful Distributed Workplace (and How to Create Them)
Humans are creatures of habit whether we want to admit it or not. In the ongoing shift from office-centric work culture to distributed workplaces , managers are doing their best to build virtual offices for team members, recreating the techniques they are used to through digital tools. Conference rooms are replaced by Zoom links, achievements are celebrated on a Trello card instead of the break room whiteboard, and quick notes for co-workers are shared in a Slack DM rather than whispered over a cubicle wall. In a virtual office environment where teams are scattered across cities, states, or even time zones, it can be exhausting to keep everyone aligned and feeling connected to one another. It's in these moments where rituals among entire teams … [Read more...] about Why Rituals Are the Secret to a Successful Distributed Workplace (and How to Create Them)

The blind spots that can kill your business
ILLUSTRATION BY RUTH MACAPAGAL Last week, I gave the opening keynote at the largest retail conference in the region hosted by the Philippine Retailers Association at the SMX convention center. I took great pleasure in addressing an audience of the country‘s largest retailers and some of the most famous Filipino entrepreneurs, including Mr. William Belo and Mrs. Tessie Sy-Coson. In this column, I will share some of the secrets and insights that I shared with the audience last week that are also relevant to the nonretail markets and industries. Build it, and they will come? If you want to become or stay a market leader in your industry, you have two options when it comes to innovation. First, you can adopt the Apple model: build it, and they will come. What does that mean? It means that you can build products that customers will want and need ahead of any customer trends. This means, however, that you need the right forward-looking people and need to assemble a team of mini … [Read more...] about The blind spots that can kill your business
