Paytm vs PhonePe: Merchant sound device may be at heart of feud

August 3, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma (left) and PhonePe founder Sameer Nigam A host of things can trigger bitter rivalry between top fintech companies. These include – apart from market share – the creation of slicker apps, developing better credit algorithms, hiring the best talent, or winning the most important licences. Fintech unicorns Paytm, PhonePe and BharatPe are now competing fiercely on another front: Deploying more speaker devices in stores that announce receipt of payments made through their apps. Picture this. A shopkeeper is catering to several customers. Some pay cash and others use payment apps to scan the now ubiquitous quick response (QR) code pasted on the front desk. The busy merchant barely manages a glance at the message on their mobile phone screens confirming payment and they leave. Later, the merchant discovers the payment did not reach his account. And he realises that he was duped – the mobile screen message confirming completion of the payment … [Read more...] about Paytm vs PhonePe: Merchant sound device may be at heart of feud

Most Bought smallcases for July 2022

August 2, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

The first week of July saw the Indian share markets ending on a strong note. This was due to crude prices softening which in turn helped ease the worries of inflation. Crude oil prices fell and saw a slippage of under US$ 100 per barrel as the fear of a potential global economic recession loomed, stirring concerns for oil demand. The banking stocks were another reason for the Benchmark indices ending on a positive note. The second week of July saw the Indian share markets lose their gains due to fears that the US Federal Reserve would step forward with more aggressive rate hikes due to the soaring inflation. Prospects of more rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of India were also projected due to strong domestic inflation. The third week of July saw Indian share markets ending positively. Although the week ended positively, some volatility was seen in the markets due to weak global cues. Furthermore, investor sentiments were lifted as FIIs seemed to return to the Indian markets. This was … [Read more...] about Most Bought smallcases for July 2022

To sustain its operations, Air Selangor insists periodical tariff reviews needed

August 15, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 8, 2022 - August 14, 2022. - A + A THE recent increase in water tariffs for non-domestic users this year will only partially defray burgeoning operational costs and capital expenditures (capex), says Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), which insists a further tariff review is essential to its long-term sustainability. The sole water operator for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya says it is crucial for water tariffs to be periodically reviewed by Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) and set at a level that can sustain its operations over the long term. “As a water operator, Air Selangor needs stable and consistent capex investments to develop new water treatment plants to meet increasing demand, lay new pipes and replace old and ageing pipes. “Air Selangor’s financial sustainability remains highly dependent on water tariffs. The current tariffs are insufficient for us … [Read more...] about To sustain its operations, Air Selangor insists periodical tariff reviews needed

Synthetic Marijuana On The Rise, Sending Kids To ER

March 22, 2012 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The use of synthetic marijuana is on the rise for kids in the US. The “benefits” of the synthetic form are that less drug can produce a stronger high, and it doesn’t show up in most routine lab tests, which makes it doubly attractive to kids. But with increased potency comes increased risk of serious effects. And they may be long-term, based on what we know about the developing brain. Hospitals are seeing more and more cases of synthetic pot intoxication, and poison control centers are receiving escalating numbers of calls about the drug. Synthetic pot also goes by “K2,” “Spice,” “Aroma,” “Mr. Smiley,” “Zohai,” “Eclipse,” “Black Mamba,” “Red X Dawn,” “Blaze,” and “Dream.” Until fairly recently it was still available at convenience stores and gas stations, and only became a controlled substance in February of this year.  Three emergency room doctors at a Washington , DC hospital discuss the cases of three … [Read more...] about Synthetic Marijuana On The Rise, Sending Kids To ER

House passes Democrats’ health care and climate bill, clearing measure for Biden’s signature

August 12, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) The House of Representatives voted Friday to pass Democrats' $750 billion health care, energy and climate bill, in a significant victory for President Joe Biden and his party. The final vote was 220-207, along party lines. Four Republicans did not vote. Now that the Democratic-controlled House has approved the bill, it will next go to Biden to be signed into law. Final passage of the bill marks a milestone for Democrats and gives the party a chance to achieve long-sought policy objectives ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. It comes at a critical time as Democrats are fighting to retain control of narrow majorities in Congress. The sweeping bill -- named the Inflation Reduction Act -- would represent the largest climate investment in US history and make major changes to health policy by giving Medicare the power for the first time to negotiate the prices of certain prescription drugs and extending expiring health care subsidies for … [Read more...] about House passes Democrats’ health care and climate bill, clearing measure for Biden’s signature

Adult-Use Cannabis Legalization Reduces Use Of Synthetic Cannabinoids, New Study Finds

August 15, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Harmful exposure to synthetic cannabinoids occurs less in those U.S. states where adult-use cannabis is legal, according to a new study that shows some potential public health benefits to legalizing adult-use cannabis. Researchers who published a study in the Journal of Clinical Toxicology last week found that adult-use cannabis legalization has benefits in reducing both motivations and harms associated with the use of synthetic cannabinoid products. They estimated that synthetic cannabinoids are used by 0.2–4% of the U.S. population, predominantly by young people. In order to analyze the impact of the use of synthetic cannabinoids on the U.S. population , researchers have associated 7,600 reports of exposure to synthetic cannabinoid poisoning taken from the National Poison Data System (NPDS) data from 2016 to 2019 with cannabis state cannabis laws. The findings show that exposure to synthetic cannabinoids … [Read more...] about Adult-Use Cannabis Legalization Reduces Use Of Synthetic Cannabinoids, New Study Finds

World embraces dirtier fuels as gas hits exorbitant heights

August 15, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A SINGAPORE (Aug 15): With high natural gas prices showing no signs of abating and supplies becoming harder to obtain, cheaper and dirtier alternatives to the fuel are looking increasingly tempting for energy-hungry buyers. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices in Asia are now near US$50 (RM222.94) per million British thermal units. On an energy-equivalent basis, gas was at about double the price of diesel as of Friday, with high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) and coal cheaper still, according to data from S&P Global Commodity Insights. In Europe, the situation is similar, with natural gas at around US$60, at least triple the price of HSFO and propane, according to energy consultancy FGE. Natural gas has become the hottest commodity as Russia, a crucial source of piped gas to Europe and LNG to Asia, maintains a stranglehold on supplies amid a global energy crunch. There is not enough to go around, and the situation is expected to worsen with the approach of … [Read more...] about World embraces dirtier fuels as gas hits exorbitant heights
