President Barack Obama today acknowledged his faltering political influence on voters, and on the Republican and Democratic legislators who are charting their own course towards the 2012 election. “All I can do is make the best arguments and mobilize public opinion,” he said during a 73-minute morning press conference in the White House. “So far, [Republicans] have not been responsive to public opinion.” Pressed by reporters for answers on ongoing crises and scandals, Obama also said that Attorney General Holder did not know the disastrous details of his “Fast and Furious” program; that the feds must invest in green technology because traditional oil is running out; that China manipulates its currency; and that Pakistan cooperates with extremists. The reporters’ tough questions and the president’s cautious answers highlighted the mounting economic problems, political obstacles and internal scandals plaguing the administration. How Disney Sailed Off With $1.6 Billion From Its Cruise Line
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Disney banked a total of $1.6 billion of dividends from its cruise line over its first 25 years in business according to detailed analysis of its financial statements. The strength of Disney's brand makes it a bellwether of the cruise industry but it wasn't even a player just 25 years ago. The Mouse first dipped its toe in the water in the mid-1980s when it signed a partnership which allowed Premier Cruise Lines to sell combined cruise, hotel and theme park packages and offer on-board appearances from Disney characters. In 1993 Premier decided to partner with Warner Bros. instead and although it continued to offer land and sea packages with Disney's parks, it also added Universal Studios as an option. The led Disney to approach Carnival and Royal Caribbean about becoming its exclusive sea partner but the talks sunk without a trace. In 1998 Disney decided to take the plunge and launched its own ship, the Disney Magic. The … [Read more...] about How Disney Sailed Off With $1.6 Billion From Its Cruise Line
Elon Musk wasn’t invited to World Economic Forum meeting at Davos, say organisers
The World Economic Forum says billionaire Elon Musk wasn't on the guest list for the annual meeting of business executives, global leaders and cultural trend-setters in Davos, Switzerland despite what the Twitter owner claims. Notables from European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen to actor Idris Elba are gathering in the ritzy Alpine town this week to talk about global issues ranging from war to climate change and technology's effects on security. Elon Musk wasn't there, though he says he was invited. Forum spokesman Yann Zopf knocked that down Tuesday, saying the last time the Tesla CEO got an invitation was “not this year and not recently - last time in 2015.” Musk said in a tweet Dec. 22: “My reason for declining the Davos invitation was not because I thought they were engaged in diabolical scheming, but because it sounded boring af lol.” He didn’t specify when he got the invitation, but the tweet's timing suggested it was for this year. Musk did not immediately … [Read more...] about Elon Musk wasn’t invited to World Economic Forum meeting at Davos, say organisers

World’s oldest person dies at 118 in France
In 2021, Lucile Randon survived catching COVID-19, which infected 81 residents of her nursing home. The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, has died aged 118, a spokesman told AFP on Tuesday. Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away. She died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, spokesman David Tavella said. "There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home, told AFP. The sister was long feted as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 last year left her the longest-lived person on Earth. Curtain raiser | Sundance 2023: Screen time for India’s fears and frustrations
Indians showcase at Sundance Film Festival 2023. (Photos courtesy of Sundance Institute) If India's forthcoming run at Sundance 2023 had a theme, it would probably be the wilderness. Elephants, fish, white ants, and nocturnal beasts mark the stories featuring the country that will make their debut at the Utah-based film festival. Sundance platforms independent dramatic features and documentaries and brings some of the first international film showings of the calendar year. Titles that premiere there contend with the most troubling questions of the present moment. Indian filmmakers have regularly taken their work to the festival, particularly after the Sundance Institute began organising screenwriters and directors’ labs in the region. Such interactions have helped produce films including Margarita with a Straw (2014), Lunchbox (2015), and Fire in the Mountains (2021). Of documentary, episodes, and shorts Sundance Film Festival is biggest film festival to start … [Read more...] about Curtain raiser | Sundance 2023: Screen time for India’s fears and frustrations
Catch me if you can: ‘The Fabelmans’, a Steven Spielberg origin story
Steven Spielberg 'The Fablemans' (2022). I went to a first-day, first-show of The Fabelmans at 2pm on a Thursday. It was a small screen with a capacity of approximately 100, and it was about 80 per cent occupied. The audience was made up of all ages — starting from a group in their late teens to an elderly couple who must have been in their 80s, slowly walking up the aisle on their canes. This was in Portugal, a real testament to Steven Spielberg’s universal brand of storytelling. As the lights dimmed and the trailers played for Babylon (Damien Chazelle’s gonzo look at the early days of Hollywood), and the new Indy installment (the first time an Indiana Jones movie has been directed by someone other than Spielberg), it was hard not to think of Spielberg’s impact on modern cinema. Is there anyone who started making movies in the last 40-plus years that hasn’t been influenced by Spielberg? The Fabelmans is a Steven Spielberg origin story, but instead of Peter Parker’s … [Read more...] about Catch me if you can: ‘The Fabelmans’, a Steven Spielberg origin story
