Since the start of the pandemic, the popular medical device has been indispensable for measuring oxygen in the blood, but dangerously inaccurate in patients with darker skin. Now the FDA is in the hot seat and Black researchers are working on a cure. A t the University of Maryland Medical System, which has 11 hospitals in and around Baltimore, about half the patients are Black. So as discussion about how medical devices called pulse oximeters—the plastic hinges that clamp onto your finger to measure the oxygen content of your blood—don’t work as well for Black people and other people of color came to the forefront last year, the hospital system decided to assess the scope of the problem. The results were mindblowing: In the 12 months that ended in July, the hospitals estimated that they’d sent home 1,012 African Americans from emergency rooms who had potentially life-threateningly low oxygen levels in their blood despite normal readings from pulse oximeters. Dr. Roderick … [Read more...] about A Quick Remedy Proves Elusive For Life-Saving Pulse Oximeter’s Problems With Darker Skin

After emotional victory, Gary Kubiak tells players he is stepping down as head coach
Gary Kubiak was at the top of the list. It was his name that came to mind first and it was John Elway’s hope that his former teammate and coordinator would accept his offer. It was early January 2015 and the Broncos had just fallen to the Colts in an early and disappointing playoff exit. They immediately parted with coach John Fox and began a quick search for his replacement. Kubiak, then the offensive coordinator at Baltimore, was available — but only to the Broncos, a franchise he called “home” after spending nine years in Denver (1983-91) as a backup quarterback and 11 more (1995-2005) as a coordinator. “The only way I was worried was if he had some health issues,” Elway told The Denver Post. “… My only concern was that — the health factor.” The health factor wasn’t a concern for Kubiak then, but it certainly become one again this season, noticeable by his coaches and players after he suffered a second scare on the job at mid-season. On Sunday, Kubiak, 55, stood on the … [Read more...] about After emotional victory, Gary Kubiak tells players he is stepping down as head coach
Leadership In The Trenches. After All The Off-Sites, Platitudes, Lunches & Tweets, What Do You Have?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Let’s once again look at “leaders” and “leadership.” Let’s laugh and cry together. Let’s look at failed leaders and how they’re so incompetent, rich and delusional. I’ve seen so many of them in my career. So have you. Many of these horrible leaders are incredibly well-paid to just leave. But there’s purpose here. Bad-leader-identification-skills are necessary if you’re going to plan work-arounds for survival. So here are some clues for spotting the bad ones (as if you needed more help). Leading with Titles I’ve discussed this before , but there’s still so much to say. How many “leaders” have you seen that exhibit no leadership qualities except their titles? Put another way, if they didn’t have their titles would they still be leaders? Without their titles, would they even be taken seriously? You know exactly what I’m talking about. Please don’t ask me to name names; I won’t ask you either. I’ve traveled … [Read more...] about Leadership In The Trenches. After All The Off-Sites, Platitudes, Lunches & Tweets, What Do You Have?
How Disney Sailed Off With $1.6 Billion From Its Cruise Line
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Disney banked a total of $1.6 billion of dividends from its cruise line over its first 25 years in business according to detailed analysis of its financial statements. The strength of Disney's brand makes it a bellwether of the cruise industry but it wasn't even a player just 25 years ago. The Mouse first dipped its toe in the water in the mid-1980s when it signed a partnership which allowed Premier Cruise Lines to sell combined cruise, hotel and theme park packages and offer on-board appearances from Disney characters. In 1993 Premier decided to partner with Warner Bros. instead and although it continued to offer land and sea packages with Disney's parks, it also added Universal Studios as an option. The led Disney to approach Carnival and Royal Caribbean about becoming its exclusive sea partner but the talks sunk without a trace. In 1998 Disney decided to take the plunge and launched its own ship, the Disney Magic. The … [Read more...] about How Disney Sailed Off With $1.6 Billion From Its Cruise Line
Curtain raiser | Sundance 2023: Screen time for India’s fears and frustrations
Indians showcase at Sundance Film Festival 2023. (Photos courtesy of Sundance Institute) If India's forthcoming run at Sundance 2023 had a theme, it would probably be the wilderness. Elephants, fish, white ants, and nocturnal beasts mark the stories featuring the country that will make their debut at the Utah-based film festival. Sundance platforms independent dramatic features and documentaries and brings some of the first international film showings of the calendar year. Titles that premiere there contend with the most troubling questions of the present moment. Indian filmmakers have regularly taken their work to the festival, particularly after the Sundance Institute began organising screenwriters and directors’ labs in the region. Such interactions have helped produce films including Margarita with a Straw (2014), Lunchbox (2015), and Fire in the Mountains (2021). Of documentary, episodes, and shorts Sundance Film Festival is biggest film festival to start … [Read more...] about Curtain raiser | Sundance 2023: Screen time for India’s fears and frustrations
8 Black-Owned Wines To Try This Black History Month—And Beyond
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At Michelin-starred Esmé in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, the 50-strong wine list is as considered as the restaurant’s vibrant food menu—boasting predominantly women and BIPOC producers, in addition to wineries with a philanthropic bent. And it’s mighty refreshing to see: Not nearly enough restaurants put this much thought and intention into their wine lists, mostly preferring to impress diners with volume (picture: leatherbound, bible-thick tomes) or shock (think: near-offensive markups that hover way above the 200–300% industry standard ). But Tia Barrett, Esmé’s exacting beverage director, is having none of that. Her abbreviated wine list conveys a deep sense of adventure, where profitability isn’t always top of mind. Even her own personal consumption isn’t governed by the trends of the day. “ Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Gnarly Wine Zinfande l is my all-time favorite. Brenae Royal is an inspiration as a … [Read more...] about 8 Black-Owned Wines To Try This Black History Month—And Beyond
Asian Review: More $000s Than Heroes Of Late
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At this fall’s Forbes Global CEO Conference in Bangkok, I asked a panel of wisemen: Where is the transformative national leader of our day, akin to Lee Kuan Yew in 1960s Singapore or (forgetting Tiananmen) Deng Xiaoping in China? Worldwide, I suggested Abiy Ahmed, the peace-and-prosperity young reformer who is prime minister of Ethiopia. Were he to succeed in a country more populous than the Philippines, Africa’s chronically-beset Sahel region would be transformed. The panelists didn’t offer much. Sinophile Allan Zeman suggested Xi Jinping. Sorry, Allan, but I meant positive transformations. The implication of this exercise for Asia-Pacific in particular is that in an era when vast new possibilities loom, when widespread affluence has replaced common poverty in much of the region, public governance isn’t up to the raised expectations. The most crying shame is Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar, a tragedy of missed opportunity. But … [Read more...] about Asian Review: More $000s Than Heroes Of Late
Why Inclusion Is The Key To Diversity At Work
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Recent reports into the U.K.’s Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade have revealed widespread racism and misogyny that would be appalling on their own. But, coming after the Black Lives Matter protests and in the wake of the #MeToo movement, they are even more shocking and disappointing. After all, organizations of all sorts have responded to these initiatives with a variety of programs designed to promote diversity and inclusion. Unfortunately, these schemes often appear to be part of the problem rather than the solution. Octavius Black, co-founder and CEO of Mind Gym , a consultancy that uses behavioral science to help organizations with learning and development, says that the record of diversity/inclusion courses such as unconscious bias training is “at best moot.” He adds that he and his colleagues prefer to encourage organizations to display empathy and to think in terms of “headwinds and tailwinds.” The idea … [Read more...] about Why Inclusion Is The Key To Diversity At Work
Gary Kubiak taken to the hospital after Broncos’ loss to Atlanta in Denver
Broncos coach Gary Kubiak was taken to a Denver-area hospital by ambulance Sunday evening after his team’s 23-16 loss to Atlanta . A team spokesman said Kubiak was suffering flu symptoms. After players cleared out of the Broncos locker room at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, about 10 minutes after Kubiak spoke to gathered media behind a podium, the coach was put into a waiting ambulance on a stretcher and taken away. Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said Kubiak, 55, “was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He’s currently being evaluated.” After players left the Denver locker room, the Broncos’ head of security suddenly cleared the area, including the field-level concourse, while an ambulance backed into the stadium to escort Kubiak out. In 2013, when Kubiak was then head coach of the Houston Texans, he collapsed on the field during halftime of a game and was taken to a hospital after suffering a mini-stroke. His assistants, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and … [Read more...] about Gary Kubiak taken to the hospital after Broncos’ loss to Atlanta in Denver
